Black Gold: Oil in the Neighborhood

The Historical Society of Long Beachs outstanding historical collections

will be used to mount a fascinating exhibition about the history of oil in the
Long Beach area including Signal Hill. The history of Long Beach has been
significantly changed twice by the discovery of oil near its boundaries.
This exhibition will explore how the discovery of oil on Signal Hill in
1921 intensified the impact of the national economic boom of the 1920s. The
industry created jobs that drew new residents and investment capital for a
million dollar a month building boom; that boom resulted in skyscrapers
downtown and new suburbs. A new industrial district developed near Signal
Hill where entrepreneurs developed and sold oil field equipment. Later,
another oil reservoir was discovered in the harbor district.
Utilization of petroleum reserves profoundly shaped the local landscape
and built environment. We plan to demonstrate these transformations through
an exhibition, using:
