Do you want a different kind of politics in BC? In the 2013
provincial election, Green Party support tripled to more

Judith Eileen Hawes (Riehl)

Judy Eileen passed away at the
Kaslo Victorian Hospital after a
determined struggle with cancer.
Her husband of 45 years, Kirby, was
by her side.
Many family members stood watch
over the past several weeks of her
battle, admiring her strength and
spirit.
Judy was born in Flin Flon, Manitoba and lived in Creighton, Saskatchewan just across the border for most
of her younger life. She attended
elementary school in Creighton, a
small town where everyone watches
out for the children and each other.
Her high school was located across
the border in Flin Flon.

Kaslo faces similar economic challenges that too many

rural BC communities do. Finding ways to surmount
these challenges together is important in helping our
community to thrive in changing times.
One important way to do this is by developing the Gift
Economy. All residents of Kaslo and surrounding areas
are invited to come explore this together through a community potluck (a time honoured way of sharing our gifts
of food!), a short talk and gift circle, from 4 7 pm on
Saturday, February 13 at the United Church. Come for all
or part of it. A gift circle is a real time, in person way for
community members to meet and share skills and goods.

A Smart Community
The community of Queens Bay is receiving national
recognition for its 2015 efforts to be FireSmart. FireSmart
promotes community wide participation in the use of
FireSmart practices that cut the potential for home ignition and minimize the loss of life and property to wildfire,
independent of firefighting efforts.
FireSmart Canada is bestowing the award on the community for a number of initiatives, including:
The creation of a FireSmart Board organized by
champion Nancy Corrin
The completion of a community wildfire assessment report by a local FireSmart representative
(made possible by grant funding from Area E
director, Ramona Faust)
The development of a FireSmart community plan
Fuel management work that involved thinning and
trimming trees around the community hall and
installing a new asphalt roof, rooftop sprinkler system and water storage tanks
The purchase of 1000 gallon water storage bladders
which were sold to residents
Ongoing FireSmart events in 2016 to further reduce
hazards through education and activities
Representatives from FireSmart Canada will present
the award to the community on Wednesday, February 10
at 12 pm at St. Francis in the Woods, 9230 Lauder Road,
Queens Bay.

service?

At the end of January we celebrated National Non-Smoking Week. If you missed

that goal, there is still help available to
help you quit and make British Columbia
healthier and more smoke-free. BC remains the most smoke-free province in all
of Canada, and much of that is due to the
support of public health and healthcare
professionals.
Services available to smokers here in BC
are made available through our QuitNow
program as well as the provincial BC
Smoking Cessation Program, which offers
free Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT)
and subsidized medication for smokers.
The QuitNow approach:
One-on-one coaching: Our dedicated
and cessation-trained Quit Coaches are
free to speak to you by phone, instant
chat, or in our community forum.
Personalized planning: Our interactive
planning tool walks users through each
step of the quitting process. Features
such as text message updates, email tips,
quizzes, and monthly contests allow users
to build a plan thats right for them. To
get started, login to QuitNow and head
to My Quit Centre.
Easy access to NRT and medication: The
BC Smoking Cessation Program offers
a 12 week supply of free Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT) or medication
(Champix or Zyban) at a reduced cost
(depending on pharmacare coverage).

all there wanting to help you.

GRIEF AND LOSS SUPPORT

GROUP IN KASLO.
Free and Condential
Monday afternoons, six weeks,
March 7 April 11
Working our way through grief is some
of the hardest and loneliest work we
will ever have to do. It can be difcult
for us to feel comfortable in our usual
social settings. Other people often cannot
understand our grief and, as much as they
would like to, dont know how to support
us. A grief support group, with others who
have suffered a similar loss, can provide
the help we need. Others listen willingly
and share their own stories of loss. It can
be reassuring to learn that what we are
feeling is normal. If this could be helpful
to you or someone you know, please feel
welcome to call for more information.
Register ahead with Chelsea at the
Hospice Society of North Kootenay
Lake, 250-353-2299 hospice@kaslo.org
With thanks to Victorian Hospital of
Kaslo Auxiliary Society for their nancial
support of this event.

The charge for an ambulance trip is $80.

However, if you are on MSP Premium
Assistance or are an Income Assistance
client you are exempt from ambulance
fees. See www.bcas.ca/about us/fees/ for
more information.
What to do if you need to call
an ambulancewhat to say
when you call for help:
First of all determine what the nature
of your emergency is. If it is obvious you
need an ambulance call 911 (available
24/7). Obvious examples could be
anything from a person choking; having
difculty breathing; loss of blood; reduced
level of consciousness; a motor vehicle
incident; or a cyclist crashing their bike. If
someone is having health issues and you
are unsure what to do, a number you can
call is 811 (available 24/7) to speak with
a health professional who can advise you.
If you do call 911, the dispatch operator
will assist you. When you call for help
remain calm and speak clearly, know your
location, be able to identify yourself, state
what is happening, who is involved, and
dont hang up until you are told to by the
dispatcher.
Be prepared - have a list of medications
along with any ofcial medical directives
e.g. Do Not Resuscitate Order DNR; or a
Living Will; etc.) posted in an envelope
on your fridge door. This will greatly
assist medical personnel. Post your street
address and phone number near your
telephone for quick reference.

Request for Proposals
The Kootenay Conservation Program (KCP) and Regional District of Central
Kootenay (RDCK) are seeking proposals for projects that will benefit
conservation in the rural areas around Kootenay Lake, specifically electoral
areas A, D, and E within the RDCK.
The purpose of the Fund is to provide local financial support for important
projects that will contribute to the conservation of our valuable natural
areas. Kootenay Lake Local Conservation Fund (KLLCF) funding is available
for conservation projects that result in the reduction to a known threat to
biodiversity. The themes for the Fund are water conservation, wildlife and
habitat conservation, and open space conservation.
Projects that are technically sound and effective, and provide value for
money through partnerships with other funders will be given priority.
Proponents must be a registered not-for-profit organization, First Nations
band, or local government. Unqualified groups or organizations may
partner with a qualified organization. A Technical Review Committee will
review project proposals and make recommendations to the RDCK for final
funding approval.
To apply for funding, go to www.kootenayconservation.ca and click on
the Kootenay Lake Local Conservation Fund tab. Review the Terms of
Reference paying particular attention to Section 8 Fund Design and then

Threads Guild Membership

Exceeds 100!
Something is happening at the Slocan Valley Threads
Guild. More than one hundred people have joined or
renewed membership in the Guild for 2015 to 2016! The
renovated former one room schoolhouse, located at 7112
Perrys Back Road (just off Highway 6, north of Winlaw),
is humming with fibre arts activities this winter.
One returning member expressed how much she had
missed sitting around the table at the monthly meetings,
feeling that she was part of something so much greater
and older than ourselves. The second half of the meetings
is always stimulating, as each member has an option to
show and share their work.
Programming coordinator, volunteer Linda Out, has
been scheduling workshops and Members Days to enable
members to share their skills in felting, rug hooking, basketry, quilting, dyeing (natural, procion, and acid), knitting (socks, faire isle technique) and spinning, for example.
Winter is also the time to collect and prepare items
that will be sold at the annual Yard and Yardage event,
to which the public is invited. It will be held this year on
Sunday, April 17 from 10 am to 2 pm at the Guild. If you
are decluttering, we are ready now to accept donations
of fabric, yarns and craft supplies. You could call Sharon
at 250-226-7703 or Jasmine at 250-352-7152 to arrange
drop-off or pickup.
To learn about the group, programs, meetings, rentals,
the library and equipment availability you can visit the website www.slocanvalleythreadsguild.wordpress.com and/or
become a member for $10 per year. Members have been
receiving tantalizing weekly emails containing a full menu
of upcoming classes, members days and Gab n Jab sessions.
