1.1 General information concerning

pressurised installations
Before any pressure boundary is opened, assure yourself personally:
That the steam generator is shut down, the fluid system is completely
depressurized and drained or that a satisfactory shut-off system approved by domestic pressure vessel authorities - is installed and
closed; provisions are taken against inflow of fluid (including cold
fluid) and that the valve metal has cooled down to a temperature
below 60C/140F.
Any drain valve or vent valve in the adjacent piping must be open and
not discharging.
That the actuator is out of operation, all controls discharged and that
the system is depressurized/unloaded.
That the hydraulic pumps are out of operation and storage tanks and
distribution system are depressurized.

!!!
This valve normally operates under high pressure
with a hot medium.

Failing to observe these precautions means a very high risk of

serious burn injuries caused by hot steam or evaporating hot
water.

The actuator may contain

a large amount of stored
energy.

1.2 Intended use and design limitations

Design limitations, e.g. maximum permitted pressure and temperature, are stated on the name plate and in the technical documentation.
The technical documentation also states the medium on which the
valve is intended to be used.
Any other use than that defined in the technical documentation is not
permitted.
When dimensionening, the following factors are taken into consideration:
Creeping: Unless otherwise stated in other norms, standards or
directives a theoretical number of operating hours within the temperature range, where the creeping phonomenon may occur, is 100 000 h
at indicated operating temperature for dimensioning.
Fatigue: Norms for dimensioning to eliminate the risk of fatigue are
3000 start/stop cycles and 17000 thermic cycles.
Corrosion: Material thickness increased with 1 mm.

1.3 Installation and starting

Remove all external and internal packages together with any temporary protective material.
Carefully inspect the valve to ensure that no damage has occurred in
transit or during subsequent handling.
Make sure that the identification markings showing material and pressure/temperature rating correspond to the actual service conditions.
Read and follow the installation instructions carefully.
Make sure the valve is installed so that it can be safely operated and
maintained. There must be a firm foundation for the operator with
adequate space around the valve to meet operating and maintenance
requirements. Where fitted, indicators should be clearly visible from
the normal operating position.
Ensure that pipe work and connections are correct and properly supported to prevent the valve from being subject to unncessary strain.
Make sure the valves are installed in accordance with the flow direction.
Carefully inspect valve and actuator to ensure that no damage has
occurred during installation.
Make sure that condensed water, if any, is drained out of the pipline
before starting the steam valves.
Welding
When welding valves into pipework, always follow the national requirements valid in the country where the plant is situated. The welding contractor must have a valid welding process qualification and also hold the
necessary proof of competence for the persons who will perform the
welding.

1.4 Operation
Take immediate actions in case valve or actuator does not function
satisfactorily.

1.5 Maintenance
DO
Read the maintenance instructions.
Ensure that the working area or platform around the equipment is stable, clear of obstructions and fulfils the requirements for a safe workplace.
Check equipment exterior, including painted surfaces and insulation,
for any signs of damage. Special inspection measures may be necessary. If you are not sure - check with the person responsible for the installation.
NOTE

Equipment containing parts with stored energy - e.g. springs, weights

and pressure accumulators - must be handled with extra care.
Ensure that the piping on both sides of the equipment has complete
and independent support if it is necessary to take it out from the pipework. If removing the equipment, it may be necessary to furnish the
open pipe ends with some suitable protection. Check it this is necessary.
Ensure that the equipment is securely and correctly suspended during
handling.
Check all parts for signs of wear, erosion, corrosion and cracks when
the equipment is dismantled. Replace damaged parts.
Use spare parts only that comply with manufacturers recommendations and ensure that they are installed in accordance with the manufacturers instructions.
Inspect the equipment under pressure, either before or during re-installation if maintenance actions have included dismantling of parts
exposed to pressure.
Check and tighten gland packings at regular intervals to prevent leakage.
DO NOT
Do not secure glands too firmly - valve operation may be affected.
Do not secure glands unevenly - the valve spindle may seize.

SR 500.30/1en

Do not repack valve glands under pressure unless the operating/maintenance instructions specially cover this feature.
Put safety first!

1.6 Periodical checks

In order to secure a long service life of this valve arrangement, it is absolutely necessary that all control units are in perfect condition and function properly. Unstable spray control and/or hunting pressure control
may cause thermal fatigue damage to the valve and its interior parts.
It is very important that the valve stem can move freely all the time. If the
valve is not used continuously - check once a week or at least once every
month that the valve stem is movable.

!!!
The valve body - upstream - must be kept drained and preheated all
the time above saturation temperature. Water in the system or the
valve may lead to severe water hammer with subsequent danger of
damage to persons and material.

Check pressure control system frequently.

Check temperature control system frequently.
Check function of preheating/draining periodically.
Keep area around the valve clean and free of obstacles.
