About the submitted work for the RDW 2016 main exhibition:
Title/Name of the collection or series: History of the past / Istoria trecutului
Title/Name of the work: Dynamic Future for the Old Danube Delta. New landscapes through (a) past
identity / Un viitor dinamic pentru Delta Dunrii. Noi peisaje pentru o identitate trecut
Description:

Danube Delta is classified as a national biosphere reservation of Romania, with a rural

specificty and traditional fishing activities, the area is characterized by its unique wetlands.
Formed some 2000 years b.p., the evolution of the delta's landscape in based on different periods
of alluvial accumulations. Being a dynamic landscape, still subject to continuous forming
proccesses and with high-risk zones, it is the place where the Danube and the Black Sea meet
and have direct influences on the territory, from vulnerabilities to qualities.
As a countermeasure to these problems, the project proposes a sustainable development
connected with the landscaping heritage of the area and local traditional activities of the people
of the Delta, which looks to the past, observing the evolution of the wetland landscape. Thus, the
proposal consists in a progressive process that differs from the natural one, a manmade process

which maintains the lanscapes specificity and tradition. Man's action over the landscape's
development is continuous and consists in efficient management which intelligently develops the
local economy through the control of exaggerated and unnatural expansions and doing without
interventions in protected areas.
Considering the use of local sustainable materials of local craftsmanship, a new
evolutionary direction is proposed, one of the memory of vernacular sustainability: lacustrine
fishing villages, eco - vacation tree houses, birdwatching observation towers, as well as floating
farming areas and special ponds for fishing competitions.
teritoriului, vulnerabiliti, dar i caliti.
dar care menine specificitatea peisajului i a tradiiei acestuia.
local prin controlarea extinderilor exagerate i nefireti i fr intervenii n ariile protejate.
meteugurilor locale, o nou evoluie, aceea a memoriei sustenabilitii vernaculare: o
vacan n copaci, turnuri de observaie pentru birdwatching, dar i zone agricole plutitoare i
heletee speciale pentru competiii pescreti.
Short description for the exhibition label:

Dunarea i Marea Neagr se ntalnesc i au influene directe (pozitive i negative) asupra

teritoriului.
The strategy is based on identifying key vulnerabilities that put their mark on the site
over time (social, environmental and economic vulnerabilities) and transforming them into the
main qualities of the area. The main elements that influence the evolution of the existing natural
habitat and the emergence of high-risk areas, are unique in Romania, this being the only area
where the Danube and Black Sea meet and have direct influences (both positive and negative)
over the territory.
