Lancaster Social Science

Intellectual Party 2016


at the Institute for Social Futures
This event is a brilliant
opportunity to meet and
collaborate with research
students from around the
world, to present your work in
a friendly and encouraging
environment, and to engage
with some of Lancasters
renowned academic staff.

The Intellectual Party is more


than just another conference it combines academic
challenge with a lot of fun as
well!

In 2016 we will be holding


a Three Minute Thesis
competition with a grand
prize of 50 up for grabs, as
well as great runner up prizes
for the most creative,
entertaining and intriguing
three minute presentations. If
you think you would like try
out a novel and fun way of
communicating your research
be sure to register your
interest when you submit
your abstract: we will then
email you all the details you
need to get involved.

All PhD students are invited to join the Lancaster Social


Science Intellectual Party/Summer Conference on the

27 and 28 of June 2016, followed by an expedition to

the Lake District on 29 June 2016.

There will be a chance to join


other Intellectual Party goers
in a game of floorball (dont
forget your trainers!) and the
two days will be brought to a
close with a spectacular Grand
Finale.

All participants submit a 250 word abstract and give a twenty minute
presentation on their choice of topic. There will be some open sessions and
some hosted by members of staff on the following themes:
Infrastructures and cities
Simon Guy (FASS) and Carlos Lopez Galviz (LICA)
Materials and objects in motion, at rest and in use
Mette Kragh Furbo (DEMAND) and Monika Buscher (Sociology)
Politics in a global world
Mark Lacy (Politics, Philosophy and Religion) and Clare Hardaker
(Linguistics)
Representing and studying gender
Sylvia Walby (Sociology) and Veronika Koller (Linguistics)
Social futures
John Urry (Sociology) and Nick Dunn (LICA)
Social practices
Elizabeth Shove (Sociology/DEMAND) and Katy Mason (Management
School)
Visual cultures
Anne Cronin (Sociology) and Lynne Pearce (English and Creative
Writing)

The registration fee for non-Lancaster students is 68 which includes
refreshments, dinner and lunches during the two days of the conference.
This year, the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences will cover the costs of all
Lancaster research students whose abstracts are accepted.

After the intellectual


party/conference, you are
welcome to join us on a social
scientific expedition to the
Lake District on 29th June,
which will cost around 25.
You can sign up for the
excursion when you register
for the conference.
