Assignment I (August 2012)
1. A prismatic bar is subjected to loads as shown in Fig 1. The
bar is made of steel with modulus of elasticity 200 GPa and
cross sectional area 225 mm2. Determine the deflection
at the lower end of the bar due to applied load.
2. A stepped bar is subjected to point loads as shown in Fig 2.
Calculate the force P3 necessary for equilibrium if P1 = 120
kN, P2 = 220 kN and P4 = 160 kN. Determine the net
change in length of the member and the stresses
developed in different portions, if E = 2 105 N/mm2.

3. Prove that the extension of uniform bar due to self weight is half of the extension when
the load equal to its self weight is applied at the end of the suspended bar.
4. Derive an expression for elongation of a tapering rod of length l, big end dia d1, small
end dia d2 subjected to a tensile force F axially.
5. Draw stress-strain diagram for i) Structural steel specimen and ii) non ferrous metal
under tension and indicate all the salient points.
6. A bar ABCD 950 mm long is made up of three parts AB, BC and CD of lengths 250 mm,
450 mm and 250 mm respectively. AB and CD are cylindrical having diameters 25 mm
and 15 mm respectively. Rod BC is of square section 30 mm 30 mm. The rod is
subjected to a pull of 26 kN. Find i) stress in three parts of the rod ii) Extension of the
rod. E = 2 105 N/mm2.
7. A steel sleeve of 24 mm internal dia and 36 mm external
dia encloses an aluminum rod of 22 mm diameter. Length
of the rod is 0.4 mm longer than that of the sleeve which is
400 mm long as shown in Fig 3. Determine i) Compressive

load upto which the rod only is stressed. ii) Maximum load
on the assembly if the permissible stress in aluminum and
steel are 130 MPa and 175 MPa respectively. iii) The
deformation of the assembly under maximum load. Eal =
75 GPa, Est = 205 GPa.
8. A steel tube of 25 mm external diameter and 18 mm internal diameter encloses a
copper rod of 15 mm diameter. The ends are rigidly fastened to each other. Calculate
the stress in the rod and the tube when the temperature is raised from 15 C to 200 C.
Take st = 11 10-6 /C, cu = 18 10-6 /C. Est = 200 GPa and Ecu = 100 GPa. (Jan 2008)
9. A compound bar is made of a central steel plate 50 mm wide and 10 mm thick to which
copper plates 50 mm wide and 5 mm thick are connected rigidly on each side. The
length of the compound bar at room temperature is 1000 mm. If the temperature is
raised by 100 C, determine the stress in each material and the change in length of
compound bar. Assume ES = 200 GPa, EC = 100 GPa, S = 12 10-6 /C, C = 18 10-6 /C.

10. AB is a rigid bar having hinged support at C as shown in Fig 4. Steel and aluminum bars
support it at ends A and B respectively. The bars were stress free at room temperature.
What are the stresses induced, when the temperature rises by 40C?

Fig 4

11. At room temperature, the gap between bar A and bar B shown in Fig 5 is 0.25 mm.
What are the stresses induced in the bars, if the temperature rise is 35C?

12. A 12 mm diameter steel rod passes centrally through a copper tube 48 mm external dia
and 36 mm internal dia, 2.5 m long. The tube is closed at each end by 24 mm thick steel
plates which are secured by nuts. The nuts are tightened until the copper tube is
reduced in length by 0.508 mm. The whole assembly is then raised in temperature by
60C. Calculate the stresses in copper and steel before and after raising the
temperature, assuming thickness of plates remain unchanged. E S = 2.1 x 105 N/mm2, EC
= 1.05 x 105 N/mm2, S = 1.2 10-5 /C, C = 1.75 10-5 /C.
13. Establish a relationship between Modulus of Elasticity and Bulk modulus. Using this
relation, derive the relationship between modulus of elasticity, modulus of rigidity and
bulk modulus.
14. A bar of 25 mm diameter is tightly fitted into a tube. Find the stresses in the bar and
changes in the volume due to a compressive force of 60 kN in the bar if the tube
restrains 50% of expansion in diameter. Take length of bar = 400 mm. E = 2 x 10 5
N/mm2 and = 0.3.
15. A steel bar of 10 mm dia is subjected to an axial pull of 12 kN. If change in diameter is
found to be 0.0022 mm, determine the Poissons ratio, modulus of elasticity and the
bulk modulus. Take G = 78 GPa.
16. A bar 600 mm long is having square cross section of size 50 mm x 50 mm. If the bar is
subjected to an axial tensile load of 120 kN and lateral compression of 600 kN on faces
of sizes 50 mm x 600 mm, find the changes in size and volume. Given E = 2 x 105 N/mm2
and = 0.3.
