前言
我在二零零二年就开始建立英语成语的数据库. 当时是因为长期以来所知道的成语及俚语
都记在脑海里, 完全没有一套有系统的整理; 所以突发奇想要做出一套有系统的成语及俚
语参考数据库来供自己使用, 仅此而已. 随着工作一天天的进展, 我发现有许多由 phrases,
词组作骨干所组成的成语或俚语, 因此不得不将词组也罗致进来以保持数据库的完整性. 仔
细地想想, 其实许多的词组也因为经常被使用也可被美国人列入成语或俚语. 一旦开始作大
幅度的搜集就把原有的时间从一年, 两年的工作时间表, 欲罢不能地变成八年; 而原先要自
己参考的数据也就变成想要与读者共享的电子书.
另外一个造成我决定要建立全面性数据库的推动力就是越来越多的证据显示出英语文已经
成为经济全球化不可或缺的世界性语文. 不论制造业或服务业, 沿袭过去传统的简陋英语文
能力将无法再继续接受得起挑战. 君不见每年一批接一批的人们到英语国家去游学以增强
自己英语文实力, 君不见每年一批接一批的海外年青华人回台湾或回大陆找工作. 经济全球
化不止造成全球产品/服务市场的竞争, 也造成全球职业市场的竞争. 换句话说, 在求职时,
谁的英语文能力强, 谁的被录取希望就会更大. 但是, 读者不要着急, 在前言之后, 我已附上”
我的学习英语文窍门”一篇文章, 把学习英语文的正确方向, 态度与细节跟您详细解说. 希望
您能充分利用我的诚恳建议与由经验总结出来的学习英语文路线图.
我先简短地解释俚语与成语之差异如下. 有一派认为俚语是一个时间或一个区域的流行用
语, 如经得起时间的考验, 受到越来越多的使用则变为成语. 另一派认为成语比较正式而俚
语较通俗或上不了台面. 我感觉这两派的定义都可接受. 另一定义必须强调的是有些简单的
词组例如 fed up, tied up 等也属成语, 也就是说成语不论长短, 凡是约定俗成的, 脱口而出即
能成为文章的皆为成语. 此定义与中国成语有很大相似之处.
我之所以要编汇成语与俚语之初衷是因为我已经在美国生活至今已经超过三十年, 平常工
作, 甚至休闲, 大多跟美国人往来, 在言谈中很少碰到生字但却碰到大量的成语与俚语. 你会
奇怪为什么美国人在言谈中很少使用生涩的单字而却使用大量的成语与俚语? 其实不止美
国, 甚至许多国家或地方的人们把言谈跟写作分开. 也就是说, 平常的言谈趋于口语化, 没有
什么理由正经八百地以官样语言来话家常. 当然, 在正式场合, 例如国家庆典时, 高级官员或
领导人的演讲自然会引经据典地使用生涩的单字来突显其庄严隆重的气氛. 在平常的留言

举的两个例子里, 你可以知道你在潜意识里所学到的”句型”早已牢牢地刻印在你的脑海中,
你的英语”讲”与”听”已变成你的直觉反应. 如果你停下来思考一下你所使用的最习惯语言
(母语)也是面临同一个情形, 你就会了解我所说的经验.
让我们总结学习英语文的路线图:
结束之前, 我要跟所有对学习英语文有兴趣的朋友说几句话:
1. 拿掉自暴自弃的宿命心态. 别认定自己不是读英文的料子就干脆放弃研读英文的大
好机会. 以我为例, 我刚来美国时, 我的英文也不是很好, 常被老美纠正(老美很少讥
笑人, 如果交情够的话, 他们会纠正你). 我随后下定决心要加强英语文, 几年之后他
们惊讶地说我的英文跟本地人相差无几. 在此, 我愿意分享我的心态改变要诀, 也就
是我曾常听到一句话: “某某人是很利害, 但他也是人, 他也是一条腿接一条腿的穿裤
子, He also puts on his pants one leg at a time”. 这句话给我的启示是, 别人也是跟你一
样的凡人, 他能做得到的事情, 你也能做得到(虽然英语不是你的母语).
2. 这个学习过程也许是长期的, 所以越放轻松地学习越有滋味, 越持久, 越珍惜. 虽然在
前面我曾提到没有一夕之间可以成功的秘诀妙方, 但你的进展仍是一步接一步的成
长. 有时成长的幅度不大, 也有时会大幅度冲刺. 毕竟学海无涯, 有些人只要达到”读,
写, 听, 讲”四项能力无碍就好, 也有些人要求自己英语文程度与英美人士一争高下.
这些目标全凭你自己去设定.
3. 你可以使用计算机软件像微软 Word 所提供的 spell-checker 拼字检查程序以及文法
检查程序来帮助你的英文写作.
4. 常用 google.com 或其它搜寻引擎来调查你所写下的句子一部分, 看看有没有大量地
也被别人使用或者有没有更好的写法. 我常用这种方式来抛砖引玉(钓鱼), 经常取得
意想不到的惊人收获.
5. 当你遇到困难时, 你可以上网寻找答案, 有几个网站你可以发问题(例如: “雅虎知识
堂”, “百度知道”等等专门回答英语文问题的网站).
6. 当你可以开始以纯英文来搜寻相关知识时, 你的视野将暴增十倍有余.
7. 当你可以开始以英文在网站发表你的意见或文章, 你的学习速度将加速十倍有余.
8. 以上两项都不是不可达到的目标; 与其死抱着英文学习书本, 不如实际生活在英语
文世界.
