The Nelson History Theatre Society in conjunction

with Touchstones Nelson, is conducting archival research
of the war years in regional museum archives; newspapers, diaries, articles, memoires, etc. To then reach out
to families throughout the Kootenays and beyond where
possible.
The collected material including recorded accounts,
audio and video will then be organized and categorized
in such as way as to be cross referenced according to
time, place, activity etc. The final product will be a website which would be made available to regional institutions such as museums and schools. It will, of course, also
be possible to add material to the website on an on going

4th Annual RoboGames

Theyre off ! The fourth annual RoboGames competition

has launched, and teams of youth ages 10 - 16 are hard at
work designing, building and programming robots across
the West Kootenay. All teams are preparing for the 2016
RoboGames competition to be held on Saturday, February 20 from 9 am to 3 pm at Selkirk Colleges Mary Hall
in Nelson.
RoboGames is a collaborative initiative between the
Nelson Tech Club and GLOWS, with support from the
Kootenay Association for Science and Technology and
Selkirk College. While in past years the robotics training
was held exclusively in Nelson at Selkirk College, this year
Nelson Tech Club president, Brad Pommen developed a
series of online training courses, eliminating the need
for teams to travel more than 200 km roundtrip weekly
to attend. Additionally, GLOWS program manager, Beth
Corven delivered more than 35 Arduino base kits to teams
throughout the region in the early weeks of December.
As a result, RoboGames 2016 is the largest, most diverse
event we have ever attempted to date.
Over 40 teams comprised of 74 youth from across the
region will be competing for the title of RoboGames
Champions.
Teams range from first time novices to veteran competitors. All will have the opportunity to compete in one or
more of the following events: Obstacle Course, Line Following Course, Robot Soccer 1 on 1, Special Trick Competition, and Robot Battles.
The goal of GLOWS is to promote science and technology learning among our young community members by
making science and technology fun, accessible and non
intimidating. Ultimately we hope that these youth will
incorporate scientific and technical learning into their
future education and career choices, enhancing community vitality and sustainability as our region moves into
the middle of the 21st century. Making technical learning
less intimidating is a crucial early step toward encouraging the regions young people to incorporate science and
technology in their future learning and career plans, thus
increasing the regions chances of retaining technical talent in the longer term.

Are you tired of riding in the singles line? Skied Dating is the event for you! On February 13, this Rossland
style speed dating event will take place at RED Mountain
Resort.
Participants will meet at the bottom of Red Chair at 1
pm. The ride up the chair is your date and then you ski
back down and meet your next match at the bottom. This
allows the opportunity to have many mini dates in one
afternoon. Each participant will be given a sheet where
they can check yes or no to indicate interest in each of
their dates. If two people check yes for each other, its a
match and the event coordinator will give them each others contact information.
This is a quirky, fun, no pressure event, says Tara
Kowalchuk, Skied Dating coordinator. Its totally Rossland style and gives people an opportunity to meet other
singles who love to ski or board. The event has taken
place once before and was fairly successful, there were a
few people who met and ended up dating for a while. The
great thing is that you are meeting people who you already
have something in common with, says Kowalchuk. Its
a good starting point and keeps the conversation from
getting awkward because at least you can talk about the
snow!
We get participants from a range of different ages, so we
break them down into age categories to try to ensure better matches. However, if you have ridden with everyone in
your age group you are welcome to ride with participants
from other groups. We are asking people to preregister if
possible, as it makes setting up the categories much easier.
You can preregister by contacting Tara at tara.kowalchuk@gmail.com, or by visiting Guest Services at RED
Mountain Resort. There is also day of registration from
12 pm 1 pm in the RED Resort Conference Center, in
the Base Lodge. It costs $10 to participate, which includes
a hot chocolate in the lodge. It does not include a lift pass
though, you need your own.
Come try Skied Dating at RED Mountain Resort on Saturday, February 13. Youre guaranteed to have a good time
and who knows, you make meet a ski buddy for life.
For more information, contact Tara Kowalchuk, Skied
Dating coordinator at 250-921-8272 or tara.kowalchuk@
gmail.com
