themostpopularandenduringsongsfromthe1920stothe1950sthatwerecreatedforBroadwaytheatre,musicaltheatre,
andHollywoodmusicalfilm.Theyhavebeenrecordedandperformedbyalargenumberandwiderangeofsingers,
instrumentalbands,andjazzmusicians.TheSongbookcomprisesstandardsbyGeorgeGershwin,ColePorter,andIrving
Berlin,andalsoJeromeKern,HaroldArlen,JohnnyMercer,RichardRodgers,andothers.[1][2][3][4][5]

Structure
ManyofthesongsintheGreatAmericanSongbookareinthirtytwobarform.Manywerecomposedformusicals,and
someoriginallyincludedanintroductorysectionalverse.Thesectionalverseisamusicalintroductionthattypicallyhasa
freemusicalstructure,speechlikerhythms,andrubatodelivery.Thesectionalverseservedasawayofleadingfromthe

onCDin1988withatotalof18standardssungbyNilsson.Alsoin1973,BryanFerry,ofRoxyMusicfame,released
TheseFoolishThings,andhehassubsequentlyrecordedseveralsuchalbums.In1978,countrysingerWillieNelson
releasedacollectionofpopularstandardstitledStardust.Thiswasconsideredriskyatthetimebutthealbumhasbecome
thebestsellingandperhapsthemostenduringofNelson'scareer.
In1983,popularrockvocalistLindaRonstadtreleasedWhat'sNew,herfirstinatrilogyofstandardsalbumsrecorded
