前言
我在二零零二年就開始建立英語成語的資料庫. 當時是因為長期以來所知道的成語及俚語
都記在腦海裡, 完全沒有一套有系統的整理; 所以突發奇想要做出一套有系統的成語及俚
語參考資料庫來供自己使用, 僅此而已. 隨著工作一天天的進展, 我發現有許多由 phrases,
片語作骨幹所組成的成語或俚語, 因此不得不將片語也羅致進來以保持資料庫的完整性. 仔
細地想想, 其實許多的片語也因為經常被使用也可被美國人列入成語或俚語. 一旦開始作大
幅度的蒐集就把原有的時間從一年, 兩年的工作時間表, 欲罷不能地變成八年; 而原先要自
己參考的資料也就變成想要與讀者共享的電子書.
另外一個造成我決定要建立全面性資料庫的推動力就是越來越多的證據顯示出英語文已經
成為經濟全球化不可或缺的世界性語文. 不論製造業或服務業, 沿襲過去傳統的簡陋英語文
能力將無法再繼續接受得起挑戰. 君不見每年一批接一批的人們到英語國家去遊學以增強
自己英語文實力, 君不見每年一批接一批的海外年青華人回台灣或回大陸找工作. 經濟全球
化不止造成全球產品/服務市場的競爭, 也造成全球職業市場的競爭. 換句話說, 在求職時,
誰的英語文能力強, 誰的被錄取希望就會更大. 但是, 讀者不要著急, 在前言之後, 我已附上”
我的學習英語文竅門”一篇文章, 把學習英語文的正確方向, 態度與細節跟您詳細解說. 希望
您能充分利用我的誠懇建議與由經驗總結出來的學習英語文路線圖.
我先簡短地解釋俚語與成語之差異如下. 有一派認為俚語是一個時間或一個區域的流行用
語, 如經得起時間的考驗, 受到越來越多的使用則變為成語. 另一派認為成語比較正式而俚
語較通俗或上不了檯面. 我感覺這兩派的定義都可接受. 另一定義必須強調的是有些簡單的
片語例如 fed up, tied up 等也屬成語, 也就是說成語不論長短, 凡是約定俗成的, 脫口而出即
能成為文章的皆為成語. 此定義與中國成語有很大相似之處.
我之所以要編彙成語與俚語之初衷是因為我已經在美國生活至今已經超過三十年, 平常工
作, 甚至休閒, 大多跟美國人往來, 在言談中很少碰到生字但卻碰到大量的成語與俚語. 你會
奇怪為什麼美國人在言談中很少使用生澀的單字而卻使用大量的成語與俚語? 其實不止美
國, 甚至許多國家或地方的人們把言談跟寫作分開. 也就是說, 平常的言談趨於口語化, 沒有
什麼理由正經八百地以官樣語言來話家常. 當然, 在正式場合, 例如國家慶典時, 高級官員或
領導人的演講自然會引經據典地使用生澀的單字來突顯其莊嚴隆重的氣氛. 在平常的留言

這本書基本上是你的參考書, 我也希望你有空時可以每天抽出一些時間一點點地閱讀, 最好

你的英語”講”與”聽”已變成你的直覺反應. 如果你停下來思考一下你所使用的最習慣語言
(母語)也是面臨同一個情形, 你就會瞭解我所說的經驗.
讓我們總結學習英語文的路線圖:
結束之前, 我要跟所有對學習英語文有興趣的朋友說幾句話:
1. 拿掉自暴自棄的宿命心態. 別認定自己不是讀英文的料子就乾脆放棄研讀英文的大
好機會. 以我為例, 我剛來美國時, 我的英文也不是很好, 常被老美糾正(老美很少譏
笑人, 如果交情夠的話, 他們會糾正你). 我隨後下定決心要加強英語文, 幾年之後他
們驚訝地說我的英文跟本地人相差無幾. 在此, 我願意分享我的心態改變要訣, 也就
是我曾常聽到一句話: “某某人是很利害, 但他也是人, 他也是一條腿接一條腿的穿褲
子, He also puts on his pants one leg at a time”. 這句話給我的啟示是, 別人也是跟你一
樣的凡人, 他能做得到的事情, 你也能做得到(雖然英語不是你的母語).
2. 這個學習過程也許是長期的, 所以越放輕鬆地學習越有滋味, 越持久, 越珍惜. 雖然在
前面我曾提到沒有一夕之間可以成功的秘訣妙方, 但你的進展仍是一步接一步的成
長. 有時成長的幅度不大, 也有時會大幅度衝刺. 畢竟學海無涯, 有些人只要達到”讀,
寫, 聽, 講”四項能力無礙就好, 也有些人要求自己英語文程度與英美人士一爭高下.
這些目標全憑你自己去設定.
3. 你可以使用電腦軟體/軟件像微軟 Word 所提供的 spell-checker 拼字檢查程式以及文
法檢查程式來幫助你的英文寫作.
4. 常用 google.com 或其他搜尋引擎來調查你所寫下的句子一部分, 看看有沒有大量地
也被別人使用或者有沒有更好的寫法. 我常用這種方式來拋磚引玉(釣魚), 經常取得
意想不到的驚人收穫.
5. 當你遇到困難時, 你可以上網尋找答案, 有幾個網站你可以發問題(例如: “雅虎知識
堂”, “百度知道”等等專門回答英語文問題的網站).
6. 當你可以開始以純英文來搜尋相關知識時, 你的視野將暴增十倍有餘.
7. 當你可以開始以英文在網站發表你的意見或文章, 你的學習速度將加速十倍有餘.
8. 以上兩項都不是不可達到的目標; 與其死抱著英文學習書本, 不如實際生活在英語
文世界.
