For many history buffs, the wine country offers not just spectacular wines and breathtaking
views, but an opportunity to experience the Wild West flavor of the regions origins. Few wine
tasting experiences present a better sense of the past than Huge Bear Wines, located in the historic
Calistoga National Bank building. The setting is a perfect match for the handcrafted wines they
produce.
Founded by the owners of Knights Bridge Winery, the Huge Bear namesake comes from an early
twentieth-century newspaper article chronicling a local Grizzly bear who repeatedly harassed a
Knights Valley Justice of the Peace in the early 1900s. The bear, apparently having little regard for the
judicial branch of the government, made frequent raids on the mans pantry and was never
apprehended for his misdeeds. His rogue nature proved to be motivational for organizers of the Bear
Flag Revolt and earned him a place of honor on the Bear Flag, created to represent the short-lived
Independent Republic of California. Today, the winery channels this story of unbridled, unstoppable
self-direction into its releases.
Huge Bear Wines further represents the rascally bear by adorning their wines with a whimsical
label adapted from Lynd Wards classic Caldecott Medal-winning book, The Biggest Bear. While the
owners of the Huge Bear Wines eschew pretentiousness, dont let the lighthearted approach give you
the impression that Huge Bear wines are anything but seriously delicious. The winery currently
produces Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Ros, Sauvignon Blanc and a red blend
called Ursa Gigantes, with a Napa Valley Cabernet Franc rounding out the offerings, many of which
have garnered 90+ scores from Connoisseurs Guide and Wine Enthusiast.
Under the guiding hand of winemaker, Meredith Leahy, Huge Bear has gained the attention of
wine enthusiasts worldwide. Initially, it was the science of medicine that captures Leahys heart. But a
visit to a winery in France would change the course of her life. After discovering the science behind
winemaking, she chose to refocus her interest in anatomy to a fascination with viticulture, learning
the art of winemaking at Mumm Napa in 2005. In 2006, Meredith further added to her knowledge

MEET THE
ARTIST
Thomas Arvid
Cabernet Release Day on Saturday, February 6. The relationship between Arvid and Napas
Silver Oak Cellars is something quite special. For more than 15 years, Silver Oak Cellars and
Arvid have come together to reveal a new Arvid signature painting for every new Release Day.
This year, Arvid will present an extremely limited release on metal of his painting titled Its a
Shore Thing. Twice a year, wine lovers gather to commemorate Silver Oaks newest vintage
release with an entire day devoted to savoring delicious wine and exquisite food. Staying true
to the Release Day tradition for over a quarter century, this years festivities will be held at
Silver Oak Oakville Winery in Napa Valley.
Once again, Thomas pushes the envelope by introducing a new printing process called
sublimation by infusing his art images into metal, creating a high-definition effect. Arvids
limited-edition on metal titled Unstoppable was revealed last year, displaying a bevy of
Silver Oak corks that embody the joy of sharing the bounty of the Release Day harvest.
Seeing an Arvid masterpiece on metal is something to behold. The color, tone, and its
richness of depth is an art unto itself.
Napa Valleys Doug Shafer of Shafer Family Vineyards said,
Arvids style is big and bold, with enough selected detail and

precisely what winemakers hope to bring to their top vintages.
Arvid is inspired by the life of the vine and the dedication that it
takes to get from grape to glass. Passion and perseverance are
paramount for both the winemaker and the artist. Enjoying their
AT
finished work together results in the most exceptional experience in
art and wine. Sharing a glass of wine and good conversation is at the
heart of everything Arvid does.
In his time in California, a monumental memory was made when
Arvid was honored as the official artist of the First Annual Pebble
Friday, February 5
Beach Food & Wine Festival, featuring his painting titled Ultimate

Destination. Capturing the excitement in sampling worldrenowned vintage reserves, this composition takes you back to a
moment in time that will be forever cherished. With the taste, the
aroma, and the company of good friends, Napa Valley is his
Ultimate Destination.
Arvid embodies the art of living graciously with generosity of
spirit. As he says, The good things in lifework that you love,
places you visit, wine that you drinkare best when shared.
Sharing his love of Napa Valley is evident in the cues found within
so many of his masterpieces.
Both his paintings and his heart are generous in size, making for
Exceptional Hand Crafted Works of Art
humble conversations while we all stand in awe of his artistic talent.
Arvid is equally awed by the response to his work: Wine is a great
subject because people are familiar with it; they really connect to it.
My paintings are really the landscapes between people sharing
wineits an honor that my collectors find personal fulfillment in
my work, especially when Im just doing what I love.

BEAULIEU

Latour, celebrates a historic milestone this year, its 115 anniversary. Located
in the heart of the Napa Valley, off Highway 29, Beaulieu Vineyard welcomes
visitors, near and far, to one of the finest wineries in the world.
In 1900, Georges de Latour founded his winery with the vision of creating
world-class Cabernet Sauvignon from the exceptional terroir of Rutherford.
Today, Georges de Latour Private Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon has become
the benchmark Napa Valley Cabernet as well as one of the most collected
American wines.
Tasting Options
Wine lovers are greeted with a glass of wine staying true to Latours
hospitality tradition then guests have a choice of tasting a wide range of wines
in one of Beaulieus four distinct tasting rooms. For those without a reservation,

level, visitors may sample four select tastings off a set menu, for $20. Outside,
theres the new Patio Tasting for $25 available all winter (weather permitting).

Special Curated Wine Flight Combines NFL Stars and their Superstar Wines
The Napa Valley Wine Train Announces
Championship Wine Flight To Celebrate Super Bowl 50
The Napa Valley Wine Train is scoring another touchdown with
wine fans. Now through the end of football season, the historic
Napa Valley Wine Train kicks off its new Championship Wine
Flight featuring wineries founded by such NFL greats as Charles
Woodson, Dick Vermeil and Rick Mirerall in anticipation of
Super Bowl 50to be played February 7 in Santa Clara, CA.
The Napa Valley Wine Train offers a 36-mile, round-trip journey
from Napa to St. Helena through beautiful Wine Country vineyards
and past famous and historic wineries. Traversing on the original
rail line built in 1864, guests of the Napa Valley Wine Train
experience one of Napas most distinctive fine-dining restaurants,
savoring multi-course meals while traveling in a museum-quality
antique train.
We are delighted to welcome locals and visitors to join us on
the Wine Train to enjoy our Championship Wine Flight, and we are
equally thrilled to welcome Super Bowl 50 to the Bay Area in
2016, said Anthony Giaccio, Napa Valley Wine Trains CEO. It has
been our vision since the Wine Trains inception to offer local wines
that complement our fresh cuisine and reflect the heritage of the
Napa Valley.
The Championship Wine Flight in honor of Super Bowl 50 will
be offered on lunch and dinner trains to accompany the delicious
menu selections now until the end of February 2016. The
Championship Wine Flight is $20, with $1 of those sold donated to
the NFL Hall of Fame Players Foundation.
The Napa Valley Wine Train offers an award-winning wine list
recognized for supporting the local wine community and featuring
wines predominantly from the Napa Valley. Executive chef Kelly
Macdonald suggests a wine pairing for each menu item while
offering wines by the glass and by the bottle. Additional wine
flights are also available so adventurous Wine Train passengers can
select red, white or sweet flights while following the informative
printed tasting notes.
The Championship Wine Flight is a roster of NFL greats with
their spectacular wines, and is loaded with winners. All of the wines
in the flight are available at the Wine Train Store located inside the
Wine Train depotthe best place to shop for these NFL vintners
wines and many others for your own Super Bowl 50 party.

off with the judging, which took place in the first week of January at
the Cloverdale Citrus Fairgrounds. More than 60 elite wine judges
from all areas of the wine industry, including media, trade, education,
retail and restaurant/hospitality, gather together to participate in a
blind judging. Wines are categorized by varietal and price range,
evaluated, and then select winners are invited to participate in the
Public Tasting event.
For the past ten consecutive years, the number of wine entries
submitted to the SFCWC has grown rapidly. In 2015, the
competition broke all entry records with 6,417 wines entered from
28 states in America, illustrating the steady demand for a variety of
options among wine consumers, and firmly establishing the event's
prestige as a highly esteemed wine competition.
The SFCWC supports wine studies, enology and viticulture
programs for higher education institutions in California. Leftover
wines from the competition are donated annually to Santa Rosa
Junior College, Fresno State University, Sonoma State University and
California Polytechnic University in San Luis Obispo.
Follow the San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition on Twitter
@SFCWineComp for info on the event and for special contests,
including ticket giveaways, leading up to the Public Tasting.

Calistogas Winter in the Wineries Passport Series
Winter may not be the first time of year that pops into your head
when thinking about a visit to Californias premier wine region. But
wine country is enchanting and beautiful throughout the year. Winter,
with fewer crowds and cooler temperatures, is a great time to visit.
With Calistogas Winter in the Wineries passport series running
now through February 7, visitors to the northern Napa Valley town
and its surrounding areas will be treated to great wines, special
restaurant offers and discounts to area lodging and shopping.
For $50, passport holders have access to 15 wine tastings
throughout the two months of the series at some of the regions large
and boutique wineries, including Castello di Amorosa, Sterling
Vineyards, Bennett Lane and August Briggs.
At Bennett Lane Winery, visitors will be treated to fine wines in a
luxurious setting. Located on Highway 128, just north of Calistoga, is
a family-owned winery that is home to the Maximus feasting wines,
blends intended to complement food. Bennett Lane is the only winery
with its own hot air balloon. Adventurous spirits can reserve the
balloon for a private tasting in the air complete with limo
transportation. A standard flight includes a picnic lunch at the winery.
Castello di Amorosa invites passport holders to storm the castle,
referring to its authentically-styled 13th century Tuscan castle. The
winery is best known for its stunning architecture, but it also produces
stellar wines, including Italian varietals and blends, such as Sangiovese
and Pinot Grigio. Located three miles south of Calistoga, the castle
opens early9:30 a.m.and visitors can roam the grounds or take

LOXTON CELLARS
Have a Walkabout
Loxton Cellars produces premium wines from outstanding vineyard sites, made
personally by Chris Loxton, owner and winemaker. The wines showcase the
varietal and the vineyard in which they were grown. Since the character of the
wine is determined by the vineyard, he walks these vineyards during the year to
determine the best site to harvest the grapes for his hand-crafted wines. The
grapes are usually picked at night and gently hand-processed to maintain the best
quality. The primary focus for the winery is Syrah, Zinfandel and Cabernet
Sauvignon, and small quantities of other wines are made that are sold primarily
through the wine club.
Growing up in the Riverland of South Australia, Chris was raised around the
family vineyard at Moorook and he is the fourth generation involved in growing
grapes. After studying at U.C. Davis, he honed his harvest experience skills at local
wineries. Chris founded his own winery in 1996 to specialize in limited and handcrafted, ultra-premium Syrah wines. His father and grandfather grew Syrah
(Australians call it Shiraz) and other Rhone varieties and that experience became a
natural focus for him.
Enjoy Wine Tasting: Visitors will enjoy the working winery and tasting
room bar with featured wines offered daily from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Walk-ins welcome!

Twisted Roots Celebrates National Drink Wine Day all Weekend Long
Celebrate February 19th, 20th and 21st
Twisted Roots Carmel Valley Tasting
Room at Lyons Head Gallery, 12 Delfino
Place in the heart of the valley is open
Friday through Sunday from 12:00 p.m. to
5:00 p.m. The tasting room pours wines
created from estate grapes on vines first
planted in Lodi in 1918. Did you know the
winerys name came from a twisted root that
the family dug up from the vineyard?
Hey wine lovers! February 18th is
National Drink Wine Day. The tasting room
is not open on Thursday, February 18th so
owners Josh and Julie Ruiz have decided to
celebrate all weekend long! Stop by the
Tasting Room on Friday, Saturday or Sunday,
February, 19-21. This is when they will be
celebrating by spreading the love and health
benefits of wine. The first 10 wine tasters
each day get a free wine tasting. If you are
not an early bird and dont make the first 10
wine tasters dont worry. The tasting room
will offer two-for-one tastings all weekend!
Celebrate National Drink Wine Day all
weekend long with the team at Twisted Roots
Tasting Room!

The Restaurant at Wente Vineyards uses locally grown organic
ingredients and features ingredient-driven California wine
country cuisine. While the menu holds its foundation in
American dishes, it is influenced by French and Italian provincial
cuisine. The seasonal menu changes daily, utilizing produce from
The Restaurants organic garden.
Wente Vineyards is also the only winery in Livermore Valley to
offer a championship 18-hole public golf course.
Family, food, entertainment, and of course, the wines beckon
