What Is the Responsibility of a Bank Teller?

Your job responsibilities as a bank teller may vary depending on the bank you work for and how long you
have been working as a teller. Because you may be the first person customers see when they enter a bank,
having strong communication and customer service abilities can help you succeed as a bank teller
Process Transactions
Bank tellers process customer transactions. For example, they cash checks and money orders, process
deposits into customer accounts and order checks for customers. They also are responsible for checking
customers' identification to verify that customers are who they say they are, and that they have authority
to access certain accounts.
Answer Inquiries
When customers telephone banks, tellers may be responsible for researching customers account
information and providing answers to their questions. For example, bank tellers generally let customers
know their account balances, and when recently deposited checks and money orders will clear their
account for withdrawal. At some banks, tellers may also answer customers questions about different
types of accounts available at the bank.
Supervise Staff
If they work as head tellers, bank tellers supervise other workers. For example, they might set work
schedules, train new tellers and approve tellers' vacation requests. Additionally, should customers have
complaints about a banks services or the processing of a transaction, head tellers might work with
customers to resolve the issues.
Balance Teller Drawer
At the end of the business day, tellers count money in their drawers and ensure that the money balances
against money they started the day with and transactions they processed for customers during the day. If
their drawers do not balance, tellers may work overtime re-calculating transactions and the cash in their
drawers until their drawers balance.
Considerations
Employers generally require bank tellers to have at least a high school diploma, according to the U.S.
Department of Labors Bureau of Labor Statistics. The BLS also reports that the median annual wage
bank tellers earned as of May 2011 was $24,590. Furthermore, bank teller jobs are expected to grow by
approximately 1 percent from 2010 through 2020. Part of the lack of growth may be because more banks
are using automated teller machines and more customers are conducting their banking online.
