previously,notonethathasagreatdealofimportanceinthepracticeof
medicine.However,agingandidentifyinglivingsubjectscanbeimportantin
certainlegalandotherscenarios.Suchscenariosareaddressedbymultiple
fieldsofforensicscience,butarguablythemostrelevantherewouldbeforensic
anthropology,forensicodontology,forensicpathology,andforensicpediatric
medicine.Caseswhichdemandtheassessmentofalivingperson'sageinclude:
suspectedcriminalswithnoreliablerecordsofidentification,whereverifying
ageisessentialfordetermininglegaland/orfinancialresponsibilityadults
fromdevelopingnationswithnoreliable,certifieddocumentswho,for
instance,needtoknowtheirageinordertorequestagecontingentpensions
andotherbenefitsfinally,theproblemofagingchildrenfromphotographic

primarytechniquesforageestimationinthelivingconsiderradiographic
analysisofthecarpalbonesandevaluationofdentaldevelopment,
mineralization,andocclusalsurfacewearthroughclinicalexaminationor
evaluationofdentalplainfilms.Currentresearchhasalsoexploredtheuseof
facialproportionanalysisasanageindicatorofphotographicimages.
Obviously,thereareproblemswithattemptingtodetermineagethrough
skeletalanddentalanalysis,asbiologicalagedoesnotalwayscorrespondto
chronological(legal)age.Furthermore,noagingtechniqueisfaultlessandthe
marginoferrorforanyonemethodcanbebeasmuchas+/23yearsand,at
best,+/12months.Thus,allavailableevidenceshouldbeexaminedand

includesaskingthemtheirage,soyes.Aphysicianwhowantstobepaidfor
his/herworkalsotendstogetallofapatient'sdemographicinformationfor
reportingtoinsurancecompaniesaswell.:)
Inallseriousness,though,Idon'tknowofanyexam/testthataccurately
determinessomeone'sage.
Theproblemisthatpeople"age"atdifferentrates.Whileaperson
maybe,say,32yearsold,theymaybiologicallyhavebeenthroughconsiderably
more/lesswearandtear(and/orhavedifferentresiliencedueto
genetics/environment/etc).

Irecentlyhadapatientinclinicwholiterallylooked~3decadesolderthan
theirageduetoarathercomplicatedmedicalhistorythatinvolved,toputit
mildly,agreatdealofphysicalduress.Similarly,I'vealsoseenpatientswho
wereintheir90swhodidn'tseemadaypast65.
AFAIK,thereisnotagreatneedtoaccuratelydeterminesomeone'sagefor
medicalpurposeseither,makingthedevelopmentofsuchanexam/testmoot.
Therearesomefairlybroadagerangesthathelpnarrowdifferentialdiagnosis,
buteventhoseareusuallyconfirmedwithothertests.
