A healthy
sex life is
possible no
matter what
your
age!
..........................................................
By Randi Mann, NP

ekindle your desire, your passion and your sex life by

keeping your hormones balanced and if needed, try a
little testosterone! Nearly all women experience a loss of
sexual desire at some point in their lives. For many women this
happens in their late 40s and 50s. When looking for love we want
all of our hormones at optimal levels. A change in a womans
vaginal moisture and elasticity, lowered self-esteem due to weight
gain and a lack of emotional intimacy with their partner can
contribute to low libido (sex drive). A womans body shape may be
changing in her 40s and 50s as her hormones change, resulting in
more belly fat and loss of muscle mass depending on her diet and
exercise. At midlife she may temporarily feel less attractive and
undesirable and therefore less interested in sex. A caring partner
can make a world of difference and can help a woman to accept
these as normal changes that all women go through. After all, each
day a woman gets older her partner is also getting older too!
If a woman is feeling unhappy, unlovable, angry or unfulfilled,
it is difficult for her to feel loving and connected with her partner.
Counseling may be helpful for couples who are having sexual
problems as this may represent deeper issues in their relationship.
Satisfying sex involves sharing love, warmth and connection. This
is difficult to do if you are not feeling connected to yourself and
filled with love. You cannot share something that you dont feel.
A common cause of low sex drive for women can be related
to her hormone levels: falling progesterone, fluctuating estrogen
and low testosterone. Changes in estrogen level can influence
the vaginal lining causing dryness, loss of elasticity and thinning
of the tissues. This can lead to painful intercourse, especially if
10

Natures Pathways | February 2016

attempted without the use of additional sensual lubricant. A small

amount of topical estrogen used vaginally two to three times per
week can easily remedy this complaint if additional lubricant
is not enough. Being overtired, too stressed or not feeling well
certainly can make an enormous difference in a womans desire
to be sexual. As a woman ages, her ovaries begin to produce less
testosterone. This hormone of desire for women influences her
thoughts and fantasies about sex as well as her sensations of pleasure and orgasmic response.
If a woman is very stressed, no matter what her age, she likely
will not feel the urge to have sex. Perhaps this is Mother Natures
way of helping to avoid a pregnancy at a perceived bad time
to bring a child into the world. For many women (but not all)
testosterone therapy does appear to increase sex drive along with
energy, muscle tone and size, and bone strength. Recent research
has also shown taking the hormone called oxytocin 30 minutes
prior to sex can increase a womans desire to be held, to cuddle
and feel less distracted, in turn helping her to feel more connected
to her partner. One of my patients reports it helps her to feel more
playful and stops her from thinking of her to-do list in her head
long enough to relax and enjoy being sexual.
According to the North American Menopause Society there
are no FDA-approved testosterone products currently available
for women in the United States and Canada. In Europe, a testosterone patch has been approved for treating low sexual desire
associated with distress in surgically menopausal women who are
also on estrogen therapy. Interestingly, there are several different FDA-approved testosterone medications for men available by

prescription in traditional pharmacies manufactured in standard
doses from pharmaceutical companies.
Fortunately testosterone is available for women in America
through compounding pharmacies (these are pharmacies where
customized medications are prepared to meet each patients
specific needs). These specialized pharmacies can create customized testosterone doses for women as ordered by their medical
provider. It is best to seek help from an expert who is skilled at
prescribing bioidentical (some call these natural) hormones such
as estrogen, progesterone and testosterone.
I prefer to prescribe only bioidentical hormones for my
patients, guided by symptoms and hormone testing before and

during treatment. This helps me to know a womans baseline level

of hormones prior to starting and how well she is absorbing and
responding to her hormone therapy after start of treatment. It
helps to ensure that she is getting the proper amount of hormone
supplementation, not too much medication or too little. It is
helpful to use a symptoms chart to track your symptoms to see if
they are related to your menstrual cycle and bring this in to your
medical visit to discuss with your provider.
Low libido and fatigue may improve with a small dose of testosterone (along with estrogen and progesterone when needed) and a
personalized program for better self care and attention. Many women
feel better in general and sexually when they learn to eat a better diet,
exercise 3-4 times per week and manage their stress better. Dont
settle for not feeling your best enjoy your sexuality no matter what
your age! Dont let something as simple as a hormone imbalance rob
you and your partner of a satisfying sex life!
Randi Mann, WHNP-BC, NCMP, is the owner of Wise Woman
Wellness LLC, an innovative wellness and menopause center at
1480 Swan Road, De Pere. Mann is a board certified Womens
Health Nurse Practitioner and certified NAMS Menopause Practitioner, one of a handful in Wisconsin and less than 700 worldwide
to achieve this distinction. She combines the best of conventional, functional and
integrative medicine to help women with female, thyroid and adrenal hormone
issues to live healthier, more abundant, joy filled lives using a blend of compassion, cutting edge science, practical guidance and humor. Please contact her at

How to
shorten the
duration of
a
cold
.........................................................

ew things can be as uncomfortable as the common cold. In

their book Common Cold, authors Olaf Weber and Ronald
Eccles say the common cold has been around since the
ancient times. More than 200 virus strains can contribute to colds,
but the rhinovirus is the most common. Colds produce a bevy of
symptoms, including runny nose, congestion and sore throat, so it
should come as no surprise that sufferers want to find relief fast.
Colds typically last for a week or more. While theres no cure for
the common cold, according to The Mayo Clinic, there are some
remedies that can help cold sufferers feel better more quickly.

activities, and spend more time relaxing or sleeping to let your

body do its job.
HYDRATION: Consuming plenty of clear fluids can reduce

congestion and ensure that you do not get dehydrated. Plus, warm
beverages can be soothing to an irritated throat. Avoid coffee,
caffeinated sodas and alcohol, which can exacerbate dehydration.

SALINE RINSES: Intra-nasal saline sprays, neti pots and similar

adequate rest. Your bodys immune system is working overtime

to combat the cold virus, and restricting activity can help it direct
efforts where theyre needed most. Keep away from strenuous

products can help loosen mucus that is clogging the nose and
sinus cavities, allowing it to flow out. This makes blowing your
nose more effective and may help prevent post-nasal drip. Avoid
prolonged use of medicated decongestant sprays. They may work
well, but they can cause rebound congestion thats worse than the
original stuffiness.

VITAMIN C: Vitamin C will not prevent colds, but it could help

in other ways. Taking vitamin C before the onset of cold symptoms may shorten the duration of symptoms. Vitamin C also may
provide benefits for people at high risk of colds due to frequent
exposure, offers The Mayo Clinic.
SOUP AND TEA: Soup is an easy-to-digest meal that provides

many of the necessary remedies for a cold, including warm broth

to hydrate and soothe, antioxidant-rich vegetables and protein
to help fuel the bodys recovery process. In 2000, Dr. Stephen
Rennard of the Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha actually
tested if chicken soup clinically makes people with colds feel
better. He found that chicken soup inhibited neutrophils, immune
cells that cause congestion. Decaffeinated tea also may help you
stay hydrated and relieve many cold symptoms.
REINFECTION: Use cleaning products that are effective at

killing viruses around the house to prevent reinfection and cold

relapses. Also, avoid touching your nose, eyes and mouth between
hand-washings to keep germs at bay.

Colds can be a nuisance. Most medicines will help relieve symptoms but cannot make colds go away faster. Natural remedies can
help the bodys immune system work at its best and lessen the
severity of a cold.

Stop your
pet from
becoming
a Hairy
Houdini
.................................................

he ASPCA estimates that 7.5 million

companion animals enter animal
shelters nationwide every year.
Many of these animals are strays, as shelters
house about twice as many stray animals as
pets given up by their owners.
Lost animals also make up a significant portion of the shelter pet population.
Although a great number of shelter animals
are reunited with their owners, some shelter
animals never reunite with their families.
Pet owners must take steps to reduce the
risk that their pets will get lost. Fencing,
secure crates and gates and leashes can cut
down on the number of escapes.

Crate

Crates and carrier kennels are worthwhile

investments for pet owners. Many animal
trainers advocate for crates when conditioning dogs to be obedient. Smaller crates
for cats are ideal when the animal needs
some quiet time or you have to keep the pet
away from guests. Kennels with a handle
make it easier to transport pets to and from
the veterinarian or when taking car rides.
When purchasing a crate, make sure it is
large enough to fit the animal while he or
she is standing and sitting. The pet should
be able to turn around comfortably, but the
crate should not be so large that it enables
the animal to relieve himself in one end and
still have room at the other. If you want to
14

Natures Pathways | February 2016

purchase a larger crate for a pet that will

grow, divide the crate with a piece of wood
or mesh so the animal has only the room it
needs.

Fencing

Fences not only may make for good neighbors, but they also can regulate pets behavior and make pets safer. Pet fencing can
include one fence that encloses the entire
perimeter of your property, a dog run that
is an enclosed area strictly for the dog within
the yard or a combination of both. Cats
have an innate climbing ability, which may
make fencing less effective for outdoor cats.
However, cat owners may want to invest
in a wire cat box extension that fits onto a
window and allows cats access to fresh air
while preventing them from running away.
Fencing should be tall enough to deter
vertical leaps and climbing, but you also
must contend with animals that might
attempt to tunnel under the fence. Digging
chicken wire or another deterrent several
inches below the ground when installing a
fence can help prevent dogs from getting
out of the yard. Speak with a fencing manufacturer and installer about pet-friendly
fence options.

Leashes

Even the most well-trained pet may get

distracted from time to time and dart away.

That is why it is important to keep pets

leashed when outdoors and away from
fenced-in areas.
Leashes come in a variety of sizes and
styles. Its important to choose a leash and
collar that is proportionate to your pet and
one that he or she will not be able to slip
out of. Pet owners who have larger, stronger animals can consider a harness, which
fits around the pets midsection instead of
its neck. This helps provide added control
when walking the pet and can alleviate
pulling tendencies or injuries to the animals
neck from excessive tugging.
In addition to these precautionary tools,
pet owners can provide plenty of stimulation for their pets through toys, games
and social interaction. This will alleviate
boredom and the propensity to escape,
offers The Humane Society of the United
States. Animals may look to get out of
confines when they are isolated and frustrated. Dogs and cats also roam when they
become sexually mature, so its best to have
them spayed or neutered.
Pet retailers carry an extensive inventory
of merchandise to keep cats and dogs safe
and contained. Pet owners also can speak
with a vet or animal trainer about additional ways to keep pets content and safe.

An easy, natural
way to get
enough calcium
as
we
age
...............................................................................
By Grandma Rose

hen we are young and as our bones grow and remodel,

we have plenty of calcium to make new bones;
however, as we age and especially after menopause,
we lose more bone in the remodeling process than is replaced.
Our bones become weaker and we can develop osteoporosis. It is
important to be sure to get enough calcium from our diet as we
age. Calcium supplements do not absorb as well as calcium from
food, and it can end up in the arteries not a good thing! As we
age, surgery on the spine is more common. Most of it requires our
bodies to build calcium in the area of the spine.
Milk and milk products are excellent sources of calcium. Do
we have enough of it in our diets? One cup of milk has 300 mg
of calcium. One cup of yogurt has 450. Is that enough for you?
If you are told to get more calcium in your diet, an easy way to
do it is with powdered milk, which is skim milk with the water
removed. One third of a cup of skim milk powder (available at
all grocery stores) has the same amount of calcium as one cup of
fluid milk. Powdered milk can easily be added to yogurt without
it being noticed. Add a tablespoon or more of powdered milk to a
smoothie each day. If you like hot chocolate, add a tablespoon or
more powdered milk, and you will not notice! Each tablespoon of
powdered milk adds an extra 60 mgs of calcium.
Having extra calcium in our blood is not enough, as it needs
to be absorbed. Vitamin D helps calcium absorption. Vitamin D
is the sunshine vitamin and in Wisconsin we dont get enough of
that, especially this time of year. The wearing of sunscreen blocks
the sunshine vitamin. Vitamin D supplements are an option, and
this is pretty well known. Less well known is the need for vitamin
K2 for calcium absorption. The bacteria in our bodies makes some
vitamin K2. Processed foods as well as antibiotics, including those
fed to the animals we eat for protein, have caused some of us to
have a deficit of bacteria needed for many body processes, including making vitamin K2 for calcium absorption. Gouda cheese is
www.naturespathways.com

made with a bacteria, and as a result, Gouda cheese is an excellent

and delicious way to get more vitamin K2 into your diet. Having a
slice of Gouda cheese each day is good for your bones.
One other thing to help make stronger bones is exercise. When
muscle pulls on bone, it makes the bone stronger. Walking, lap
swimming, water aerobics and weight machines all help. All of it
is good. Pay attention to pulling all your muscles from head to toe.
When considering your calcium needs remember powdered
milk and Gouda cheese are easy ways to get the calcium you need.
Along with the powdered milk, Hi-maize 260 resistant starch fiber

Performing
for
me
.......................................................
By Niki Callahan

n December 12, 2015 Aerial Dance put on their 6th

Annual Christmas Show think a student dance recital
but on aerial apparatus and with adult women. Before I
stepped foot on stage for my first performance of the show I was
worried about making mistakes. I was worried about what other
people would think. What if they think my performance is boring?
What if my body doesnt look quite right on stage? What if I forget
what Im supposed to do? But when the opening music started
playing and the first performance began, it was entirely different
than anything I could have expected or imagined. It was exciting,
it was fun, it was inspiring and most of all it was empowering.
I had spent months preparing for the show. I chose a song for
my solo performance, wrote my routine, practiced and practiced
some more. I learned choreography, practiced tricks for group
routines, and fought the voices in my head telling me that this was
not something I could possibly do. I got angry and frustrated as I
tried to learn dance routines as part of performances and wanted
to quit. Several times throughout my preparation for the show I felt
prepared and confident, only to have that feeling swept away by the
next wave of anxious fear over new choreography, self-doubt, and
overthinking everything. I often felt like I had a cheerleader on one

shoulder and a bully on the other, one telling me I could and the
other giving me all of the reasons I couldnt possibly succeed.
My cheerleader won and I was also lucky to have real life cheerleaders on my side, encouraging me and pushing me to succeed
and complete the goals that I had set for myself. The group of
women who performed in the show are amazing, not only in their
accomplishments as aerialists, but also in their ability to encourage, support, inspire and motivate me and others around them
to succeed and build confidence. It is truly awe inspiring to see
what can be accomplished when a group of people work together
to achieve goals, both collectively and individually. Every woman
who performed in the show was there for her own reason. We all
battle our own feelings, fears and insecurities. We also came to the
table with our own amazing gifts and talents. When we are able to
balance these things and share our gifts and talents while encouraging and supporting others, we are able to help ourselves and others
overcome feelings that limit our success. Without realizing it, we
are able to build an even greater group of strong, confident and
beautiful women who can accomplish anything they set their mind
to. The great women I have the privilege to work with inspire me
daily. They push me to be better, work harder and try new things.
I walked away from this show realizing that I dont need video
or photos to know how my performance went, although I am
grateful for them. I realized that I already knew how it went. I
knew how I felt performing, I knew how I felt the performance
went, and I knew how supported I felt exiting the stage. The video
and photos dont determine if I did well, they are to remember the
feeling of landing my flip, feeling beautiful and the pure joy I felt
in spinning around in my layback.
When I got on stage something just clicked. I realized that I
wasnt there for anybody else, I was there for me. Yes, there was
an audience of several hundred people watching me. My family
and friends were out there somewhere watching me perform and
seeing what I do for the first time ever. But that wasnt why I was
there, that wasnt why I was performing. I was out there and on
that
for me.

Childhood ear
infections
......................................................................
By Dr. Julie Wyss, BS, DC, Webster Certified

hildhood ear infections are frightening to parents mostly because

they come on suddenly with no
warning and at night while fast asleep. Your
child is very hot, flushed and glassy eyed
with a fever; inner ear problems, inner ear
infections and earaches are a simple part
of growing up a sign that your childs
immune system is doing its job!

Why does my child

get a fever?

When a child has an earache like an inner

ear infection, the immune system and
nervous system command many body
functions to speed up, part of your normal
defense system. All this extra activity

produces more work. More work produces

more heat. We call this a fever. It is not a
bad thing: it is part of your body doing
exactly what it needs to do to get rid of the
germs. So dont panic!

How do kids get inner

ear problems?

As chiropractors, we see ear infections as

a malfunction of the immune system and
lowered immune resistance. In other words,
the body is not able to fight off the infection. The main cause of lowered immune
resistance in the body can be the birth itself.
It is very traumatic. The stress associated
with the average uncomplicated delivery
may easily cause a vertebral subluxation,

a misalignment of some of the segments

of the spine affecting the way the childs
nervous system reacts to the world around
them. Additional factors that are thought to
increase risk of ear infection are:
Sibling with history of ear infection
Bottle-fed infants
Exposure to tobacco smoke
Daycare attendees
Prior antibiotic history
Male gender
The most common treatments used for
inner ear problems are antibiotics, decongestants, tubes in the ears and surgery. You
may be surprised to learn that the benefits
of all of these are highly questionable and

research concludes that recovery time
is about the same for children whether
medical treatments were done or nothing
was done at all. Eighty-eight percent of
children with ear infections never need
antibiotics, nor do they shorten the span
of the infection.
The body knows. In order for this to
make sense, parents need to understand
that the body is a self-healing and selfregulating organism. In other words, it is
designed to heal itself and regulate its own
internal functions. When was the last time
you had to instruct your stomach how
many enzymes and chemicals to produce
to digest a meal? The body knows what its

doing, and it does it perfectly without our

meddling.
Chiropractic care is absolutely essential
for children, especially in cases where the
immune system needs a boost. We have
also found that, as an adjunct to chiropractic care, the following will be very helpful
in dealing with children who have chronic
ear infections:
We encourage our parents to avoid
using Q-tips or shoving anything into
the ear canal. Many parents are not
aware that ears are designed to clean
themselves; when an object is shoved
into the ear canal, it causes this selfcleaning mechanism to be clogged.
Warm salt water drops in the nose will
often clear the entrance to the Eustachian tube, the blocked passageway
between the inner ear and the nose.
For the child with a full-blown ear
infection, we recommend a touch of
warm olive oil or oregano oil poured
into the affected ear. This will help to
alleviate the considerable discomfort
almost immediately.
2,000 to 7,000 mg per day of vitamin
C and an 8 ounce glass of raw carrot
juice (vitamin A) daily are both
beneficial.
To give the immune system increased
function, have your child take a
great multi-vitamin. We recommend

Catalyn three times per day from Standard Process.

Vitamin B6 has been known to
increase immune system function.
And, of course, love, lots of hugs and
cuddles will do wonders in helping your
child toward a speedy recovery! Join us on

The
benefits of
weightlifting
for
women
..............................................................

any women steer clear of the free-weight areas inside

their gyms, opting instead for treadmills and other
cardio machines. Some women may not know how to
use weights correctly, while others simply dont want to add any
bulk to their frames.
But research shows that women who adhere to moderate
strength-training programs two to three times per week can
benefit in a variety of ways.
BURN MORE CALORIES: Many people exercise to burn calories

and shed fat, and weight training is an efficient way for women to do
just that. Resistance training is a great way to burn calories, as after
a heavy weight-training session, the body continues to use oxygen,
which increases a persons basal metabolic rate. In addition, as you
increase lean muscle mass, your body burns even more calories as its
muscles contract and it works to repair and build new muscle.
REVERSE METABOLIC DECLINE: Lifting weights can help

reverse the natural slowing down of metabolism that begins in

middle age. Keeping your body working out and your metabolism
elevated for as long as possible can help keep you in top shape.
BUILD STRONGER BONES: Lifting weights does more than

just build muscle. Weightlifting also builds bone density. After

menopause, women may lose up to 20 percent of their bone mass,
and the United States Surgeon General estimates that, by 2020,
half of all Americans could have weak bones due to bone loss.
Women can look to weightlifting to help increase bone density
and reduce their risk of fracture and osteoporosis.
REDUCE RISK FOR HEART DISEASE: Cardiovascular disease

claims the lives of 5.6 million women worldwide each year. Women
are more likely to get heart disease than cancer. A study in The Journal
of Strength and Conditioning found that women who lift weights are
20

Natures Pathways | February 2016

less likely to develop heart disease risk factors, such as large waist
circumference, high triglycerides, hypertension, and elevated glucose
levels. The American Heart Association lists weight training as a
healthy form of exercise for those at risk for heart disease.
COMBAT BACK PAIN: Weight training can help strengthen the

core muscles of the abdomen and back, which may help alleviate
lower back pain. Its important to use proper form when lifting
weights to avoid exacerbating existing back pain or developing
new injuries.
BOOST MOOD AND COMBAT DEPRESSION: Lifting weights

is not just good for the body, its also good for the mind. Women
who strength train regularly can improve their feelings of well-being
and may be able to reduce episodes of depression. A study from
researchers at Harvard University found that 10 weeks of strength
training was effective at reducing symptoms of clinical depression.
RELIEVE STRESS: Any form of exercise can help to relieve

stress, but according to the 2009 study Psychological Aspects of

Resistance Training, those who regularly strength train tend to
manage stress better and experience fewer adverse reactions to
stressful situations than those who do not exercise.
INCREASE ENERGY LEVELS: Lifting weights can boost mind

power and provide a long-term energy boost. Working out in

the morning can be an especially effective way to maintain high
energy levels throughout the day.
Women should not shy away from lifting weights. In addition to
creating a trimmer, healthier body, resistance training offers many
other health benefits.

How to bake
healthier
treats
........................................................................

aking can be a relaxing and rewarding pastime that parents

can share with their children. Baking promotes a variety
of skills, including the ability to follow instructions and
make measurements. Baking also employs mathematics, making
baking a rather delicious science experiment. Perhaps one of the
few pitfalls of baking is indulging in too many sweet treats when
taste testing and then enjoying the fruits of your labors.
But bakers concerned about their health can substitute healthy
ingredients when recipes call for foods bakers would prefer to
avoid. The following ingredients can make healthy additions to
baked-good recipes without sacrificing flavor.
WHOLE WHEAT FLOUR: Flour is at the heart of many baking

or homemade meringue to top cupcakes or decorate cookies.

STEVIA: Stevia is an herbal plant that grows primarily in South

America. Stevia has a long history as a sweetener in that area, and

now has become a popular sugar substitute elsewhere. Stevia is
an all-natural, no-calorie, no-carbohydrate sweetener. The FDA
approved only the purified form of stevia, called stevioside.
Remember to check each brands sugar-to-stevia ratio to make
sure you get the right measurements for your recipe.
EGG WHITES: Replace a whole egg in a recipe with two egg

whites or 1/4 cup of egg substitute.

recipes, including those for cakes, cookies and pies. Refined white
flour may not be the healthiest ingredient, so try whole wheat
flour, which is full of nutrients and an extra dose of fiber. Fiber
can help lower the risk for heart disease and diabetes. Try slightly
less than one cup of whole wheat flour for regular flour as a swap
if a recipe calls for one cup of flour.

CHOCOLATE NIBS: Nibs are processed morsels that do not have

shortening, consider replacing such ingredients with fruit purees,

which often add moisture and texture just as well but without the
same amount of calories. Applesauce and prunes can be helpful in
chocolate dishes. Pumpkin or sweet potato are other purees that

the same amount of added sugar as many chocolate chips. Dark

chocolate nibs can provide a healthy dose of antioxidants as well.
EVAPORATED SKIM MILK: Try evaporated skim milk in place

of heavy cream to make whipped cream for a low-fat option.

Source: MetroCreative Connection.

GREEK YOGURT: Greek yogurt is a powerhouse of protein and

flavor with relatively few calories per serving. It can make a super
substitution in recipes for things like sour cream, buttermilk or
even cream cheese.
APPLESAUCE: Believe it or not, unsweetened applesauce also

can replace some or all of the sugar in a recipe. When doing a 1:1
ratio swap, reduce the amount of liquid in the recipe by 1/4 cup.
MARSHMALLOW OR MERINGUE: Ever check the nutritional

information for many store-bought cake frostings? They pack

a considerable amount of calories, sugar and fat. Some also are
made with hydrogenated oils. Consider using a marshmallow fluff

......................................................................

any families spend winter figuring out how to chase

away cabin fever and endure frigid temperatures until
spring and summer mercifully return. Parents thinking
ahead to swimming pools and days lounging on the beach can
put their daydreams to practical use by planning ahead for their
youngsters summer vacations.
Youth recreational programs and summer camps can bridge
the gap in care between the end of school and the day when
classes resume. Due in part to high demand, parents who want
to place their kids in summer rec programs or summer camps
should being vetting such programs and camps well in advance of
summer. The following are a handful of tips for moms and dads
who want their kids to have fun and fulfilling summers.
ASK FOR RECOMMENDATIONS. Speak with fellow parents

and trusted friends about where they send their children. Personal
recommendations can be very helpful, providing firsthand insight
into a particular camp or program. Schedule appointments to visit
camps that fall within your budget. Take your son or daughter
along so he or she can get a sense of what camp will be like.
EXPLORE ALL OPTIONS. Camps come in more flavors than

ever before. Certain camps may be faith-based ministries while

others may focus on particular sports. Band camps and art camps
may appeal to creative kids. Also, there are plenty of general-interest camps that offer various activities without narrowing in on any
particular one. Parents may need to choose between a sleepaway
camp or day camps, depending on which camp experience they
want for their children.
22

Natures Pathways | February 2016

INQUIRE ABOUT CAMP SCHEDULES. While many camps

are flexible, day camps do not have the same level of flexibility as
after-school programs. Arrangements will need to be made if care
is required after regular camp hours. Speak with camp staff to see
which types of after-hours programs, if any, are available.
DETERMINE YOUR CAMP BUDGET. As varied as program

offerings may be, camps also can vary greatly with regard to cost.
Government-run camps may be less expensive than those offered
by private companies. Day camps typically cost less than those
that provide room and board. Find out if a particular organization
subsidizes a portion of camp costs. Scouting programs often have
a dedicated camp and may offer affordable options for scouts.
Martial arts schools and dance centers frequently offer camp
schedules.
If camp seems out of reach, look into local summer recreation
programs at parks or schools. Such programs may not be as extensive as those offered by camps, but they can quell kids boredom
and keep children occupied during the day.
In addition to camp, remember to plan for some free days so
children can just enjoy some downtime. Such days can break up
the monotony of a routine and provide kids and families time to
relax together.
Summer recreation may be far off, but it is never too early to
start making summer plans, including finding camps and other
activities for kids.

Freshen
up your
home for
the spring
season
...................................................

fter a few months of chilly temperatures, come spring,

many homeowners are eager to throw open their windows
and doors and breathe new life into their homes. Simple
changes made now even before the weather begins to warm
up can improve interior spaces and brighten the atmosphere
of a home.
GO PLANT SHOPPING. Research from NASA suggests adding

at least one plant in your home per 100 square feet is efficient
enough to clean air. Fresh foliage also makes a home feel warm
and inviting. Watering and misting plants introduces moisture
into indoor air, which can make rooms overcome with dry air
from heating systems feel comfortable. Just be sure to avoid overwatering plants, which can lead to mold growth.
SWAP OUT THROW PILLOWS. Accent pillows on beds and

sofas are quick and inexpensive ways to add new bursts of color to
rooms. You may be able to make over a rooms entire color scheme
with new pillows. Invest in pillows that you can switch with each
season so your decor will never look tired or dull.
CLEAN EXISTING LIGHT FIXTURES. Another way to brighten

the mood in a home is to periodically clean light fixtures to make

sure they are working effectively. Spend time dusting them and
cleaning off any accumulated debris. If need be, switch out old
lamp shades for newer ones that let more light shine through. If
inadequate lighting is a problem no matter how many lamps you
have, consult with an electrician about installing more overhead
and accent lighting.
24

Natures Pathways | February 2016

GIVE RUGS AND FLOORS A DEEP CLEANING. Recirculated

air may be full of dust and other microscopic particles that end up
blowing throughout your home. Also, its easy to track in dirt and
other materials on your shoes that become imbedded in carpeting. At least once a year, rent or enlist the surfaces of carpet and
upholstery cleaners to give floors a thorough cleaning. You may
be surprised at how clean and fresh a home looks and smells once
rugs and carpets are deep-cleaned. You also can make a dry carpet
cleaner using baking soda, corn starch and desired fresh herbs for
fragrance. Sprinkle and then vacuum up after a few hours.
COLOR COORDINATE BOOKSHELVES. Group all books with

similarly colored covers together for an instant and eye-appealing

look.
SIMMER SOME HOMEMADE HOME DEODORIZER. In a

large pot, boil water and some scented herbs, such as rosemary,
citrus rinds, vanilla, or lavender. The aroma will waft through the
home, creating a pleasing scent.

INVEST IN NEW WINDOW TREATMENTS. Lightweight

draperies or new blinds or shades can transform the look of a

room. Be sure to keep curtains and blinds open during the day to
maximize the hours of sunlight.
Homeowners can make some simple changes while theyre stuck
indoors and reap the benefits when the weather warms up again.

Healthy in
spirit: You
cant take it
with
you
.........................................................
By Rev. April Kain-Breese

ave you ever watched a loved one die while waiting for an
organ transplant? I have, and it was awful. Day after day,
week after week, we waited to hear that a life-saving liver
would become available, all the while knowing that our hope was
entwined with someone elses tragedy. Someone else would have
to die in order for my husband to survive. As it happened, people
did die and three livers were made available, but none of them was
healthy enough to transplant. My husband was unconscious and
on life support for six weeks, but no healthy liver came, and his
body finally gave out.
Are you an organ donor? You wont need your organs and you
cant take them with you, so why not help someone else? Its an act
of selfless generosity. In the event of your death, your organs could
save the lives of several other people by providing a heart, lungs,
liver, kidneys and other essential gifts.
Does your family know of your wishes regarding end-of-life
care and decisions like life support, tube feedings, CPR and organ
donation? Those who are charged with your care must know of
your wishes. If your family members know that you truly want to
donate your organs, then they may be able to feel that you live on
in the recipients. It is a beautiful thing. Ive spoken with bereaved
parents who, although they were grief-stricken, felt pride in their
childs choice to be an organ donor. But it cant happen if you are
unwilling to take a few little steps to save someone elses life when
yours is winding down.

Here is how to take action today. Visit the

National Organ Donor Registry:
121,848 people are waiting for an organ transplant.
22 people will die each day waiting for an organ.
1 donor can save as many as 8 lives.

Believe youre

beautiful
Aerial Dance Pole Exercise
uplifts and empowers
BY GRACE E. OLSON

Believe youre beautiful.

A simple message made up of three small words, its packed
with profound meaning one Paula Brusky believes in to her core. The
owner of Aerial Dance Pole Exercise is on a mission to provide the women
of the Fox Valley a place to be themselves, be fit, and most importantly,
feel confident in their own skin.
I always tell women to value themselves, she says. When I see them
conquer a fear, no matter what that fear is, it means shes learned shes
stronger than she thought she was, and thats only positive.
Holding an intrinsic spark about the significance in uplifting women
around her, the Appleton native traveled far and wide to unknowingly
at the time come to the conclusion about just how shed show those
around her how much strength they hold. An accomplished musician from
the age of 12, Paula began researching the health and wellness of musicians as a part of her PhD program at the University of Sydney, Australia.
While doing her research, Paula was primarily searching for ways to
improve strength specifically in the scapula thoracic region (between
the shoulder blades), and ways to open and strengthen that area to help
hold large instruments. No one was more surprised than Paula when pole
fitness was suggested.
I had never heard of it, but then realized how extremely common pole
fitness was in Sydney, she remembers. After the first class, I had so much
fun that I signed up. 12-16 weeks later I realized I was a size smaller a
couple months later, Im suddenly strong. For me, pole didnt feel like
working out. It was playing and I loved it.
Aerial Dance Pole Exercise was born and the rest is history.

A state-of-the-art
sport and studio

Paula trained at Studio Verve in Sydney, recently awarded the No. 1

Pole Fitness Studio award from the International Pole Sport Federation
a fact she recognizes has molded her into the business owner she is
today. Aerial Dance Pole Exercise opened in September of 2010, and as
the only pole fitness facility in Northeast Wisconsin, has raised both safety

and accreditation standards for the

industry.
I was lucky because I started my training at
the best in the world and a lot of what we do
emulates things that I saw at Studio Verve, she
says. We are a state-of-the-art facility and have
top of the line gear in all we do. We have every
safety precaution in place that can be you
have to if youre going to do it right.
Right is an understatement
when it comes to
the thought out
preparations that
have gone into both the
bright and cheery aesthetics and also the overall
foundation of Aerial Dance. The space was custom
designed by Paula and a structural engineer, ensuring all apparatus (poles, hammocks and silks) are
safe and sound in a visually appealing environment.
Attention to detail and cleanliness most certainly
play a part, something she is meticulous about.
We frequently wash all fabrics, and disinfect after
every use, she explains. We have alcohol/microfiber
cloths for the poles and were always doing laundry.
Weve made sure our equipment is always top of the
line and clean, and is always ready to be used.
Fully convertible from a pole studio to an aerial
studio within ten minutes, their versatility helps
them to stand out among others in the business.
Instead of one boutique studio, the space holds
three: pole, aerial and fitness, which allows them to
hold classes concurrently.
Pole classes run in 8-week terms, and Paula has done so
intentionally so women have the ability to see growth. Classes
take place once per week, and students also have the option
to come in once a week for practice at their own pace. The pole

Learn from the best!

Paula and the group of trainers at Aerial Dance Pole Exercise have a lot
of fun practicing the sport of pole, but that doesnt mean they take it
lightly. Every member of the team holds several of the following hardearned certifications, which allows them to teach you expertly and
safely.
CPR/AED from American Heart Association or Red Cross
Group fitness certification (from American Council on Exercise and
Aerobics and Fitness Association of America)
At least one aerial certification outside of Aerial Dance, including:

ETED Beginner and Intermediate Pole Instructor; Discoveries

Dance-Pole Instructor; Biomechanics & Safety in Aerial Fitness
Instructor Training; Reaching Tree Tops-Aerial Yoga Level 1 Instructor; OC Poles Aerial Yoga for Aerial Conditioning
Ongoing weekly training, a minimum of 90 minutes every week
most trainers train 3 hours a week in addition to their own practice
and teaching time at Aerial Dance
Continuing education is required every year so instructors learn
new skills and techniques as the sport advances

fitness program uses the vertical dance pole as the apparatus, and students eventually work up to learning spins, transitions and tricks, which eventually turn into
inverts and leg hangs.
Paula is quick to point out and emphasize the word sequential when it comes
to learning the sport of pole.
By the time youre getting ready to do a trick, youve obtained the strength
to do it successfully, which is something thats really important because pole is
challenging, she says. We have so many variations of moves that whatever your
strength level is, we will give you the variation thats appropriate for where you are
then over time, give you a different variation.
Aerial memberships include three apparatus, which are the hammocks, hoops
and silks, are 6-12 months and unlimited to include the pole membership plus
aerial and flexibility and conditioning classes. Paula says most women come in 3
days a week and stay for two hours, embracing both an intense workout class and
also a fun stretching class focusing on tricks.
A third option is flexibility and conditioning classes, which are more parallel to
standard gym classes, Paula explains. Their vertical barre class and pole flow class
use the pole minus the tricks, and mimic dance movement classes. The one thing
each class offers is versatility: with class structure changing every day, workouts are
constantly evolving.
The first time you pick up your bodyweight or get a trick you never thought you
would is the most empowering feeling, Paula explains. If thats possible for you,
it means everything is. Its an amazing opportunity for you to explore yourself. And
thats why I fell in love.

new skills, she says. Pole fitness is all about giving something to yourself, and
were a safe space to do that to gain empowerment.
Aerial Dance has students of all shapes and sizes and provides both beginner
and advanced levels of fitness, but thats not all that matters to Paula and her
team of highly qualified and certified trainers its not the physical transformations either.
Women can knock each other down, and our society tends to encourage
that catty behavior. We dont allow that here. Its never a competition. Its always
about supporting you where you are on your journey, Paula says. Our big thing is
empowering women. We never talk about weight loss here because I dont want to
talk about what youre going to lose. I want to talk about what youre going to gain.
Paula would much rather focus on what a lot of the health and wellness industry
doesnt: the positives. Her goal is to provide an experience that helps her students
feel happy and fulfilled throughout, so theyll want to come back and truly enjoy
their time at Aerial Dance.
Until youre here and youre one of our girls, its hard to understand the support
youre missing out on, she explains. Im so grateful for the women who are here
and who provide that. Everyone is supporting each other. When someone gets
something in class, everyone cheers. Those story lines are special.
Her favorite story lines? Transformations. Likening the journeys shes seen
unfold to butterflies, Paula knows that while the physical makeovers women experience through pole fitness are exceptional, the emotional and mental changes she
sees take the cake.
I look at a lot of women who have gone through abusive relationships and low
self-esteem and think, Those are not the same people who came in, she says.
They start in a cocoon state and turn into butterflies theyre the same fundamental person but now theyve spread their wings. To me, thats the coolest thing.

A welcoming, supportive
network for women

Its not just the workout Paula fell for at Studio Verve in Australia and missed in
returning to the Midwest, but also the camaraderie and support network she experienced in practicing pole fitness.
Its not a solitary sport. Its celebrating each other getting tricks and learning

Gift wrap:
The nightmare
after
Christmas
...................................................
By Christine Miller

vid recyclers know that gift wrap

and tissue paper are not accepted
in our local recycling program, but
they might not know the reasons why.
Local paper mills that recycle the paper
we sell them ask us not to accept gift wrap
for the following reasons:
Many gift wraps are made from
aluminum foil and film plastic. These
gift wraps are usually very shiny and
durable and may not be easily distinguishable from paper wrapping.
During gift opening, people often
throw ribbons, bows, garbage and
tissue paper together inside a large
plastic bag. All items mentioned,
including the plastic bag, cause big
problems for the paper mills as the
mills only want paper.
Tissue paper is not recyclable because
the fibers in tissue paper are too short
and weak. We need long, strong paper
fibers in order to recycle paper.
If you and your family are willing to
inspect and separate 100 percent paper
wrapping from the ribbons, bows, garbage,
tissue paper and plastic bags, then you can
certainly recycle your paper gift wrap.

Are you
taking
in toxic
chemicals?
........................................................
By John Sowinski

o you take in chemicals that are toxic to you? That is like

asking if you are alive. In the world we live we have toxins
all over the place. It is just a fact of life. Luckily the body
has a mechanism to take care of these toxins. Detoxification takes
place in a number of body systems. However, the principal organ of
detoxification is the liver. Life is dependent upon the livers function
as the primary defense against toxins and chemicals that enter from
the bloodstream. The liver is challenged to detoxify 24 hours a day.
There are 2 phases of detoxification in the liver. In phase 1 the
liver changes the toxins into a chemical that can actually be more
toxic to the body. In phase 2, however, the liver makes the toxin
less toxic. These byproducts are then eliminated from the body.
They are eliminated via the kidney into your urine or into the
intestines, and are eliminated in the stool. There are many ways
the body eliminates toxins.
Since the body eliminates these toxins eventually through the
kidneys and through the intestines, making sure your gastrointestinal system and kidneys are healthy is essential to eliminate
these toxins. The best way to ensure that your gastrointestinal
(GI) system is healthy is to make sure you are having healthy
bowel movements. The number one way to ensure this is to take
in enough fiber. It is recommended you get at least 35 gm of fiber
every day. Another way to make sure your GI system is healthy is
to have a healthy gut flora. There are trillions of bacteria in your
GI system and the wrong bacteria can cause many problems. A
probiotic is therefore essential. Finally, elimination of toxins also
happens through the kidneys and the best way to make sure these
toxins are eliminated is to drink plenty of water.
Also essential to eliminating toxins is to have a healthy liver. With
the extra toxins in our lives the liver can get overworked and supporting the detoxification process can help. Effective detoxification in the
body begins and ends with glutathione. Glutathione is recognized as
the most important antioxidant in the body and is found in every
cell of the body. It is essential for liver detoxification and it plays
32

Natures Pathways | February 2016

Life is dependent upon

the livers function as the

enter from the bloodstream.
an important role in both phase I and phase II of liver detoxification. Taking glutathione orally can help restore effective glutathione
levels in the body; however, the glutathione needs to be liposomal
to be effectively absorbed. Liposomal means that it is coated or
surrounded molecularly to enhance oral absorption. Restoration of
glutathione stores can have a major impact on many disease states
such as pulmonary disease, liver disease and neurological disease.
Another way to support healthy glutathione levels is by taking
n-acetyl-cysteine (NAC), the major precursor for increasing
glutathione stores in the body. It should always be accompanied
by 1000 mg of vitamin C to prevent stone formation.
Another way to support healthy glutathione levels is with alpha
lipoic acid (ALA.) ALA has been shown to increase glutathione
stores by 30-70 percent. ALA has other benefits as well as it helps
insulin work more effectively in diabetic patients and has been
shown to slow brain aging and may help to maintain memory.
Supporting liver and kidney health, and GI function is essential
to your health as we need to eliminate the toxins that we come
into contact with. Having the right support for these functions
can be achieved with the right mix of supplements.

Everyday
ways
to save
money
....................................................

aving more money is a goal for many people. Whether

retirement is looming or decades down the road, saving as
much money as possible is a great way for men and women
to plan for their financial futures.
But saving money is not always so easy, especially as the cost of
living continues to rise in so many parts of the world. In its 20152016 Salary Budget Survey, WorldatWork, a global association
for human resources management professionals and business
leaders, found that U.S. employees can expect an average base
salary increase of 3.1 percent in 2016. That marks only a slight
increase from 2015, and many working professionals wonder if
that increase will be enough for them to start saving more money.
Cost of living salary increases likely wont be enough for
working professionals to grow their savings considerably, if at
all. Fortunately, there are several ways that men and women can
cut back each day and grow their savings without affecting their
quality of life.
MAKE YOUR OWN COFFEE AT HOME. While few people may

give it much thought, that $2 or $3 coffee you buy each morning

adds up to a substantial amount of money each month. If your
daily cup of joe from the coffee shop next to your office costs $2.50,
thats $12.50 per week (not counting weekend mornings), $50 per
month and $600 per year. Buying coffee at the grocery store and
preparing it at home wont cost anywhere near that much, saving
you hundreds of dollars per year, which you can put directly into
your savings account.
34

Natures Pathways | February 2016

BRING YOUR LUNCH TO WORK. Many men and women

already know that dining in instead of out is a great way to cut back
on unnecessary spending. But its not just skipping nights out on the
town that can help save money. Rather than spending somewhere
between $5 and $10 every day on lunch at the office commissary or
nearby restaurants, bring your lunch with you. Bringing your lunch
allows you to buy in bulk rather than pay for each individual midday
meal, and that can add up to considerable cost savings over the year.
TRIM SOME FAT FROM YOUR CABLE BILL. While cable

providers have been slow to embrace customizable plans that

allow customers to pick and choose their channels in an effort
to save money each month, some providers have begun to offer
such plans. Contact your cable provider to see if you can customize your plan so you are no longer paying for channels you dont
watch. If your provider does not allow you to customize, consider
cutting your cable entirely. Streaming services such as Netflix and
Amazon Prime cost a fraction of monthly cable subscriptions,
and these services continue to increase their offerings.
WORK WITH A FINANCIAL ADVISOR. If you keep coming up

empty in your search for ways to save, work with a financial advisor.
Financial advisors can help you establish a monthly budget so you
are in a good position to save. In addition, such advisors can suggest
ways to grow your money that you might not know about.

Sustainable
flooring
options
abound
.........................................................

itchen and bathroom remodeling projects tend to make

great investments, earning homeowners significant
returns when they sell their homes down the road. But
flooring upgrades are another home renovation project that can
attract attention and help sellers when they put their homes on
the market.
Home flooring options abound, and it is easy to get excited and
overwhelmed about flooring renovation projects. When choosing new flooring materials, homeowners should keep in mind the
latest consumer trends, as those trends might help them recoup
more of their flooring investment down the road.
One popular flooring trend is the use of sustainable materials. In
addition to the more widely known benefits of choosing sustainable
flooring, such as protecting natural resources and reducing a homes
carbon footprint, sustainable flooring can help reduce indoor air
pollution. Various studies from the U.S. Environmental Protection
Agency have shown that indoor air pollutant levels may be higher
indoors than outdoors. A major contributor to indoor air pollution
are the volatile organic compounds, or VOCs, being off-gassed by
carpeting and other flooring in a home.
Flooring manufacturers and designers are embracing the green
design and remodeling movement. Today there are many beautiful and sustainable eco-flooring options. Here are some of the
more popular materials.
BAMBOO: Contrary to popular belief, bamboo is not a wood, but

a grass. It is a fast-growing grass, and that makes it a smart choice

in many design applications. Also, unlike wood, which will absorb
moisture and can warp, bamboo repels water and can be used for
flooring in areas where one wouldnt think to put wood, such as
in bathrooms, entryways or mudrooms. Bamboo is naturally very
light in color, but can be stained in many different hues to give
www.naturespathways.com

homeowners more options.

GREEN CARPETING: Consumers can now find a wide range

of sustainable carpets and rugs that are available at competitive

prices. Wool carpets made with undyed or vegetable-dyed yarns
and minimal glues are some options. Some carpets are even made
from recycled content, such as rubber and plastics. Water-based,
low-VOC adhesives paired with recycled cotton padding can
reduce the toxicity and impact of carpeting even further.
CORK: Growing in popularity, cork is a material harvested from

the bark of cork trees found in the forests of the Mediterranean.

The bark grows back every three years, so it is a handy renewable
resource. Cork boasts fire-retardant properties and may naturally
repel insects. It can usually be stained to suit various color schemes.
RUBBER: Rubber flooring may call to mind fitness gyms and

playground safety substrate, but its also slowly finding its way
into homes. Made from recycled tires, rubber flooring is flexible
underfoot and can be long-lasting and colorful.
RECLAIMED WOOD: Rather than purchasing brand new hard-

wood planks for flooring, homeowners can opt for reclaimed

wood reused from other building applications. After some
sanding, staining and finishing, reclaimed wood provides homeowners with the opportunity to choose traditional hardwood
flooring without any concerns about deforestation.
Eco-friendly flooring materials continue to evolve and can be
smart choices in todays homes.

Nov. 25, 2013, when his life changed suddenly.
He came home from work that day complaining of tooth pain
and weakness, his wife, Tanya Nechodom said. Doctors at Appleton Medical Center found his heart valves completely blocked and
told the family Bruce was in cardiac arrest. He was transferred to
UW Hospital in Madison when his condition deteriorated. There,
doctors doing an ablation surgery said, We lost him.

Ive learned never to take life for granted, she said, since I came
so close to losing my brother several times.
Today Bruce waits for a new heart. The pump is only a bridge
to transplant, Tanya said. He needs a heart. Its so overwhelming
for us to know that someone must die to give you this precious
gift. Meanwhile, waiting is the hardest part. Bruce wants to go
back to work and do things unassisted like he used to do.
A lot of people are pulling for him. In addition to their two

Do your drugs
really
work?
.........................................................................
By Steve Lankford

ost consumers assume that the

medications they are taking are
providing them benefit. They
may not be happy about the side effects,
but they are nonetheless confident enough
that the drugs are necessary. Consumers are also afraid not to take prescribed
medications.
The dirty little secret is that many
prescribed medications have a very low
percentage of effectiveness; however, the

reported results are couched in such terms

as to make the drugs seem more effective
than they are. In this article I will teach
you how to evaluate the effectiveness of
drugs. I will use a popular statin drug as
an example, but these calculations are also
available for many drugs.
Lets use the drug Lipitor and lets discuss
how to evaluate the risk. Lipitor advertising in the big print says Lipitor reduces
the risk of heart attack by 36 percentin

patients with
multiple risk factors for heart disease*.
This is the headline that sounds so impressive. But the truth is found in the small
print. The dramatic 36 percent figure has an
asterisk. It says, That means in a large clinical study, 3 percent of the patients taking a

medications

percentage of
effectiveness...
sugar pill had a heart attack compared to 2
percent of the patients taking Lipitor. This
study lasted 3 1/3 years.
In order to understand what this means
we have to do a little math.

Relative risk percent (RR)

Relative risk formula is: Event rate of the

drug group divided by the event rate of the
placebo group.
In the Lipitor example above the event
rate is the number of heart attacks. In the
Lipitor group, 2 out of 100 (2 percent) had
heart attacks. The event rate is 2. In the
placebo group, 3 out of 100 (3 percent) had
heart attacks. The event rate is 3. Therefore the relative risk (RR) for Lipitor is 2
divided by 3 or 66 percent.

Relative risk reduction

percent (RRR)

The relative risk reduction is simply 100

percent minus the RR percent. In our
Lipitor example RRR = 100 percent 66
percent = 34 percent. So this is where the
dramatic figure for Lipitor is derived. But
we must go further to see how this affects
the average person. The RRR is only the
difference between those who had heart
attacks. It does not tell us the risk reduction for those who did not have heart
attacks. Remember, 100 people had to take
the Lipitor for over 3 years to reduce the
number of heart attacks from 3 to 2.

Absolute risk reduction

percent (ARR)

The absolute risk reduction is the percentage of how many people will actually
benefit from taking the drug. The ARR is
calculated as event rate percentage of the
www.naturespathways.com

placebo minus the event rate percentage

of the drug. In our example, 3 percent had
heart attacks on the placebo and 2 percent
had heart attacks on the drug. Therefore the ARR = 3 percent 2 percent = 1
percent. This means that 1 person in 100
will actually be benefited by the drug. And
this leads to our last formula.

Number needed to treat

(NNT)

Number needed to treat reveals how many

people will need to take a particular drug
in order to benefit one person. This NNT
is calculated as 100 divided by the ARR.
For Lipitor the NNT = 100 divided by 1 =
100. This means that 100 people must be
treated with Lipitor to prevent 1 person
from having a heart attack.
And do not forget that this was a reduction
in people who already had heart attacks.
If you are a healthy person, then statin
therapy has not been shown to reduce
your risk of heart disease or heart attacks.
Studies show that for healthy people with
elevated LDL cholesterol, there is no statistical difference in the number of heart
attacks in those that took statin drugs and
those who did nothing. Lipitor states in its
own literature the following Lipitor has
not been shown to prevent heart disease
or heart attacks.

So basically the case is this with Lipitor:

if you are healthy and you take Lipitor
there is a 1 percent chance that it will help
you. There is a 99 percent chance that
you will do just as well if you dont take
the drug. In addition, there is the cost of
Lipitor at over $1,000 per year and the risk
of side effects.
So there are perhaps millions of consumers that take Lipitor to lower their LDL
cholesterol because they are afraid that
high cholesterol is a sign of impending and
sure doom. This is surely not the case, but
it is most certainly the prevailing thought
amongst doctors and consumers. Lowering cholesterol by the use of statin drugs in
healthy people is simply not good medicine.
Let me restate here, that statins have been
shown slightly beneficial in people who
have had previous heart attacks. If you are
under a doctors care, please discuss these
issues prior to making any changes.

Red or pink?
Think
green this
Valentines
Day
.............................................................
By Jennifer Semrau

ebruary is the month of love! In 2015, nearly $19 billion was

spent on Valentines Day gifts. Wow! But how much of that was
perhaps cute, but silly, and ended up in the garbage too soon
thereafter? Does your special someone really need a pink monkey
that says, I love you? Consider the environment in your Valentines
celebration, and youll have a red, pink and green holiday.

The card

How do you express your love? Tell them? No, in a card of course!
Some holiday cards are literally 2 feet tall! Bigger isnt necessarily better. Instead, why not send an e-card? You can customize it
to say exactly what you would like, include personalized content
and pictures with essentially no environmental impact. Prefer to
hand your loved one a card? Choose a card made out of recycled
content or even tree-free papers.

Flowers

Flowers are a part of many Valentines Day celebrations. Over $52

million was spent on flowers for Valentines Day in 2014 alone.
Why not choose a flowering plant that will last for years versus cut
flowers? Or an indoor herb garden for the Epicurean in your life?
If your sweetie doesnt have a green thumb, look beyond roses.
Choose florists or greenhouses that use organic or sustainably

grown flowers. After Valentines Day, you can compost them or

save the dried flowers.

The date

Your Valentines Day date can keep Mother Earth in mind as well.
A mild February day can include a hike down a trail or walk in the
park, star gazing at night or bird watching during the day. Other
fun activities include snowshoeing, sledding, skiing or ice skating.
This is Wisconsin after all! A bit too brisk for outdoor activities? A
night in with a movie or home cooked meal, are a treat. If opting
to dine out, consider a restaurant that specializes in organic or
locally sourced foods.

The gift

It goes without saying that handmade gifts rank amongst the best
presents. A homemade gift from the heart is especially significant on Valentines Day. A handmade craft, home baked treat
or favorite dessert are always a hit. Need to purchase a gift and
minimize your environmental impact? Go to the farmers market!
Indoor farmers markets are located all over northeast Wisconsin. You can find handmade jewelry, crafts, candles, chocolates/
treats, soaps/lotions, baked goods, syrup/honey and so much
more. Other good gift ideas include fair trade/organic coffee or

gift certificates for local establishments. Another environmentally

friendly gift idea is to plant a tree in the spring to symbolize your

I am very happy so far working with Natures Pathways

and the results of my ad. It has only been running a couple
months and I already have 13 new clients off the ad. Not
only are they new clients, but also clients that continually
book over and over with me! This is different from my
experience working with a coupon magazine in which case
people tended to come in and just use the coupon and
then didnt come back. I also have seen a better response
in this short time with Natures Pathways than what I have
with the coupon magazine. The clients I have pulled from
Natures Pathways so far are quality middle aged or retired
people that are great to work with.

Water: The
wellspring of
well-being
................................................................
By Sharon Paprocki, MAC, NCC, LPC

iven the right circumstances it is possible for each of us

to see our reflection in water. Besides seeing our outward
appearance in still water, water holds an internal reflection of who we are as well. Water makes up more than two thirds
of our bodyweight. The percentages vary depending on the report
but generally speaking it is believed that our brains are 80-85
percent water, our blood is 80 percent water, our muscles are
75 percent water, our skin is 70 percent water, our bones are 20
percent water, and the list goes on. In addition to making up large
percentages of the parts of our bodies water also plays an integral
part in our digestion, helps to remove waste, cushions our joints
and helps regulate our body temperature. As if this is not enough,
staying hydrated can help in stress reduction, ward off irritability,

increase concentration and memory functioning. Clearly given

these statistics it makes sense that keeping ourselves hydrated will
help positively impact both our physical and mental well-being.
Dehydration can happen any time. Most of us are more aware
of dehydration during the hot summer months but the dry air
during this time of year (winter) can actually rob our bodies of
water faster than when the weather is hot. So start today to pay
attention to your water intake. Everybodys optimum hydration
level is different. Its not so much a one size fits all recommendation
as the often quoted general rule of eight 8 ounce glasses of water
each day would have us believe. A more beneficial recommendation is that we need to drink half of our bodyweight in ounces.
For instance, a person weighing 150 pounds actually needs just

over nine 8 ounce glasses of water for a day. (150 divided by 2 is
75. 75 divided by 8 is 9.3.) The website Natural Health Psychologist suggests the following simple ways to meet your daily water
needs:
Drink a glass of water first thing in the morning (sleep dries
you out).
Consume more water dense foods such as fruits and
vegetables.
Drink more water throughout the day by keeping a
water bottle near you on the job, in your car and by your
nightstand.
Drink water before workouts and during workouts, when
flying, and when driving.
If water is a boring taste experience, flavor your water with
lemon or other natural flavoring.
Years ago there was a radio personality named Paul Harvey. He
was famous for saying, and now, the rest of the story. There is
more to the story of waters importance for us than hydration
alone.
In the 1990s, Dr. Masaru Emoto conducted experiments on
water. He wanted to find out what effect words, music, prayers
and general environment would have on the structure of water.
Dr. Emotos experiments included exposing water to positive
and negative words, music, etc. During the exposure to these
stimuli Dr. Emoto had photographers taking pictures of the water
crystals. The photos documented that the water was far more
symmetrical and aesthetically pleasing when exposed to positive
words, music, prayers or environments. Give yourself a treat and
check out the photos at http://www.masaru-emoto.net/english/
water-crystal.html.
Let this soak in for a moment. Water can be positively or negatively influenced by words, music, prayers and environments; and
as we previously established we are more than two thirds water.
Besides staying hydrated, it is clearly in our best interest to make
sure the water, although mostly invisible, in our bodies is receiving the most optimal influences possible. How do we do that?
Being aware and walking awake to our thoughts (the words we
say to ourselves), the music we listen to and the environment we
create for ourselves is a great start to making sure the water within

us is being positively influenced. Participating in various energy

and wellness services like Reiki, reflexology, massage, meditation,
craniosacral or EFT offers us the opportunity to experience an
environment where a practitioner is focused on sharing positive
energy, support, love and light. What a great recipe for fostering
happy water crystals in all parts of our body.

Garlic
Allium sativum
....................................

arlic is the edible bulb from a plant

in the lily family. It has been used
as both a medicine and a spice for
thousands of years. Garlics most common
folk or traditional uses as a dietary supplement are for high cholesterol, heart
disease, and high blood pressure. Other
folk or traditional uses include prevention of certain types of cancer, including
stomach and colon cancers. Garlic cloves
can be eaten raw or cooked. They may also
be dried or powdered and used in tablets
and capsules. Raw garlic cloves can be used
to make oils and liquid extracts.

What the science says

Some evidence indicates that taking garlic

can slightly lower blood cholesterol levels;
studies have shown positive effects for
short-term (1 to 3 months) use. However,
an NCCIH-funded study on the safety

and effectiveness of three garlic preparations (fresh garlic, dried powdered garlic
tablets, and aged garlic extract tablets) for
lowering blood cholesterol levels found no
effect.
Preliminary research suggests that
taking garlic may slow the development of
atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries),
a condition that can lead to heart disease
or stroke.
Evidence suggests that taking garlic may
slightly lower blood pressure, particularly
in people with high blood pressure.
Some studies suggest consuming garlic
as a regular part of the diet may lower the
risk of certain cancers. However, no clinical trials have examined this. A clinical
trial on the long-term use of garlic supplements to prevent stomach cancer found no
effect.

of allicin, the main active compound of
garlic.

Side effects and cautions

Garlic appears to be safe for most adults.

Side effects include breath and body
odor, heartburn, upset stomach, and allergic reactions. These side effects are more
common with raw garlic.
Garlic can thin the blood (reduce the
ability of blood to clot) in a manner similar
to aspirin. This effect may be a problem
during or after surgery. Use garlic with
caution if you are planning to have surgery
or dental work, or if you have a bleeding
disorder.
Garlic has been found to interfere with
the effectiveness of saquinavir, a drug used
to treat HIV infection. Its effect on other
drugs has not been well studied.
Tell all your health care providers about
any complementary health approaches you

The best (and

worst) foods for
heart
health
.............................................................................

o one wants to hear from their doctors that they have

joined the millions of people across the globe to be diagnosed with heart disease. The Heart Foundation reports
that heart disease, which includes diseases of the heart and
cardiovascular system and stroke, is the No. 1 cause of death in
the United States, affecting both men and women and most racial/
ethnic groups. Heart disease also is one of the leading causes of
death in Canada, claiming more than 33,000 lives per year.
Many factors contribute to the development of heart disease,
including smoking, lack of exercise and stress. Diet and whether
a person is overweight or obese also can have a direct link to
heart health. Diet, particularly for those with diabetes and poorly
controlled blood sugar levels, is a major concern.
A variety of foods are considered helpful for maintaining a
strong and healthy heart and cardiovascular system, while others
can contribute to conditions that may eventually lead to cardiovascular disease or cardiac arrest. Moderation enables a person to
sample a little of everything, but not to make any one food a habit.
The following are some foods to promote heart health and some
foods you might want to avoid.

Good

Tree nuts: Tree nuts contain unsaturated fats that can help

lower LDL cholesterol (the bad stuff) and improve HDL (the
good stuff). Nuts also are a filling source of protein and other
healthy nutrients.
Whole grains: Whole grains contain complex carbohydrates
for energy, as well as protein and fiber. Fiber can help scrub
cholesterol from the blood, lowering bad cholesterol levels.
Fatty fish: Many cold-water, fatty fish, such as halibut,
herring and salmon, contain omega-3 fatty acids, which are
heart-healthy. Omega-3s also can be found in walnuts, flaxseed and some soy products.
Beans: Beans and other legumes are an excellent source
of protein and can be a stand-in for meats that are high in
saturated fat. Beans also contain cholesterol-lowering soluble
fiber and folate, which can reduce blood homocystein levels.
The Bean Institute reports that consuming beans may reduce

cholesterol levels by roughly six to 10 percent.

Yogurt: Researchers in Japan found yogurt may protect

against gum disease. Left untreated, gum disease may elevate

a persons risk for heart disease. Yogurt contains good bacteria
that can counteract bad bacteria and boost immunity.
Raisins: Raisins contain antioxidants that may help reduce
inflammation. Inflammation is often linked to heart disease
and other debilitating conditions. Fresh produce also is a
good source of antioxidants.

Poor

Fried foods: Many fried foods have little nutritional value, as

they tend to be high in saturated and trans fats. French fries

are particularly bad because they are carbohydrates fried and
then doused in salt.
Sausage: Processed meats have frequently earned a bad
reputation among cardiologists, but sausage can be a big
offender, due in large part to its high saturated fat content.
Red meats: Enjoying a steak is probably not as bad as eating
a deep-fried brownie, but its best to limit red meat consumption to about 10 percent or less of your diet. Red meats can
have a considerable amount of cholesterol, saturated fat and
calories.
Added sugars: Sugar can increase blood pressure and
triglyceride levels. Sugar often hides out in foods that you
would not associate with the sweetener. Plus, many people
unwittingly consume too much sugar simply through sugarsweetened beverages and ready-to-eat cereals.
Salty foods: Leave the salt shaker in the spice cabinet and
opt for herbs for flavoring, advises the American Heart Association. High-sodium diets often are to blame for hypertension, a major risk factor for heart disease.
Dairy: Artery-clogging saturated fat also can be found in
dairy products, particularly the full-fat versions. Butter, sour
cream and milk can be problematic when people overindulge.
Opt for low-fat dairy when possible.

Boutique and business law continues to be the
heart and soul of our practice. However, since we
opened our doors we have significantly grown two
other areas of deep expertise: litigation and estate
planning. Within each of these three areas we apply the same efficient use of people, systems and
technology to provide incredible service, superior

Hunt with a Heart

On November 25, 2013 Bruce Nechodom (55)

came home from work complaining of tooth pain
and weakness. He was taken to AMC where they
found his heart valves were completely blocked,
and he was in cardiac arrest. He was transferred
to UW-Madison Hospital and the next day he
had an ablation surgery. The doctors came out
of surgery and said, We lost him. Call the family. Twenty minutes later Bruce was revived and
placed on life support to stabilize him. Bruces
heart did not heal, an LVAD device was surgically
implanted and Bruce was placed on the transplant list on 6-4-2014 and is currently waiting for
a heart transplant.
A Celebration of Support for Bruce and his
family will be held on Saturday, Feb. 20, at the
Starlite Club, W2091 County Rd JJ, Kaukauna.
The money raised from this celebration will help
with medical expenses incurred as well as living
expenses during this difficult time.
Any contributions you send to the Community
Benefit Tree on behalf of Bruces event will be tax
deductible. Please make checks payable and mail
to: Community Benefit Tree, 2204 Crooks Ave.,
