originatedinJapan,wasnotpractisedinJapananymore.
WhenpeoplecametoJapanandvisitedplacessuchasMr.
UsuisgraveandMt.Kurama,whereMr.Usuididhisascetic
training[founderofthehealingmethod,GS],theynevermet
anyonewhoactuallypractisedReikiaspartofdailylife.
ThenaJapanesepersonwhohadlearnedtheWesterntypeof
ReikiandbecomeaReikimasterdiscoveredsomeonewho
hadbeenpractisingtheoriginalformofReikiforoversixty
years.TheReikimasterannouncedtheirdiscoverytothe

TY:No,therewereothers.Oneofherelderbrothers,whowas
closesttoherage,andhersisterwhowassevenyearsolder
thanmymother,theywerebothkeenpractitioners.AlsoMr.
andMrs.WasaburoSugano,whorecommendedReikitomy
mother,practisedReikimorethananyone.Myfather
pracitisedaswell.Myfathersmotherwasthesisterof
Wasaburoswife.TheSuganostaughtReikitomyfathers
sideofthefamily.Tobeprecise,Wasaburoswife,whowas
fromtheYamaguchifamily,taughttheYamaguchis.Itwasnt
ChujiroHayashiwhotaughtmyfathersside.Somanypeople
practisedReikiinthosedays.Theyeventuallystoppedas
theygrewolder.
Oftenpeoplearemistakenthatmymotheristhesole
practitioneroftheoriginalReikibutthatisnotthecase.Its
truethatmymotherhadpractisedReikiforoversixtyyears
withoutbeingrecognisedbutsohadhersiblingsshehad
manysiblingsandherrelatives.TheyallpractisedReiki.
Ihaveaboutfortycousinsand80%ofthemlearnedReiki
fromtheirparents.TheyallpractisedReikiuntiltheygrewold.
Thesepractitionerswerenotrecognisedbecausetheywere
usingReikiasahomeremedyonly,notforbusinessuse.
ThisiswhythepractitionersoftheoriginalReikiwerenot
knowntotherestoftheworld.

Also,afterthewarthingsdevelopedandmanynewthings
wereavailable,includingnewlydevelopedmedicine.
Traditionalhealingmethods,suchaswhatwearedoing,were
considerednonscientificmethodsinpeoplesminds.Oldand
traditionalmethodsweretreatedassomethingnonscientific.
Thatwasthemindsetinthosedays.
Reikiasahouseholdremedy
GS:WhatsortofconditionscanbetreatedwithReiki?
TY:Basically,youcantreatanyconditionwithReiki.Tobe
morespecific,ifyouuseReikiathome,youcantreatcuts
andbruisesforexample.WhenIwasachildIusedtooften
getcoldsandalsoIatetoomuch.Conditionslikethat,that
everychildhascanbetreatedwithReiki.Mymothertreated
themallwithReikiandshemadeusbetter.Reikiisthebest
thingyoucouldhaveashomemedicine.
WhenIwasalittleolder,maybearoundfifteenyearsold,
peoplestartedcomingtoseemymothertobetreatedfor
variousailments.Isawthemgettingbetter.
Reikifortreatingjaundice
GS:YourmotherusedReikiforsixtyfiveyears,moreorless
everydayofherlife.Canyougivemeexamplesofconditions
thatshesuccessfullytreated?
TY:Therearesomany.Itsdifficulttopickone.Iwonder
whichonewouldbeagoodexample.Well,onememorable
casewassomeonewithaliverproblem.Thispersonhad
jaundice.Doyouknowjaundice?Youreyesgoyellow.Your
liverusuallyfiltersoutbile,whichisunnecessaryliquid.When
theliverisworkingwell,thebileisremovedfromthebody,but
sometimestheliverdoesnotfunctionwellandthebileisnot
removed.Whenthebilestaysinyourbody,thebody,face
andevenyoureyesbecomeyellow.Inthosedaysitwasa
seriousproblem.Thedoctorsaidtothispersontherewas
nothingtheycoulddotohelpandtheonlythingthepatient
coulddowasrest.Hewasoneofourdistantrelatives.Somy
mothersaidtohimthathecouldstayatourhouseforawhile
andshewouldtreathimeveryday.Insteadofcharginghim,
shesaidhecouldjustlookafterthechildrenandmaybeclean
thehouse.Heprobablystayedatourhouseforamonth.In
theendherecoveredcompletely.

TY:Therewasacancercasetoo.Itwasabouttenyears
ago.Someonewhowasdiagnosedwithpancreaticcancer.
AfterthreemonthsofReikitreatmentthispatientrecovered.
Hewasinhislatetwentiesatthetimeandrecovered
completely.Itsbeenovertenyearssincethenbutheiswell.
Thecancerhasnotcomebacktothisday.
GS:Didhehaveanyothertherapiestohelphiscanceratthe
sametimelikechemotherapy?
TY:Healwayspreferrednaturaltreatment.Hiswishwasto
usenaturopathicmethodstotreathiscancer.Atthe
beginning,hefeltachesinhislowerback.Hedidntwanttogo
tothedoctor,buthisbackachewasgettingverybadandhe
wasbecomingunwellsohehadtogointheend.Hedidnt
knowwhatwascausingtheproblem.Afterbeingexaminedhe
wastolditwaspancreaticcancer.Thedoctorsuggestedhe
useanticancerdrugs.Atthattime,fortunately,thecancerhad
notspreadanywhereotherthanthepancreas.Sothedoctor
saidanticancerdrugswouldbesufficientforhiscase.Buthe
didntwanttouseanticancerdrugs.Someonethenintroduced
himtomymotherandhetrustedher.Hecametoourhouse
everydaytoreceivetreatment.Afterthreemonthshewas
completelyclearofcancer.Atthetimemymotherhadan
assistant.Sometimesbothmymotherandherassistant
treatedapersontogether.Sometimeseventhreetreateda
personatonetime.Ihelpedthemaswell.

andtheyallgotbetter.AsIamaman,andthoseladieshad
breastcancer,Inormallyputmyhandsontheirheadwhilemy
mothertreatedthebreastarea.Mymotheralsoattracted
femalepatientsbecausetheyarethesamegender.For
example,ladieswithuterusmyomaorendometriosis.
Endometriosisseemslikeaverypainfulcondition.These
conditionsalsogotmuchbetterwithmymotherstreatments.

wethoughtofJikiden,whichmeansChiyokoYamaguchi,my
mother,learnedReikidirectlyfromChujiroHayashi.Jikidenis
alsoeasytosay.Jikidenmeansthatmymotherlearned
directlyfromMr.Hayashi.Sowethoughtthatthatwasvery
appropriate.WhenJapanesepeoplehearthewordJikiden

havealltheNewAgeaddonsandwereverysimple,asIfirstlearnedReikifroma

time,thepracticehaschangedintosomethingthatsometimesbearsverylittleor
noresemblancewiththeoriginalpractice.(Webothknowthis).
Partlythisisperhapsduetoculturaldifferences:weliketoexperimentandputour
ownstamponthings.ThereseemsnorealequivalentintheWesttotheattitudeof
respecttowardstheteachingsonewasgiven,whichissodeeplyingrainedin
Japanesetraditionalculture.Thisattitudeiswhatthetermjikidenrefersto,and
