(Genesis 11:1-9)
11:1 Now the whole earth had
one language and the same
words.2 And as people migrated
from the east, they found a plain in
the land of Shinar and settled
there. 3 And they said to one
another, Come, let us make bricks,
and burn them thoroughly. And
they had brick for stone, and
bitumen for mortar. 4 Then they
said, Come, let us build ourselves
a city and a tower with its top in
the heavens, and let us make a
name for ourselves, lest we be
dispersed over the face of the
whole earth. 5 And theLORD came
down to see the city and the tower,
which the children of man had
built. 6 And the LORD said, Behold,
they are one people, and they have
all one language, and this is only
the beginning of what they will do.
And nothing that they propose to
do will now be impossible for
them. 7 Come, let us go down and
there confuse their language, so
that they may not understand one
another's
speech. 8 So
the LORD dispersed
them
from
there over the face of all the earth,
and they left off building the
city. 9 Therefore its name was
called
Babel,
because
there
the LORD confused the language of
all the earth. And from there
the LORD dispersed them over the
face of all the earth.
17:1 Now
the
Philistines
gathered their armies for battle.
And they were gathered at Socoh,
which belongs to Judah, and
encamped between Socoh and
Azekah, in Ephes-dammim. 2 And
Saul and the men of Israel were
gathered, and encamped in the
Valley of Elah, and drew up in line
of
battle
against
the
Philistines. 3 And the Philistines
stood on the mountain on the one
side, and Israel stood on the
mountain on the other side, with a
valley between them. 4 And there
came out from the camp of the
Philistines a champion named
Goliath of Gath, whose height was
six cubits and a span.5 He had a
helmet of bronze on his head, and
he was armed with a coat of mail,
and the weight of the coat was five
thousand shekels of bronze. 6 And
he had bronze armor on his legs,
and a javelin of bronze slung
between his shoulders. 7 The shaft
of his spear was like a weaver's
beam, and his spear's head
weighed six hundred shekels of
iron. And his shield-bearer went
before him. 8 He stood and shouted
to the ranks of Israel, Why have
you come out to draw up for
battle? Am I not a Philistine, and
are you not servants of Saul?
Choose a man for yourselves, and
let him come down to me. 9 If he is
able to fight with me and kill me,
then we will be your servants. But
if I prevail against him and kill him,
then you shall be our servants and
serve us.10 And the Philistine said,
I defy the ranks of Israel this day.
Give me a man, that we may fight
now?
Was
it
not
but
a
word? 30 And he turned away from
him toward another, and spoke in
the same way, and the people
answered him again as before.
31 When the words that David
spoke were heard, they repeated
them before Saul, and he sent for
him. 32 And David said to Saul, Let
no man's heart fail because of him.
Your servant will go and fight with
this Philistine.33 And Saul said to
David, You are not able to go
against this Philistine to fight with
him, for you are but a youth, and
he has been a man of war from his
youth. 34 But David said to Saul,
Your servant used to keep sheep
for his father. And when there
came a lion, or a bear, and took a
lamb from the flock, 35 I went after
him and struck him and delivered it
out of his mouth. And if he arose
against me, I caught him by his
beard and struck him and killed
him. 36 Your servant has struck
down both lions and bears, and this
uncircumcised Philistine shall be
like one of them, for he has defied
the
armies
of
the
living
God. 37 And
David
said,
The LORD who delivered me from
the paw of the lion and from the
paw of the bear will deliver me
from the hand of this Philistine.
And Saul said to David, Go, and
the LORD be with you!
38 Then Saul clothed David with
his armor. He put a helmet of
bronze on his head and clothed him
with a coat of mail, 39 and David
strapped his sword over his armor.
And he tried in vain to go, for he
had not tested them. Then David
Solomon's Wisdom
(1 Kings 3:1-28)
3:1 Solomon made a marriage
alliance with Pharaoh king of Egypt.
He took Pharaoh's daughter and
brought her into the city of David
until he had finished building his
own house and the house of
the LORD and the wall around
Jerusalem. 2 The
people
were
sacrificing at the high places,
however, because no house had
yet been built for the name of
the LORD.
3 Solomon
loved
the LORD,
walking in the statutes of David his
father, only he sacrificed and made
offerings at the high places. 4 And
the king went to Gibeon to sacrifice
there, for that was the great high
place. Solomon used to offer a
Chariot of Fire
(2 Kings 1:1-2:25)
1:1 After the death of Ahab,
Moab rebelled against Israel.
2 Now Ahaziah fell through the
lattice in his upper chamber in
Samaria, and lay sick; so he sent
messengers, telling them, Go,
inquire of Baal-zebub, the god of
Ekron, whether I shall recover from
this sickness. 3 But the angel of
the LORD said to Elijah the Tishbite,
Arise, go up to meet the
messengers of the king of Samaria,
king's
order,
Come
down
quickly! 12 But Elijah answered
them, If I am a man of God, let fire
come down from heaven and
consume you and your fifty. Then
the fire of God came down from
heaven and consumed him and his
fifty.
13 Again the king sent the
captain of a third fifty with his fifty.
And the third captain of fifty went
up and came and fell on his knees
before Elijah and entreated him, O
man of God, please let my life, and
the life of these fifty servants of
yours,
be
precious
in
your
sight. 14 Behold, fire came down
from heaven and consumed the
two former captains of fifty men
with their fifties, but now let my life
be precious in your sight. 15 Then
the angel of the LORD said to Elijah,
Go down with him; do not be
afraid of him. So he arose and
went down with him to the
king 16 and said to him, Thus says
the LORD, Because you have sent
messengers to inquire of Baalzebub, the god of Ekronis it
because there is no God in Israel to
inquire of his word?therefore you
shall not come down from the bed
to which you have gone up, but
you shall surely die.
17 So he died according to the
word of the LORD that Elijah had
spoken. Jehoram became king in
his place in the second year of
Jehoram the son of Jehoshaphat,
king of Judah, because Ahaziah had
no son. 18 Now the rest of the acts
of Ahaziah that he did, are they not
written in the Book of the
Chronicles of the Kings of Israel?
Ezekiel's Vision
(Ezekiel 37:1-14)
37:1 The hand of the LORD was
upon me, and he brought me out in
the Spirit of the LORD and set me
down in the middle of the valley; it
was full of bones. 2 And he led me
around among them, and behold,
there were very many on the
surface of the valley, and behold,
they were very dry. 3 And he said to
me, Son of man, can these bones
live? And I answered, O Lord GOD,
you know. 4 Then he said to me,
Prophesy over these bones, and
say to them, O dry bones, hear the
word of the LORD. 5 Thus says the
Lord GOD to these bones: Behold, I
will cause breath to enter you, and
you shall live.6 And I will lay sinews
upon you, and will cause flesh to
come upon you, and cover you with
skin, and put breath in you, and
you shall live, and you shall know
that I am the LORD.
7 So I prophesied as I was
commanded. And as I prophesied,
there was a sound, and behold, a
rattling, and the bones came
together, bone to its bone. 8 And I
looked, and behold, there were
sinews on them, and flesh had
come upon them, and skin had
covered them. But there was no
breath in them. 9 Then he said to
me, Prophesy to the breath;
prophesy, son of man, and say to
the breath, Thus says the Lord GOD:
Come from the four winds, O
breath, and breathe on these slain,
that they may live. 10 So I
prophesied as he commanded me,
and the breath came into them,
