Introduction

The safety and workshop rules must be


followed everytime you come inside the
workshop.
Over stepping of safety and workshop rules
shall automatically exclude you from this unit
and you FAIL the unit

General workshop rules

Always listen carefully to the instructor and follow instructions


Machines or tools may only be used under the direct
supervision, guidance or authority of the technical staff
When class starts you must be fully dressed to commence
with workshop activities. No persons allowed in workshop
without proper PPE (Personal Protective Equipment)
Long hair and loose clothing that may be caught in machinery
must be secured
A minimum of 2 people must be in the workshop when
operating machinery
Always be patient, never rush or run in the workshop. You
could bump into another student and cause an accident
Avoid as far as possible skin contact with oils and solvents
etc. Make use of the disposable wipes, clean rags, barrier and
cleansing creams provided.
No food, drinks, magazines, cell phones or smoking allowed in
workshop. Also no horseplay

Switch off machinery when not in use


Clean up workplace and machines at the end of class
Immediately clean up any spills from the floor
Never use compressed air for blowing dust or swarf off
clothing, skin, or machinery
Keep cables off the floors as far as possible and certainly out
of circulation areas
Do not store items on the floor where a tripping hazard may
be created.
All tools required are to be drawn from the store and returned
in a clean and undamaged condition at the end of the class
Report all breakages of tools and machinery, faulty wiring,
worn or defective equipment immediately to the instructor or
technical staff
Report accidents, incidents and hazards to the supervisor
immediately

The student must get/buy:

A full body cotton overall (Men)

Long cotton pants and dustcoat (Ladies)

Safety shoes/boots

Safety glasses when working on a machine

Ear plugs

Leather gloves when handling sheet metal or performing


welding or working in Guillotine

Specific safety equipment for welding

Use a welding helmet with prescribed unscratched filter when


using an electric arc welding machine
Wear gas welding goggles when using oxy/acetylene
equipment
Wear a leather apron
Wear long sleeve gloves

Trade hazards

A hazard is defined as any activity with the potential to cause


harm.
Hazards fall into 6 major groups:
1

Mechanical hazards, with tools and machines

Electrical hazards, in welding and portable power tools

Chemical hazards in handling acids, etc.

Fire hazards, flame cutting

Industrial health hazards. noxious gasses, ventilation

Mental hazards due to fatigue etc.

Common workshop hazards

Machine and tool hazards arise when:


Machine/Equipment not properly guarded
Machine overloaded
Working with damaged tools
Loose power tool cable connections
Improper use of hand tools
No or split file handles
Operator ignorant of safety practices and precautions
Working without authorization on a machine

Electric welding hazards could include:


Open electric cables
Wet floors
Nearby flammable materials
Emission of toxic fumes
Leaving electric power switched on

Gas welding hazards include:


Leaking connections
Flying sparks
Hot, sharp off cuts
Unsecured cylinders
leaving gas cylinders (bottles) switched on

Projecting nails
Lifting without correct safety equipment

that non-compliance to these guidelines and rules will result in
exclusion from workshop resources and facilities.
I also declare that I am free of diseases and conditions that are
incompatible with the nature of work in the workshop.
I understand that I will fail this unit if I miss more than 2 classes.
Attendance will be always taken within 10 minutes after class
begins. Arriving later than 10 minutes into the class is recognized
as being absent. I also know that no sick notes are accepted.
