Hello everyone, February is here and Barwon
Heads is back to its buzzing normal.
We invited our members and you via Facebook to give
us your likes and dislikes from the holiday season.
Thank you for your responses both in writing and
anecdotally.
Here they are:

Positives

- The lights back in our trees in Hitchcock Ave (long

may they stay)
- The good coffee and wonderful food in town
- Our local supermarket
- The good conversation and friendly faces
- Greg from the ice cream shop washing the footpath
(pity it only stays clean for one day)
- Sharing fish & chips on the grassy area near the
rotunda
- The quick response by Fisheries to concerns about
crab netting on the river
- The Free shuttle bus sponsored by Barwon Coast,
the Bendigo Bank, CoGG, Press Here, The Echo, the
Barwon Heads Traders and Tourism Association and
the Ocean Grove Business Association
- The nice drivers who stop to let pedestrians cross
the road
The new toilet block built by Barwon Coast in the
bridge car park
The upgraded Pirate Park. It seems to have
something for everyone and particularly for the more
adventurous primary age children. There are no signs
urging caution which is always a bit dispiriting in any
'adventure playground'. It is actually adventurous and
safe as well. The double flying fox is a particular triumph.
The children seem to me very good at taking turns and
being kind to smaller players. I am very glad to have a
chance to say this.
- The Talking Heads Facebook site

Negatives

- The dirty footpaths why don't all traders clean

outside their businesses
- The smell of rubbish along Hitchcock Ave why isn't
there a regular rubbish pick up for traders during the
busy and hot summer

- Wide pushers taking up all the footpath space

- Cyclists on the footpaths (in particular adults with no
children); cyclists on the pedestrian path going up to the
Bluff
- People who don't pick up after their dogs
- Not being able to walk our dogs on the beaches (on
the Mornington Peninsula we understand dogs are
allowed on lead from sunrise until 9:00am and from 7pm
on designated beaches)
- The people who disobey the signs and walk their
dogs on the beaches
- There is no carnival this year (2 comments)
The very ugly Barwon Water pumping station (I
assume that what it is), with its cyclone fence, on the left
hand side as one approaches BH. Where are the trees?
This leads into the poor signage, as one gets closer
to BH why can't we do better than this for the entrance to
our village
The large Safeway trucks that go over the bridge
towards Geelong, we don't have a Safeway here and
there is no reason for them to go through our little town.
All the other LARGE TRUCKS that go through town.
People who smash glass bottles on the footpaths.
The lack of Myki facilities in Barwon Heads and
Ocean Grove
ENOUGH!!! AREN'T WE LUCKY TO LIVE HERE
Other follow up business from 2015
The BHA, with the support of the Trader's
Association and the Senior Citizens will continue to
lobby the CoGG for funds to replace the dangerous
uneven footpaths in Hitchcock Rd.
In 2005/06 Barwon Heads was promised a new
streetscape from Bridge Rd to Ozone Rd. This grand
vision put electricity underground, built new footpaths,
planted new trees and a new garden arrangement near
Bridge Rd. However, due to funding considerations only
part of the original project was completed and now a
decade later footpaths well over thirty years old have
deteriorated and are presenting a danger to both young
and elderly pedestrians. As business has grown north
towards Ozone Rd so too has foot traffic. We are all
entitled to walk on safe well-maintained footpaths and

we will continue to lobby CoGG to address our concerns
arising from their unfinished streetscape project.
The BHA Committee has made a preliminary
submission to the Victorian Electoral Commission
review of City of Greater Geelong council structure.
We look forward to the preliminary report, which we
understand will be released on the 20th January, and to
participating further in the discussion on the evolution of
a new structure for the City of Greater Geelong. We
anticipate that a new structure for representation will
provide the basis for fair and equal representation and
also enable a funding structure that ensures that
ratepayers' money is equally distributed. We encourage
all CoGG ratepayers to inform themselves and get
involved.
What's happening with the Pedestrian Safety
project? The BHA Committee is pleased with the final
plans of this project and commends the Steering
Committee for its work throughout the various stages of
the project's development. We expect construction to
commence in March. To review photo montages of the
proposed works see the BHA website at

CoGG for your further information.

Group. BHA is representing the Barwon Heads
community on this newly formed group, with other
community associations from Portarlington, Point
Lonsdale, Queenscliff, St Leonards, Indented Heads,
Ocean Grove and Drysdale. It is chaired by The Hon
Lisa Neville our state MP and Tess Walsh Assistant
Commissioner, Western Region Victoria Police. We will
report after the next meeting.
We will see you at our first meeting for 2016 on the 15th
February. 7:00pm at the Senior Citizens Centre. Our
guests are from Bellarine for Refugees.
Please send us your ideas for 2016.

Busy, Busy, Busy!

Of course, we all know that summer
holidays in Barwon Heads are very
busy times, but this year!
I was sitting on the beach on one of my few days off as I
watched two grandchildren playing the shallows of the
river. I could scarcely believe that in the two hours we
were there, the procession of cars crawling across the
bridge just did not stop. So it was hardly surprising that
we have been even busier this January than in previous
years.
Thank God we have had plenty of volunteers, and that
the new air-conditioner in the Sorting Room meant that
our hard workers and customers were able to keep
going even on those really awful days. On these kinds of
days, for once, the customers come early, then we DO

close the doors if the heat becomes unbearable, since

few customers come then. The eagerness with which
many of those who were on holidays had swooped on
our cheap, good quality clothes, books, pictures and
ornaments, was just wonderful. Many are holiday
people who we are delighted to see again at this time of
the year.
Those who camp over the water happily walk over, and
others are grateful that provided they can get in, there is
usually a place to park behind our shop. We do stress
that this parking is for church and Op Shop, (or Jigsaw
Library customers) only, as we know that during the
week, others visiting nearby use the area as a private
parking space. I have once or twice left carefully worded
notes under wind-screen wipers reminding people that
this is really NOT public parking.
In a similar fashion, although we are always willing to
show customers where our toilet facilities are, we do
stress that these are for volunteers and customers use,
NOT for the general public.
Of course the toilet is locked when church and Op Shop
are not in operation, and there is a notice reminding
people of the public toilets over the road, but sometimes
that message is not heeded.
So now, it will gradually become quieter with Easter
already in our sights. There is still such an incredible
amount of stuff being donated, and we are always
grateful.
Sometimes, the markings anything in this pile for 50c.,

alerts us to the fact that we have the left-overs from a

Garage Sale.
Most of this is quite sale-able, but I cannot reiterate too
often that we cannot accept electrical goods of any kind,
or cots, strollers, or bike helmets.
The Diocese of Melbourne will not allow any Anglican Op
Shop to on-sell these goods for safety reasons. After the
tragic death of a child who was placed in a cot bought
from an Op Shop, it was recognised that the abovementioned items are not always safe, and we cant take
any risks.
Meanwhile, I cannot credit the number of pictures which
have been donated recently. Certainly, we have had
many house-sales in Barwon Heads, and perhaps
people know that the home to which they will move will
not suit, or accommodate the pictures they have
enjoyed.
It is sad when I am putting very minimal prices on
pictures, because we are just inundated with them, to
realise that some would have cost fifty times more when
new.
Conversely, since I rarely get time to visit $2 shops, there
are some things I have priced at a far greater amount
than they should be. As I say to customers, The joy of
fossicking in an Op Shop is that YOU find the bargains.
We look forward to seeing you all soon, and God bless
you.

Dear Editor,
On January 27, driving from Geelong
at the peak of the once in a lifetime

probably saved my life on the Barwon

could not see the verge to get off the
road, and had to stop. A car came
around beside me, the driver asked if I
wanted to follow, guided me to the

Nippers 2016

The 2016 Nippers Summer Intensive Program was a great success with around
150 Nippers graduating after the final carnival day held in perfect conditions.
An unprecedented number of Nipper parents will obtain their Bronze Medallion before next season and we
have had a great response to the reintroduction of competition for our Nippers, with a large team competing at
Ocean Grove on 13 February.
The 2016/2017 season will see further changes with to the Program with a full competition program for our
Nippers team, a revised Summer Intensive Program format and a range of other events planned.
Our Nippers also now have an expanded and highly successful senior summer competition team at the Club to
look up to and who will be helping out with training and developing our Nippers team.
We have many people to thank for helping to make Nippers a success this summer: Benno's Meating Place,
Barwon Heads IGA, our Nipper leaders and water safety team, the parents who help out, our hardworking
Committee members and, of course, our wonderful 2016 Nippers.
It's a great time to be part of your town's Nippers Program and we would love to hear from families who would
like to know more at nippers@13thbeachslsc.asn.au or on 0419 396 903.

We are holding a residential Bronze Medallion camp for adults at the Club on
Friday 26 February (from 7 pm), Saturday 27 February, Sunday 28 February,
Saturday 5 March and Sunday 6 March (to finish by lunchtime).
We will complete the Camp while the weather and water is still warm and the Camp, which represents the
minimum number of hours that we can run a Bronze program over, means that it is completed quickly.
Obtaining your Bronze is an achievement in itself and a lot of fun, especially in a camp format, but it also sets a
great example for our kids. If you obtain your Bronze it will be more likely that your kids will get their Bronze and
experience all of the benefits that being part of the surf lifesaving movement brings.

Our rock pool holds 10 years of secrets and

memories. And as each passing season
takes with it another moment of time, we
have embraced different shades of the
oceans rocky walls. Our secret rock pool
has been a place to simply float. Or a place
to dive for treasure. More recently, a place to
wear a snorkel to look and see. Last
summer, we shared the excitement of
spotting our first small fish and watching our
first hermit crab. An amazing world under the

Think restorative, yin forward folds and

To truly appreciate a real moment, we have
to understand that the moment itself is
fleeting. And at this time of year, some of us
have had the luxury of moving to a rhythm
rather than a clock. Allowing for ourselves to
spend a little more time actually inside our
moments. From here, we can reflect on how
our moments are shifting and changing. And
if we are lucky enough to receive - we can
touch the moments between our moments.
Experiencing a freshness in our lives and an
openness in our heart. As well as an
intimacy and connection within ourselves.

Bad Breath
Having bad breath can be an embarrassing
problem especially if you are regularly face to
face with other people. Bad breath, known
professionally as halitosis, plagues many people
every day. Most cases of bad breath can be
remedied by efficiently brushing the teeth.
However, some types of bad breath are chronic or
recurring, which may warrant a visit to the dentist.

Do I need treatment for my bad

breath?
If your bad breath does not improve despite selfcare techniques, such as dietary adjustments and
thorough tooth brushing, you may need to see a
dentist about pursuing professional treatment.
Keep in mind that short-term remedies like gum,
breath mints and mouthwash may temporarily
freshen breath, but they are not a solution to the
underlying problem.

What should I expect my dentist to do

about my bad breath?
Your visit will begin with an examination and
questions about your daily habits, such as the
types of foods you eat and the medications you
take. Your dentist may then inspect your mouth for
signs of decay, infections or gum disease that
could be causing your bad breath.
Is there anything I can do to maintain better
breath?
Make sure you stay hydrated to keep your saliva

COMMUNITY SNAP
On Saturday I was
having lunch with my
d a u g h t e r, R o b y n
Watson, and my 6
month olsd grand
daughter Eva.
Eva was getting fidgety
on our knees or in the
pusher so Robyn put
her on a blanket in the
ground.
EVERYONE who
walked passed couldn't
take their eyes off Eva
playing on her blanket.
They looked happy,
amazed, and one older
lady even stopped to
chat about her own
grand daughter.

COMMUNITY ARTS GARDEN

So whats been happening down at the gardens
this month?
Well weve picked quite a substantial amount of fruit off the apricot tree and
are just waiting for the nectarines and plums to fully ripen. In terms of
vegetables, tomatoes and zucchinis seem to be growing the best in the drier
conditions, and one or two well-watered rouge tomatoes have almost taken
over the poly tunnel. It is getting to the point where a machete may be
required if you want to get from one end of the tunnel to the other.
Outside where things are much drier a couple of plot holders have
implemented agri-pipe and or bottle watering systems that are designed to
get the water right down to the roots of the plants and it does seem to be
showing reasonable results. I think this technique coupled with using lots of
organic material in your bed, ensuring an ample covering of mulch and
designing in a bit of wind protection is definitely the way to go for a water efficient garden.
In other news, our newly appointed president John M has brought us into the 21st century by launching a Barwon Heads Arts Garden Instagram page, to
which Costa from Gardening Australia has given his immediate approval.
Our user name is barwonheadsgarden for anyone who wants to @ or hashtag the group.
And lastly I am sorry to let you all down but I am not sure where all the vegetable puns are, lettuce hope they turnip.
Beets me where theyve bean. I am yam pretty annoyed actually because I just dont have the thyme to play hide and leek. Hopefully I find them under the
three peas couch, but there isnt mushroom under there. I mean olive puns but I feel like a dill because these are medi-okra at best.
Happy Gardening,
Rob Armstrong

BARWON HEADS SUSTAINABILITY GROUP

STAGE 2 OF THE COMMUNITY PLAN FOR A SUSTAINABLE BARWON HEADS
Last year the Barwon Heads Sustainability Group began consulting the community as part of the
review of the first version of the Community Plan for a Sustainable Barwon Heads. Some of you may
remember the 'Great Ideas for Barwon Heads' facilitated conversations in the new John Green's
Living Room' space as part of the 2015 Festival of the Sea. We also invited local community groups to
participate in this review. We have now summarised and analysed all the responses from this
community consultation, and have completed a draft of the Stage 2 version of the Community Plan for
a Sustainable Barwon Heads. This review of the Community Plan has been made possible through
funding support from the Barwon Heads Community Bank.

Here are a few details about the Stage 2 Plan:

1.

The Stage 2 Plan will show:

Thematic summaries of the 'Great Ideas' for Barwon Heads

Thematic summaries 'Projects' occurring in Barwon Heads ?
Links between 'Great Ideas' and 'Projects' ?
Gaps in 'Projects' (i.e. 'Great Ideas' that are not currently being undertaken by any group(s) in Barwon Heads)

2.

'Great Ideas' & 'Projects' have been categorised into seven colour-coded themes:

Blue

Brown

Grey

Green

Orange

Red

Black

3.
Once the Stage 2 edition of the Community Plan is finalised, it will be available on the Barwon Heads Sustainability Group
website www.bhsustainability.org.au - as well as in hard copy format around the town.
We will be informally discussing the draft version of the Stage 2 Plan at Beach House at 7.30pm on Wednesday 3rd February.
All welcome.

The performance of Carmen at the Barwon Heads

Community Hall on Saturday the 23rd of January went off
with a bang.
The wonderful cast from Emotion works had our audience of 185 people
mesmerized for two hours with an edgy interpretation of Bizet's Carmen; a 'cut'
opera incorporating various music and dance styles and plenty of dark humor. There was no holding
back from this St Kilda based company, evidence that a Barwon Heads audience is open to any thing.
Which is good news for us at the BHAC as we look forward to presenting more surprises in the future.
In February and March 2016, community consultation will take place to determine the demand for a Community Arts Hub. Barwon Heads is an arts town
but it is one without a dedicated arts facility and this COGG funded feasibility study will allow the community to articulate their views so please let us know
what you think. You can register for the community consultation by visiting our website at barwonheadsartscouncil.com.au.
For further inquiries on the feasibility study contact Victoria Strachan on 0427 032 933.
Once again we are pleased to be a community partner for M~M2016, 24 hr Extreme Arts Walk, to be held on 7 & 8th May 2016. We congratulate Fiona
Duncan on her role as District Coordinator for Ocean Grove and Barwon Heads. In 2014, 2000 people enjoyed a memorable closing ceremony on the
Barwon Heads foreshore and we look forward to doing it again in 2016.
In other news planning continues towards the Bellarine Arts Trail Weekend to be held in Spring 2016 where Artist studios in Barwon Heads and
Ocean Grove will be open to the public. We're still calling for expressions of interest from local artists. Please call Karen Shirley 0437 032 647 or email
us at barwonheadsartscouncil@live.com to register your interest. This event has been made possible through a City of Greater Geelong Community Arts
Grant and promises to be wonderful way to gain insight into local artists' practice and their studios.

BARWON HEADS URBAN FIRE BRIGADE

River fighting the fires there.

Wood

Know your fire plan

February 2016
It has been a hot and firey start to the summer season. With
blazes in WA and in our own backyard of Wye River, it has been
a testing time for the emergency services.
On Christmas Day a crew of volunteer fire fighters from the
Barwon Heads Fire Brigade left their families and Christmas
feasts to go to Wye River to help defend against the inferno that
had descended on the town. The crew of four joined other local
brigades in a strike team to be initial responders to support the
Wye River crew. They fought the fire all that long late afternoon
and through the night, until relief crews arrived the next
morning.
In the words of our Captain, Helen Wood, it was an intense
experience that tested the skills of the volunteers but showed
time and again what a well-trained team we have in our Brigade
members.
Team work was critical and the commitment to do what we
could, safely, with our fellow strike team crews to defend the
properties at Wye River meant we collectively helped save 25
to 30 houses, she said.
I am incredibly proud of all the volunteers in our Brigade who
gave their time whether it was directly fighting the fire,
undertaking blacking-out activities, or driving our forward
command vehicle to assist with ground observation duties
everyone gave their all.
A particular mention should also be made of the families and
friends of these brigade members for their support in letting
their loved ones go to Wye River.
The experience of Wye River and recent fires in more urban
areas such as Crib Point on the Mornington Peninsula is a

timely reminder that we must all have a fire plan.

Grass fires can start anywhere; it's important to know whether you will leave early, or stay and defend, well in advance so you just have to put your plan into
action if the situation ever arises, said Helen.
Download the FireReady app to your smart phone. This app provides the latest fire information and warnings. Set the app to notify you of incidents occurring
in a chosen area and use it to stay up to date with local Fire Danger Ratings and Total Fire Bans.
To find out more, visit cfa.vic.gov.au
We have a Facebook page informing you of local community safety events and insights to what the Brigade is up to. Make sure you jump on and give us a
like to follow what we are up to!
The Barwon Heads Fire Brigade is seeking new members. If you are interested in learning new skills, meeting new people and being part of a
team that contributes to the safety of our community, please call Captain Helen Wood on 0438 507 273, or email Secretary Kira Crawford Brooks

WHAT'S COOKING AT
THE LOBSTER POT?
Secrets and lies
Now that a hush has descended over Barwon
Heads and the holiday hordes have left our village
by the sea, life as the locals know it has returned.
The following may or may not have been heard
recently behind the now closed doors of the
Lobster Pot:
'At last'........ so nice and quiet.....so relaxing......I
could sleep all day':
a small red notched crab crouching in the corner
of the touch tank.
'Wonderful...alone at last.....old Grumpy and all
those horrible kids have gone....I was so sick of all
that hustle and bustle day after day. .. so
stressful...I've lost so much weight...I need a
break:
a prickly puffer fish in a tank by itself.
'Hello, is anybody there? Have you got any
lobsters left? where are the toilets?:
one lone last tourist knocking at the Lobster Pot
door.
'Why do so many people ask where are the
toilets ? Can't they read? It's very clear:
a tired and frustrated friend of the Lobster Pot at
the summer season review.

That review heard that many people visited the

Lobster Pot or Barwon Estuary Heritage Centre to
give its full name. Now that the main opening
season is coming to an end your chances to visit
are running out. Apart from Festival of the Sea it's
weekends only until Easter. After that it's by
appointment.
For those of you interested in the natural and
social heritage of our Estuary and find things too
quiet now and crave that busyness of the holiday
season please consider joining the Friends group.
You can contact the group through Barwon Coast.
Call in at the office or ring Maddie Glynne

For those readers who are visiting or new to

the area, the Hooded Plover is a small,
timid, endangered beach-nesting bird
which is endemic to our local beaches.
Hooded Plovers are the masters of camouflage and are
well-adapted to life on the beach that is, life on the
beaches of 100 years ago.
Their once tranquil beach habitat has now been
overwhelmed by people visiting the beach for recreation,
bringing all sorts of things that the birds are unfamiliar
with dogs, horses, 4WDs, beach balls, toddlers!
Hoodies now struggle to find a bit of undisturbed space on
the beach to breed and because their nesting failure rate
is as high as 90-95%, their numbers are declining, as too
few young are added to the population to sustain it.
Birdlife Australia and hundreds of coastal volunteers are
turning this dire situation around; by monitoring hoodies
and detecting when they have eggs or chicks and putting
protective management in place to relieve many of the
human pressures.
Hooded Plovers lay their eggs directly on the sand in a
simple, shallow nest scrape. The nest can be anywhere
above the high-tide mark, on the beach or in the dunes.
Hooded Plovers eggs are small (about the size of a 20cent piece) and very well camouflaged; so well
camouflaged that they are easily trodden on by accident.
Egg incubation takes 28 days and if completed
successfully, the tiny fluffball chicks hatch out with
surprisingly powerful legs. Adult hoodies don't feed their
young; the chicks must fend for themselves, feeding on
the sandhoppers found in decomposing seaweed. With
sufficient undisturbed feeding time, growth is rapid and in
just five weeks they can fly.
During those five weeks before flight, however, they are
at their most vulnerable and face many threats.
Aside from the ever present avian predators: magpies,
ravens, gulls, kestrels and other raptors, these chicks are
highly sensitive to disturbance from off-lead dogs.
When an off-lead dog is present, chicks will go into hiding
which means they can't feed and may die of starvation or
dehydration if they are disturbed for a long period of time
or frequently disturbed throughout the day. When the
chick's parents are preoccupied with fending off or
distracting off-lead dogs the chicks are then vulnerable to
avian attack.
An unleashed dog is more likely to explore and to move
unpredictably from the water to the upper beach, or even
into the dunes, where they are likely to encounter the
eggs or hiding chicks, and to accidentally step on and
crush them.
Believe it or not, the birds can tell the difference between
a dog on or off the lead.
Hooded plovers have been observed to be less reactive
to leashed dogs; a dog on the lead is very close to its
owner and moves at the same speed, in a predictable
path.
As a consequence disturbance is of a shorter duration
and less likely to be lethal.

WORD
THE
HOOD

I am overjoyed to let you all know that our Christmas

wish came early with the successful fledging of the
Hooded Plover chick at 42W!!
This is the first hooded plover fledgling along this stretch
of coast since January 2007, quite an achievement for
the Barwon Coast team!
The parents, PC & EH have started breeding again with
their next nest due to hatch soon.
Midway between 36W and 40W, NK & XU are the proud
parents of a single chick which hatched on 19/1/16.
This chick cannot fly until the 23/2/16, so please
observe the signs, give them space, leash your dog,
walk by the waters edge and avoid the breeding area at
high tide.

Success for the hoodies depends on everyone. Please,

if you are visiting any beach where hoodies are
breeding, respect the signs at the breeding areas.
Walk your dog elsewhere, but if that's not possible, keep
them on a leash at all times and walk at the waters edge.
Never walk at high tide as the nests are on the sand just
above the high-water mark.

oval precinct for the next 10 years.
The draft Master Plan is now available for community

BARWON HEADS SEAWALL & PROMENADE
Work on the final stage of the reconstruction of the
promenade will commence immediately after

Australia Day. The final stage involves the construction of

the concrete promenade and installation of a new
handrail. It is expected that sections of the promenade
will be closed for most of February and visitors to the site
are asked to follow the detour signage where necessary.
SUMMER SHUTTLE BUS
The shuttle bus has been another huge success this year
with thousands of people making use of the service. On
behalf of our community a very big thank you to our Gold
sponsors this year, Barwon Heads Community Bank
and the City of Greater Geelong.
The free bus operated from 27th December until 26th
January travelling around Ocean Grove and Barwon
Heads and the beaches starting at the Ocean Grove Post
Office. The Shuttle Bus towed a trailer to carry beach
gear including surf boards.
DOG ON BEACHES
Barwon Coast works closely with the City of Greater
Geelong and this year COGG has purchased a special
vehicle to improve patrols on public land.
For the last few years an educative approach has been
taken toward dogs on beaches and other public land.
We ask that all dog owners practice responsible
ownership by keeping their pets under control, picking up
after them and abiding by the signage onsite.
This year Penalty Infringements Notices will be
imposed where necessary.
PLAY IT SAFE BY THE WATER
Swim between the flags at our locally patrolled beaches Ocean Grove Main, Ocean Grove Spit 18W and 13th
Beach Main where Life Savers & Lifeguards will be on
patrol 7 days a week, for the peak holiday covering week
from Boxing Day to Australia Day.
At all beach access pathways we have installed Beach
Safety Signs that provide advice on general water

conditions, rocks, tide etc. and where the nearest

patrolled beach is. Please take time to read those
notices.
Always be alert on the beach when with children and
never swim alone.
No diving / jumping from jetty, promenade or bridge
Tragically serious incidents have occurred in recent
summers so it is really important to take personal
responsibility for your safety when near the water, be it at
the ocean or the river beaches.
Dangerous activities such as jumping or diving off the
Barwon Heads jetty, the promenade or the bridge can
lead to serious injury especially back injuries or even
death.
This year we have seen massive movement of sands
along the beaches and at low river flows the water depth
can be minimal, especially at low tide near the Jetty, so
don't do it!
OUR ENVIRONMENT
Blue-ringed Octopus are small timid creatures preferring
to hide in rock pools, seagrass and seaweed. This highly
venomous animal can be seen in our rock pools. When
calm and happy it will remain a sandy colour, but when
angry it will change to yellowish with bright blue rings all
over its body. This is a warning sign to leave alone and
move away. This animal produces deadly tetrodotoxin
and there is no antivenom. They are not animals to be
afraid of, they live along our coast all year round. We
need to respect the rock pools, watch where you put your
hands, be alert, and don't interfere with them. Please do
not interact with these animals. They too have a job to do
in our marine environment.
Copperhead snakes, in particular the juveniles are on
the move throughout our coastal reserves. These shy
snakes prefer to move away, but if interfered with has the
potential to bite. The coastal dunes are habitat for these
animals and we ask all using the beach; no people or
dogs in the dunes. Access the beach using the
formalised access ways to protect yourselves, our dunes
and the animals that live there.
Barwon Coast in partnership with Bellarine Bayside and
other key agencies and volunteers attended the
Portarlington Mussel Festival to engage visitors and
locals to the area on responsible fishing and boating,
local wildlife and responsible pet ownership. The day
was massive and well received by all. In total there were
6 agencies present who were supported by 8 local
community groups.

Barwon Heads Andrew Humphris is not ashamed to call

himself a Mamil (middle aged man in lycra). After taking up
cycling in 2008 as a way to keep fit after his footy playing days,
he has taken his passion for cycling over to France and now
introduces fellow cyclists to the experience of riding the
famous roads of the Tour de France in the French Pyrenees.
Bike France started from the culmination of experiences Ive had from many previous cycling trips
to France and Europe. I knew after my first trip to Europe with my bike that I would go back - I just
fell in love with riding over there! Despite being a big guy who is definitely not built for riding up big
mountains, there is something really special about testing yourself on the roads made famous in
the Tour de France. There is a real feeling of accomplishment and satisfaction you get when
making it to the summit after riding up a big hill for the best part of two hours. The quiet roads,
picture postcard scenery and the names of past champions etched on the road are helpful
distractions when it starts to hurt. One thing that became clear to me on past trips is that due to the
distance, travel time and costs, it is often difficult for many Aussie cyclists to experience riding in
France. With that, I took all the good things I learned from previous cycling tours and decided to
start my own cycling tour business. My aim was to let people come away and ride the famous
roads of the Tour de France on a fully supported tour, whilst staying in a beautiful location. Whats
different about Bike France Cycling Tours?
Our tours cater for both the pure mountain goat looking to take on multiple Hors Catgorie climbs
in the one day, right though to those on their first trip wanting to test themselves against some of
the famous climbs of the Tour De France.
We have a maximum group size of 10, so no big groups. This ensures that everyone gets well
looked after and gets personal service. Our main point of difference from other tours is that we stay
in the same accommodation for the entire time based in the heart of the Midi Pyrenees. All the
rides start and finish at the front door so there is no checking in and out of hotels and packing bags
everyday. This way everyone gets the chance to relax, eat, sleep and focus on riding the famous
Pyrenees. Our tours run for 7-9 nights, which means that you can fly out Australia on a Thursday,
spend a night in Paris either side of the tour, and be back in Australia on the following Monday.
(This makes a little bit easier to get the leave pass from the beloved!) Some of our guests also
arrange to meet their non-cycling partners afterwards in Paris or London or even San Sebastian in Spain, which is only three hours drive from our base. Where we stay
One of the things guests talk about most is our fabulous location and accommodation. Our base is a true cycling haven with 180-degree views of the Pyrenees looking towards
Spain. The accommodation is a fully renovated 17th century Chteau that has 6 separate twin share or king bedrooms each with their own private bathroom. We have our own
guest lounge, kitchen, secure bike shed and a heated horizon pool that also looks out to the Col du Tourmalet perfect for a post ride recovery with a cold beer! Our English
speaking hosts cater for just about every need for cycling groups. Their home cooked, french inspired three course dinners are often rated by guests as the highlight of the trip after
the riding! Liz is famous for her regional dish Parmentier de Canard Confit (or Duck Shepards Pie), with many of our hungry cyclists always asking for a second serve!
Apart from all the major climbs being a just a short warm up ride from our front door, there are plenty of other things to see and do including visiting the many thermal spas in the
area, browsing the local village markets, hiking, visiting the famous town of Lourdes or perhaps just lazing by the horizon pool overlooking the Pyrenees. This also makes it
appealing for the non-cycling partners who come along.
Pyrenees Challenge 2016 This year we are running a 9 night trip in conjunction with Paul Beretta from Berettas Bike Studio in Geelong. Paul is a very experienced and talented
cyclist and will be on hand to help with any mechanical issues that guests may have. He will also be leading the more experienced cyclists of the group up the big climbs, whilst I will
be at the back end with those who prefer to take it a bit easier! This year we take on all the major climbs in the Pyrenees including the Col du Tourmalet and the Hourquette
dAncizan which will feature in the 2016 Tour de France. The good thing about this trip in June is that guests will be able to ride the these climbs, then boast to their friends a month
later when watching the pros ride the same roads at the Tour de France on TV.
Although our trips are open to cyclists of all abilities, we recommend that guests do have some level of climbing experience and cycling fitness. The fitter you are the more
enjoyable the riding will be. We do have car support on most days just in case it gets a bit hard, and there is no pressure to ride outside your comfort zone. This year, we pack 7 days
of cycling and ride anything from 70-120km a day with between 1,000m and 3,000m of climbing depending on how hard you want to go. We normally get back from our rides in the
early afternoon so that leaves plenty of time to recover and relax at our horizon pool or visit some of the many attractions in the area. We have a few places remaining on this years
trip so if France is on the bucket list now is your chance!

The members of the BHCC have all

been training hard for the B2B our
Bridge to Bridge ride from Sydney to
Barwon Heads. It's less than two
months until the big ride from Sydney
to Barwon Heads actually happens and
training has intensified. About 1100 km
in eight days averaging around 150 km
per day.
We have had a lot of support from our local businesses
that are getting behind the B2B ride and supporting us in
our fundraising efforts for Give Where You Live, the
charity we are riding for.

During the holidays, we had a

sausage sizzle down the
main street. We were
generously supported by
Benno's Butchers and the
Bakery. We raised more
money that all went directly to
Give Where You Live the charity we are raising money for.

Our next event will be a band night being held at

Cogs and Togs

Recently the BHCC teamed up with the Icebergers!

We all met at the CFA at 5.45am on a cool Wednesday
morning. Loads and loads of bikes (Im told there were
over 40). Nev took the lead and we all rode to the river
then along the boardwalk. We hugged the water and
continued across the bridge to RAAFs Beach. Within a
few moments, we were all in the water, having a swim
and a chat. Lots of frolicking and no wetsuits. After our
dip, we all headed back to Annies for coffee and more
chat. Thanks so much to our new friends for a great
morning. Thats it for February. Have a wonderful
summer break and stay safe. There will be a lot of traffic
around over the next couple of months, so please to be
patient if you are caught behind a cyclist. Some of us
arent trying to go slow, we just are.
Happy cycling,

NETBALL NEWS
While the football and netball season has been in recess,
much has been happening behind the scene in
preparation for a bigger and better 2016 season.
The most exciting news has been the appointment of our
new senior coach, Olivia Wilson.
Olivia comes to Barwon Heads with a wealth of
experience, expertise and knowledge and has already
taken over the reins. Pre-season commenced in
November and, while it hasn't exactly been easy, it has
been inspiring and motivating and attendance has been
outstanding. Olivia has most recently played at
Grovedale in the GFL. She will be assisted by her mother
Sharon who also has a strong netball pedigree.
Selection trials for the senior squads will commence on
January 27th at the Barwon Heads netball courts. Junior

SEAGULLS BASKETBALL CLUB

Welcome back to summer season 2016 as we head into the last few rounds before finals.
Teams are all doing really well and we expect a few to make the finals. It is time to start thinking about whether you would like to play in a team for winter
season which starts beginning of Term 2. Registration will be towards the end of term 1 to give us time to select teams and submit to BPBA before Easter.
We have an exciting March planned with a social function to be booked at Supatramp for all teams. This is instead of a presentation day and will be lots of
fun for all ages. All team members will be emailed with details of this event once the date and time are confirmed. We are also planning a coach
development session for all current and aspiring coaches. This session would be great too for any parents wanting to know more about the game.
If you have any questions please email seagullsbasketballclub@gmail.com. And please like and follow our Facebook Page Barwon Heads Seagulls

Barwon Heads Cricket Club

February is the moving month
in BPCA cricket.
With the pre-Christmas games behind us and only finals
ahead in March those couple of games in the first few
weeks of the new year suddenly hold special
significance when youre chasing enough points to play
in finals.
We finished 2015 with a huge bang when, what had
been billed as the social event of the summer turned out
to be one of the best events of the decade. The annual
Christmas function with the fat bloke in the red suit and a
couple of other significant features, was held on the last
Saturday before Christmas. As it turned out the weather
was both friend and foe on the day with all junior and
senior cricket being cancelled due to the extreme heat.
With no cricket to play, the organisers were worried that
there might not be anyone there on the night, but true to
the spirit of the club, on the evening in question most of
the members of the club turned up and brought their
parents and other family members for a drink and
company. There was a taco van which started slowly
and then sold completely out. There was a really good
water balloon battle coordinated by Michael Moulton.
Only one really bad bit of behavior was witnessed when
one young chap believed that his father had disarmed
him unfairly and deciding to take dad on in a little hand to
hand. Of course dad and mum were having none of that
and the lad was interned for the duration of the night.
The fat bloke in red made a visit and handed out some
sweets. He was extremely popular standing on the tray
of a ute with a large bag of lollies in front of him which he
constantly threw into the air. At one point a young elf
called Miller was called upon to distribute the goodies

when Santa was feeling a little puffed as he tends to do.

The assembled throng of munchkins, whod been calling
Santas name like a rock star mosh pit, when they
realized that the elf had the bag of goodies, turned right
off St Nick and started calling Miller, Miller At
which point the significance of his new found fame and
popularity dawned on the elf and he started to play to the
crowd. When Santa turned to his assistant to have the
bag returned, the little elf gave him absolute doughnuts
and continued to distribute the goodies to the multitude.
In the end the old fellow gave up and started looking for
fillies in the crowd.
As soon as the big fellow had gone it was time to draw
the raffle. A smorgasbord of gifts and prizes had been
donated by the generous sponsors of the BHCC and
there were some delighted winners.
And so it seemed it was time to grab the kids and get off
home. A boiling hot day had come to an end and finished
with a couple of convivial drinks and a pre-Christmas chat
with friends at the cricket club. But there was another
twist.
Nobody knows how, and nobody has owned up to it, but
thirty seconds after the raffle was done and with every
mum and dad collecting their offspring to head home, the
sprinklers came on. Now if it was a deliberate action by
someone then that person is a genius, but nobody has
owned up to it. Most of the committee and all the people
who know and understand the system are sure that the
sprinklers never come on at that time on a Saturday night,
but on this night they did and it was fantastic.
Every child saw what had happened and ran directly from
their parents into the stream of the hoses.
What followed was mayhem, but it was clear to see the
delight of the kids, the resignation of the parents and the

elation of the committee that the crowd were now going

to stay for at least one more drink.
In the end the evening had been anticipated as one of
the best social events of the summer, and although the
day wasnt the best lead-up to the event, it lived up to its
billing and more.
Thanks to all those who attended, congratulations to
those who had a hand in the organisation and well done
to the players, who all put in and helped with cooking
BBQs, handing out sausages and drinks and just being
welcoming and friendly.
Theres been a little bit of cricket since the break.
A grade won and almost snatched an outright against
Wallington, B Grade won in a struggle against
Wallington in a 1 dayer and then suffered their first loss
of the season over the bridge of Ocean Grove. C grade
have been unable to defend totals of 150 in a couple of
two day games and D Grade won their first game of
2016. In juniors Under 17s won, Under 15s lost, and
Under 13s had a win to Goddard and a loss to Hyland.
The T-20 team won through to the grand final and played
Jan Juc at Barwon Heads on the Monday before
Australia day.
Oh and the BHCC won the game by 19 runs in a fantastic
match between two evenly matched, well respected
opponents who both play the game on the right spirit another cup for our new shelf.
Finals action is close. February will be a hard fought
month and some great matches are fixture for the month
so get on down to the ground, Grab a cool drink and say
GDay.
More next month.
Matt Dunell
