Early

The Saturday before the game is not

the time to realize you want to host
a Super Bowl party. Sure, it can be
done but things will go a lot more
smoothly if you start prepping early.

Step one: select an event type

Do you want to throw a shindig for

the whole neighborhood to cheer on
your favorite team, or will it be just
a small gathering for close friends?
Everything from the menu depend on
this decision, so make this decision
early. Once you do, fire off invitations
at least a week in advance. Anything
from e-mails to calls or text messages should do the trick. Once you
get a head count for about how many
guests to expect, you can start figuring out everything else.

Step two: Plan the menu

Do you want to keep it simple with

chips, dips and pizza? Or maybe
jazz things up with some homemade
goodies based around the football
(or team) theme? Figuring this out

Super Bowl 2016 Preview

early will allow you to plan for cooking

and prep time (if needed), or call in
advance to get your order in at the
neighborhood pizza place (which will
almost certainly be slammed with
calls on game day). This also is a
good time to rope in friends who might
want to bring food, so you can make
sure all the basics are covered.

Step three: Stock up early

This is where all that planning can

come in handy. Once you know the
type of gathering and about how
many people youll have in attendance, you can get a jump on shopping a few days before the party. Most
meat can be purchased a couple of
days early or longer if its frozen
while chips and drinks almost certainly will be flying off the shelves as
the game gets closer. If youre ahead
of the curve, you can be stocked up
on every-thing by mid-week so theres
no need to deal with the shopping
rush as the weekend draws near.

With Sides
Assuming you have your main course
locked down, youll also need some
solid sides to complement the dish. You
could always go with staples such as
chips, but a bit more effort could put
your party over the top.

Homemade onion rings

Onion rings can provide something

more unique than the tried-and-true
French fries, and theyre still fairly easy
to make. Heres a recipe from Delish:
1 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
1/2 cup cornstarch
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 teaspoon coarse salt
12 ounces Seltzer water
6 cups vegetable oil
1/2 cup fresh parsley leaves
1 Vidalia onion
Coarse salt
Line a baking sheet with paper towels;
set aside. Place onion rings in a large
bowl of ice water for 10 minutes; drain
and pat dry. In a large bowl, whisk together flour, cornstarch, baking powder,
salt, and seltzer.
In a heavy 5-quart pot or Dutch oven,
heat oil over high until a deep-fry
thermometer registers 375 degrees F.
Working in seven to eight batches, place
onions in batter; using your fingers, lift
out, letting excess drip off. Carefully
place in oil, making sure to not overcrowd the pot; cook until golden brown,
2 to 3 minutes.

Super Bowl 2016 Preview

Transfer rings to prepared baking sheet,

and season with salt. Keep warm in a
250-degree F oven. Return oil to 375
degrees F before starting next batch.
Once all the onion rings are done, place
on a platter. Very carefully place parsley
in pot (oil will spatter), and fry until crisp,
10 seconds; remove, using a spider or
slotted spoon, and season with salt.
Sprinkle onions with parsley.

cool, crumble. Discard fat from pan, but

do not wipe clean; set pan aside. Reset
oven to 475 degrees F.

Potato skins

Arrange skins, skin side up, in single

layer on reserved pan. Brush with oil;

Potato skins are another staple that

could make a great addition to the dinner line-up. Heres how Delish recommends cooking them up:
4 large baking (russet) potatoes
4 slices center-cut bacon
1 tablespoon Extra virgin olive oil
salt
Pepper
1/3 cup reduced-fat sour cream
1 ounce Pecorino Romano cheese
1 large tomato
2 tablespoons snipped fresh chives
Preheat oven to 400 degrees F.
With fork, pierce each potato 3 times.
Place potatoes on parchment paper.
Microwave on high 8 minutes. Turn
over; microwave on high 10 minutes
longer or until tender. Cover with kitchen
towel; let cool.
Meanwhile, in 18-inch-by-12-inch jellyroll pan, arrange bacon in single layer.
Roast 10 to 12 minutes, or until browned
and crisp. Drain on paper towels. When

Cut each potato in quarters lengthwise.

With spoon, scoop potato from skins,
leaving about 1/4 inch of potato with
skin and being careful not to break
through skin. Reserve cooked potato for
another use.

sprinkle with 1/8 teaspoon each salt and

freshly ground black pepper.
Roast 13 to 15 minutes or until browned
and crisp. Transfer, skin sides down, to
serving plate.
To assemble, spread 1 teaspoon sour
cream on each skin. Top with cheese,
tomato, bacon, and chives.

Face Painting 101

If you want to go all out with your fandom, you cant go wrong
with face paint. From team colors to more-detailed logo work,
there are a lot of options to cheer on your favorite team.
In an interview with Chron, Houston Face Painting and
Balloon Art owner Michele Ficocello offered some tips and
tricks for rolling on the paint.

Pick the right paint

Ficocello noted that just because a paint is labeled

non-toxic doesnt mean its safe for skin. Make an effort to
track down paint specifically designed to be used on skin.
One brand to consider is Snazaroo,
though there are other skin-friendly
brands out there. Face-friendly products
can often be found at art-supply
and costume stores. Also take the
temperature into account. If its going to
be hot, try to choose a paint that wont
drip off in the heat.

Choosing glitter, brushes

If you choose to use glitter as part of

your design, Ficocello recommended
using glitter dust and not glitter.
Apply glitter dust while paint is still wet,
in small sections. Choosing a brush is
extremely important. Brushes come in
many sizes and shapes, and Ficocello
recommended using several different
sizes. If youre going for a single-color
look, use a wide brush.

Go big

When figuring out your design, lifestyle

blogger NellieBellie recommends going
big, as smaller designs often can end

up harder to paint than a large face-covering look.

Many people make the mistake of starting their face painting
attempts with smaller designs on cheeks, think-ing that they
will be easier to accomplish than the full-face options. They
are sadly mistaken, Nellie wrote. The smaller the image, the
more detailed and concise you will need to be in your lines. A
flower on the cheek is a hundred times harder to make than
a full-face flower. A soccer ball on the cheek is harder than
an entire superhero on the whole face, simply because of
how concise your lines need to be on that smaller scale. So if
youre just starting out, go big.

Chips and dip are a key component

of any Super Bowl party. If you want
to try something a bit outside the box,
however, put that salsa jar back in the
fridge and whip up something delicious
and easy in just a few minutes.

Swiss and Bacon Dip

One interesting, delicious option is

Swiss and Bacon Dip. The recipe
comes from chef Rachel Ray via Food
Network:
8 slices center cut bacon, chopped
8 ounces softened cream cheese
1/2 cup mayonnaise
2 rounded teaspoons prepared Dijon
style mustard
1 1/2 cups shredded Swiss cheese,
available on dairy aisle
3 scallions, chopped
1/2 cup smoked almonds, coarsely
chopped
Baby carrots and a selection of spiced
flat breads, cocktail sized pumpernickel
or rye breads, or sliced whole grain
baguettes, for dipping
Preheat oven to 400 degrees F.
Brown bacon in nonstick skillet over
medium-high heat. Drain crisp bacon
bits on paper towels.
In a mixing bowl, combine cream
cheese, mayonnaise, Dijon, Swiss and
scallions with cooked bacon. Transfer
to a shallow small casserole or baking
dish and bake until golden and bubbly
at edges, 15 to 18 minutes. Top with
chopped smoked almonds. Place
dip on a platter and surround warm
casserole with breads and carrots for
dipping.
Variation: Swiss and Bacon Dip
with Horseradish. Stir in 2 rounded
teaspoons prepared horseradish when
combining cheese and bacon.

2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice
1/3 cup olive oil, plus 4 tablespoons
1/4 cup (loosely packed) fresh Italian parsley
leaves
Salt
Freshly ground black pepper
6 pitas
1 teaspoon dried oregano
Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F.
Place the beans, garlic, lemon juice, 1/3 cup
olive oil and parsley in the work bowl of a food
processor. Pulse until the mixture is coarsely
chopped. Season with salt and pepper, to taste.
Transfer the bean puree to a small bowl.
Cut each pita in half and then into 8 wedges.
Arrange the pita wedges on a large baking sheet.
Pour the remaining oil over the pitas. Toss and
spread out the wedges evenly. Sprinkle with
the oregano, salt and pepper. Bake for 8 to 12

recipe for The Ultimate Barbecued

2 slabs baby back ribs (about 3
pounds)
Kosher salt and freshly ground black
pepper
Extra-virgin olive oil
2 bacon slices
4 sprigs fresh thyme
1/2 onion
3 smashed garlic cloves
2 cups ketchup
1 cup peach preserves
2 tablespoons Dijon mustard or 1
tablespoon dry mustard
2 tablespoons brown sugar
1/4 cup molasses
2 tablespoons red or white wine
vinegar
1 teaspoon ground cumin
1 teaspoon ground paprika

Preheat the oven to 250 degrees F. Put

the ribs on a baking sheet, season with
salt and pepper and drizzle with olive
oil. Stick them in the oven, and let the
ribs bake, low and slow, for 1 1/2 hours.
Meanwhile, make the sauce. Wrap the

Super Bowl 2016 Preview

bacon around the middle of the thyme

sprigs and tie with kitchen twine so you
have a nice bundle. Heat a 2-count of
oil in a large saucepan over medium
heat. Add the thyme bundle and cook
slowly for 3 to 4 minutes to render the
bacon fat and give the sauce a nice
smoky taste. Add the onion and garlic
and cook slowly, without coloring, for 5
minutes. Add all of the rest of the sauce
ingredients, give the sauce a stir, and
turn the heat down to low. Cook slowly
for 20 minutes to meld the flavors. Put
some sauce in a separate bowl for
basting, reserving the remaining sauce
for serving.
Baste the ribs with the sauce and let
them continue cooking, basting twice
more, for 30 more minutes. When the
ribs are cooked, take them out of the
oven. You can let them hang out like
this until youre ready to eat.
When ready to eat, preheat the broiler
for 5 minutes and broil the ribs, basting
with the sauce. They should become
crisp and charred, about 5 minutes on
each side. Pick the onion and garlic out
of the sauce and serve with ribs.

Hey, the Super Bowl only comes around once every

year, so why not blow it out with a game staple as the
centerpiece meal?
When prepared correctly, ribs are delicious and make a
perfect Super Bowl party meal. Pretty much any side can
go with them, which means theyre also ultra-flexible when
putting a menu together.
Of course, before cooking them up, you have to decide
exactly how you want to prepare them. Here are some of

Youll need the TV set just right to watch

the game, so if you dont get this right,
the Super Bowl party is over before it
begins. When talking about a sporting
event, the typical rule of thumb is that
bigger is better. Sporting events
include a lot of small details, from the
centimeter-level view of a toe hitting
the end zone to that field goal kick
that barely slips through the upright.
It goes without saying, but make sure
the TV is high-definition the higher
the resolution the better. Aim for 4K, if
possible. Start with a TV at a minimum
of 40 inches, and go up drastically from
there.
Aside from the TV, the programming
service is the second biggest factor that
can wreck your party. From satellite to
cable (or over-the-air antenna), decide
carefully. Reliability is key in this regard,
because the last thing anyone wants is
for the service to go out in the middle of
the game.

Make sure youre focused

No matter where you are hosting your

Super Bowl party, make sure the TV is
the central focus of the room. The TV
doesnt always need to be the focus
of a space when decorating, but a
Super Bowl party is a different animal.
Its all about watching the game, so
make sure every chair and piece of
furniture is properly aligned. Everyone in
attendance needs to have a proper line
of sight to the screen, so think ahead
when adding extra seating to the room.
Stagger seats as needed if stacking
multiple rows, but be sure every seat in
the house can see the game.

Match the decor

This is a dealers choice, but if your

favorite team is playing in the big
game, why not jazz up the space with
some decorations? From tablecloths
to memorabilia, some merch can go a
long way toward setting the mood. Also
consider football-themed plates and
cups. It might seem simple, but it can
help set the stage.

Panthers:
How They Got Here

Independenttribune.com

With 17 wins under their belt heading into the

Super Bowl, its not a shock that the Carolina
Panthers are representing the National Football
Conference in the big game.
Their only blemish came in a tough loss to the
Atlanta Falcons in the second-to-last week of the
National Football League regular season. But its
how they reached their franchise-record total of wins
that left many experts surprised.
Dealt a major injury to their sensational second-year
wide receiver Kelvin Benjamin during the preseason,
the Panthers offense seemingly never missed a beat.
Led by the trio of quarterback Cam Newton, running
back Jonathan Stewart and tight end Greg Olsen, the
Panthers offensive attack put on a show all season.
Newton has compiled a record-breaking season and
will likely be named the NFLs Most Valuable Player.
Olsen stepped into a leading receiver role while also
functioning as a solid run blocker, racking up 1,104
receiving yards to lead NFC tight ends.

Panthers

by the Numbers
Looking for first
championship:
Super Bowl 50 will be the teams second
trip to the big game. It lost to the Patriots
on a late-game field goal 12 years ago.
All-Star Squad:
Led by Newton, a league-high 10
Panthers were selected for the Pro Bowl.

The teams offensive output has reached new

heights in the playoffs in victories over the Seattle
Seahawks (31-24) and the Arizona Cardinals (4915). An opportunistic defense also has played a big
role in the teams offensive fireworks, especially
in the NFC championship game in which it forced
four interceptions and two fumbles by Cardinals
quarterback Carson Palmer.

Select company:
The Panthers are the fourth team to reach
the Super Bowl after wining at least 15
regular season games. The 1984 San
Francisco 49ers, 1985 Chicago Bears
and 2007 New England Patriots are the
others.

Theyll need the same kind of team effort Feb. 7

when they face off with the Denver Broncos at Levis
Stadium in Santa Clara, Calif.

Defense wins
championships:
If the old adage is true, the Panthers
should be in great shape. Their defense
forced a league-high 39 turnovers in the
regular season. They added nine more in
the playoffs.

BRONCOS:
How They Got Here

Sunday, February 7, 2016 19

Super Bowl 2016 Preview

Defense
Leading the Way

In what seems like a role reversal, Manning arguably has

played second fiddle to the Broncos dominating defense this
season. Denvers focus on rejuvenating its defense came after
the 2013 season when the Broncos then the highest-scoring
offense in team history was blown out by 35 points by the
Seattle Seahawks.
This year the Broncos finished No. 1 in total defense, pass
defense and sacks. They have been able to generate pressure
on the edges of the offensive line to make the quarterback
move off his mark. This may not be as big as an issue to Cam
Newton, considering his great agility and flexibility.

The Denver Broncos have a rich history of winning

and are making their league-high eighth Super Bowl
appearance.
Although they entered the playoffs with the American
Football Conferences No. 1 seed, this season didnt
always have a promising feel.
The Broncos bolted out to a 7-0 start at the beginning
of the season before being stunned by the Indianapolis
Colts and dominated by the Kansas City Chiefs in backto-back games. Manning threw four interceptions in the
Chiefs game before being benched for longtime backup
Brock Osweiler.
Denver also went through a rough patch in two
consecutive losses to the Oakland Raiders and
Pittsburgh Steelers, games in which Osweiler showed
signs of not being able to sustain the Broncos winning
ways. But Denver won its last two games of the season
and saw Manning return from his injury in the second half
of the seasons final game, giving the Broncos the boost
they needed heading into the playoffs.

Offensive Firepower

Manning has depended upon a wide range of receiving targets

in leading the Broncos into Super Bowl 50. The Broncos
feature a solid one-two receiving punch in Demaryius Thomas
and Emmanuel Sanders, as well as a strong duo of backfield
rushers in C.J. Anderson and Ronnie Hillman.
For the Broncos, every offensive point they could muster point
has mattered especially in the playoffs. Denver is 11-3 in
games decided by seven points or fewer, including its hardfought win over Pittsburgh in the divisional round and its tight
victory over New England in the AFC championship game.

Super Bowl 2016 Preview

Even if youve only watched TV commercials during the 2015 football season, you
would recognize this years starting Super Bowl quarterbacks. Carolinas Cam
Newton has been busy pitching yogurt while Denvers Peyton Manning has found
his singing voice with insurance commercial jingles.
Multimillion-dollar sponsorships aside, these two quarterbacks have a chance to
enhance their marketability even further with a win in Super Bowl 50. Whats even
more remarkable than their successful seasons thus far is just how different their
playing styles are.
Newton is one of the new faces of the National Football League, able to break
down defenses with both his arm and his legs. Manning is the prototypical pocket
passer with limited mobility but a proven background carving apart defenses with
accuracy and the occasional deep ball.
Differences aside, one major bond the two share are their college careers in the
Southeastern Conference (SEC). Newton (Auburn) and Manning (Tennessee)
are just the third pair of former SEC quarterbacks to start against one another in
the Super Bowl. The others were Fran Tarkenton against Ken Stabler in 1977 and
Manning against Rex Grossman 30 years later.

Cam Newton

Newton has established himself as an electrifying quarterback this season,

accounting for 45 touchdowns passing and rushing. His consistent output this
season helped him become the first player in NFL history with more than 30
passing scores and 10 rushing scores in the same season.
This double-threat potential came about into play in the NFC championship win that
lifted the Panthers into the Super Bowl, as Newton threw for two touchdowns and
ran for two more against the Arizona Cardinals.

AREAS LARGEST VARIETY OF TEAM MERCHANDISE

If Newton wins the NFL MVP award this season as many expect he will
become the first Panthers player in team history to win the award. He also would
be the first Panther to ever receive a single vote.

Peyton Manning

Known as The Sherriff, Peyton Manning isnt exactly the gunslinger quarterback
that he used to be. Injuries have slowed the 39-year-old over the past couple of
seasons, especially this season, when he missed six games with a foot injury.
Consider this juxtaposition of statistics: Manning threw for 5,477 yards and 55
touchdowns just two seasons ago against his 2,249 yards and nine touchdowns
during his abbreviated 2015 regular season. Manning also threw 17 interceptions
this season.
His performance coupled with his injury led to the ascension of backup quarterback
Brock Osweiler, who many pundits were ready to anoint the long-term starting
quarterback of the Broncos, even after Mannings injury was behind him.
The Sherriff had other ideas and is one game away from possibly riding off into the
sunset of retirement.

Fans of great defense should

be licking their chops at Super
Bowl 50. The Panthers are a
formidable unit led by a youthful
roster of quick, flashy players.
The league-leading Broncos

the ball downfield into coverage.

The difference in the game may

come down to which defense
can force the most turnovers.
History shows us that the teams
who win the turnover battle in
the Super Bowl are 36-4 alltime. This record underscores
the importance of forcing a few
interceptions and fumbles in the
big game.

The Panthers defensive unit

was no slouch this season,
paving the way for what could
be on the of the best defensive
matchups in recent Super Bowl
memory. Carolina finished the
season sixth in both yards
and points allowed. Its mark
of forcing turnovers on 19.4
percent of their opponents
drives was best in the league.

The Broncos ride the leagues

No. 1 ranked defense into the
Super Bowl behind some big
additions that were made after
the teams embarrassing Super
Bowl loss two years ago to the
Seattle Seahawks.

And theyre riding the

momentum of seven forced
turnovers in their victory over
the Cardinals in the NFC
championship game, which
tied the record for the most in
conference championship
game history.

Cornerback Aqib Talib and

linebacker DeMarcus Ware
were the teams key offseason
signings, shoring up a defense
that has evolved into a dominant
force. Once reliant on Peyton
Mannings right arm, the team
now wins and loses by the
strength of its defensive effort.

The Panthers are stout at all

three levels of defense. Kawaan
Short anchors the defensive
line, Luke Kuechly is arguably
the best linebacker in the
league, and Josh Norman has
made a living out of dominating
opposing wide receivers from
the cornerback position.

The Broncos will have their

work cut out for them against
a Panthers offense that led the
league in points scored during
the 2015 regular season. They
key may be finding a way to
shut down Panthers quarterback
Cam Newton on the ground.
Running away from pressure
is one of Newtons strengths,
but if the Broncos can keep him

All things considered,

the Panthers hope their
opportunistic defense can force
Peyton Manning into some
rushed throws and turnovers,
setting up the potent Panthers
offense for continued success.

Super Bowl 2016 Preview

The Super Bowl has a history of making stars out of little-known players
due to its spotlight and national attention. Who will wake up and run away
with this years big game?
If you look past the superstar-laden rosters comprised of Peyton Manning,
Demaryius Thomas, Cam Newton and Luke Kuechly, there are under-theradar players who are ready to make their names known.
Here are two solid options for key sleeper players for Super Bowl 50:

Corey Brown

Panthers wide receiver Corey Philly Brown has been an up-and-down

contributor all year for Carolina, catching four touchdowns during the
regular season. His presence was definitely felt in the NFC champion-ship
game, as the speedy wideout caught an 86-yard touchdown pass in the
first quarter of the Panthers win against the Arizona Cardinals.
So where did Brown come from? He was signed as an undrafted free
agent by the Panthers in 2014 after a successful college football stint at
The Ohio State University. It was there that coach Jim Tressell coined the
nickname Philly because there was another Corey Brown on the roster,
and Brown originally is from Philadelphia.
Brown shares the ball with fellow Ohio State alum Ted Ginn, Jr., and
could find success as a third option for Newton against a tough Broncos
secondary. Newton has been patient with the ball all season and may find
Brown open as he runs through his progressions of Ginn, Jr., and tight end
Greg Olsen.

Owen Daniels

Owen Daniels was the star of Denvers win over the New England Patriots
in the AFC title game. He caught touchdown passes of 21 and 12 yards
from Manning to give the Broncos their early lead.

Daniels has made headlines for following coach Gary Kubiak around the
league, playing for the coach in Houston, Baltimore and now Denver. He
has been a consistent pass-catcher for the Broncos as they have struggled
to find any consistency as an offense.
His solid route-running and dependable hands make him a great option
against a blitz-happy Panthers defense. Carolina will surely bring plenty
of pressure in the middle to impact Mannings throwing game, so a safety
outlet like Daniels could be the key to victory for the Broncos.

Super Bowl 2016 Preview

Peyton Mannings story in Denver has

many of the same qualities as another
famous quarterback who once played in the
Mile High City.

Broncos fans remember the feeling of

elation as they watched John Elway win two
Super Bowls in the waning seasons of his
National Football League career.
Manning is now at a crossroads, strongly
considering retirement at the end of the
season. Elway is now the general manager
and executive vice president of football
operations for the Broncos. And much
like Elway, Manning is trying to secure his

second Super Bowl title in potentially his

last campaign.
The Panthers, on the other hand, do not
have a rich Super Bowl history from which
to draw experience. In fact, during Elways
late-career heroics, Carolina was still in
its infancy as a franchise. The Panthers
are making their second Super Bowl
appearance, hoping for a happier ending
than what they experienced their last time
around.
Here is a look back at the two teams and
their Super Bowl histories:

Independenttribune.com

The Broncos

Super Bowl 50 will mark Denvers

eighth appearance in the big game. To
understand how much the franchise
appreciates its two wins, we first must
review its five previous losses. The
Broncos fell in the 1977 season to the
Dallas Cowboys, the 1986 season to
the New York Giants, the 1987 season
to the Washington Redskins, the 1989
season to the San Francisco 49ers
and the 2013 season to the Seattle
Seahawks.
A few of those games ended in
heartbreaking fashion, while the most
recent was a runway win by Seattle.
It was the late 1990s that Elway and
his strong running attack were able to
capture two Super Bowl titles. They beat
the Green Bay Packers at the end of the
1997 season, 31-24, in San Diego. The
Broncos followed up the win by blowing
out the Atlanta Falcons, 34-19, the
following season in Miami. At 38 years
old, Elway became the oldest player
ever to be named Super Bowl MVP.

Carolina
Panthers

Announced as an expansion team in

1993 and beginning play in 1995, the
Panthers do not boast as successful
a Super Bowl history as the Broncos.
In fact, Carolinas lone showing in the
big game came at the end of the 2003
season in Houston.
In that game considered by many
as the greatest Super Bowl of all time
the New England Patriots beat the
Panthers, 32-29, on a game-winning
field-goal with only four seconds left
to play.
The game was scoreless for a Super
Bowl record 26:55 before the two
teams exploded in points.
Its worth noting that the 2003 Super
Bowl also is known for what happened
during the halftime show, as the
controversial wardrobe malfunction
involving Janet Jackson and Justin
Timberlake went down in infamy.

COACHES

26 Sunday, February 7, 2016

Super Bowl 50 features a pair of

superstar quarterbacks and stalwart
defenses. Not to be overshadowed are
a couple of coaches with long histories
in the league pursuing their first headcoaching championships.

Gary Kubiak (Broncos) and Ron Rivera

(Panthers) have a lot in common.
Both are former NFL players and have
contributed to Super Bowl victories.
Both also are highly respected by their
players and front offices and will likely
remain in their current posts for the
foreseeable future.
Their philosophies on coaching are
where the coaches begin to differ.
Kubiak is more of an offensive coach,
known for getting great play out of his
quarterbacks, while Rivera is considered
a defensive mastermind of sorts for his
blitzes and coverage packages.
Lets take a closer look at how each
coach has reached this point in his
career and how their experience could
make the difference in Super Bowl 50.

Gary Kubiak

Kubiak is in his first year as head coach

of the Broncos. The former quarterback
actually backed up current Denver
executive John Elway from 1983 to
1991.
A few years after his retirement,
Kubiak made his NFL coaching debut
as quarterbacks coach with the San
Francisco 49ers, helping lead the team
to a Super Bowl victory. He then worked

Ron Rivera

as the quarterbacks coach and offensive

coordinator for the Broncos from 1995
to 2002, including their two Super Bowl
wins with Elway at the helm.
Kubiak then spent eight years as head
coach of the Houston Texans before
being fired and moving on as offensive
coordinator of the Baltimore Ravens. His
coaching style is offense-heavy, proven
by his ability to develop and groom
superstar-caliber quarterbacks and
running backs.

Ron Rivera

It was 30 years ago that Rivera was part

of one of the most popular Super Bowlwinning teams in league his-tory, the 85
Chicago Bears.
Rivera is in his fifth season as the
Panthers head coach. After spending
time as an assistant coach with
the Chicago Bears and San Diego
Chargers, Rivera was given his
first chance as head coach with the
Panthers. The move has seemed to pay
off as Carolina has won three straight
division titles and exploded to a 15-1
regular season record this year.
Rivera is recognized throughout the
league as a defensive mind tracing back
to his days as a backup line-backer for
the Bears, one of the most dominant
defenses in NFL history.
He has consistently positioned the
Panthers as a defense-focused team,
and the offense has finally caught up to
its level of dominance.
