I. LEARNING COMPETENCY:
At the end of the lesson learners are expected to:
Relate impulse and momentum to collision of objects
Code: S9FE-IVb-36
II. SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES
1. Define momentum.
2. State relationship of momentum to mass and velocity.
3. Calculate the momentum of an object.
III. CONTENT AND MATERIALS
A. TOPIC: MOMENTUM
B. Materials:
Toy car, loads, meter stick, books, activity sheets, Manila paper, marker and pens
C. Science Concepts:
Momentum refers to the quantity of motion that an object has

In physics, the symbol for the quantity momentum is lower case p.

Thus, the above equation can be rewrite as
p = mv
where m is the mass and v is the velocity. The equation illustrates that
momentum is directly proportional to an objects mass and directly
proportional to the objects velocity.
The IS unit for momentum is kg.m/s.

Sample problem #1:

A bowling whose mass is 4.0 kg is rolling at a rate of 2.5 m/s. What is
its momentum?
Given: m =4.0 kg
v = 2.5 m/s
p=?
Solution: p = mv
P = 4.0kg(2.5m/s)
P = 10 kg-m/s
Sample problem #2:
A skateboard is rolling at a velocity of 3.0m/s with a momentum of 6.0
kg.m/s. What is it mass?
Given: v = 3.0 m/s

p = 6.0 kg m/s
m =?
Solution m =p/v
m = (6.0kg-m/s)/ (3.0m/s)
m = 2.0 kg
Sample problem #3:
A pitcher throws a baseball with a mass of 0.5 kg and the momentum of
10 kg-m/s. What is the velocity?
Given: m = 0.5 kg
p =10 kg-m/s
v=?
Solution: v = p/m

B. Motivation: ROLL THAT BALL
Roll a ball and ask student what they observe. Lead them to the answer change of
motion or velocity and raise the question What is the term we use that describes the
change of Velocity per unit of time? Answer: Acceleration
C. LESSON PROPER:
Concept introduction: Before we talk about acceleration, we need to
understand velocity which is the rate that an object moves from one place to another.
Velocity is a vector quantity, which means it has both a magnitude, called speed, and
a direction.
If I were in my car traveling 30 miles per hour to the north, the magnitude of my
velocity, or speed, would be 30 miles per hour and my direction would be north. If I
changed my speed or if I changed my direction, then I would experience a change in
my velocity. This is where acceleration comes into play.
Example Problem
Determine the acceleration of a coaster which moves with a velocity of 10 m/s, after
2s its velocity is increases to 26 m/s.

1. Pre-Activity
Ask the student to go to their respective group
Give instruction
Give each group one marker and size manila paper
2. Activity proper: FILL THE TABLE
The purpose of this activity is to measure the momentum of an object with
different mass varying loads
Procedure:
I. Place the book in flat surface along the horizontal then put the meter stick at the
center of it.
2. Mark a start and end mark at the meter stick.
3. Put the loads at the top of the car using rubber bands.
4. Position the small toy car at the starting line of the meter stick and record the time it
takes for the toy car to move down.
5. Repeat the process re and change the metal loads to be used in the experiment.
6. Complete the information in the data table below:

3. Analysis (Post-activity)
Give each group 3 minutes to present their output.
Instruct every student to observe the similarities and differences of each group.
Guide Questions
QI: Which set has the highest amount of momentum?
Q2: Which set has the lowest amount of momentum?
Q3: What are the factors that affect the momentum of an object?
Q4: How can mass affects the momentum of an object?
Q5: How velocity affects the momentum of an object?
4. Application
The teacher will ask the class to answer the following problems in their notebook
5 minutes:
12-kg bicycle has a momentum of 24 kgm/s.
What momentum would the bicycle have ad
a. twice the mass and was moving at the same speed'
