Newton Solution Convergence Parameters (V30.3)

Two new solution parameters in Version 30.3:

Controlled bus Q mismatch convergence tolerance
(VCTOLQ = 0.1 MW/Mvar)
Controlled bus voltage error convergence tolerance
(VCTOLV = 0.00001 pu)

Ensure voltage at controlled bus is being controlled if at least one of its

controlling devices is not at var limit.

Compatibility with convergence test in previous releases:

Version 28 or earlier, set VCTOLQ = 1000, VCTOLV = TOLN/SBASE
Version 29.0 through 29.5.1, set VCTOLQ=TOLN, VCTOLV =10
Version 30.0 through 30.2.2, set VCTOLQ=TOLN, VCTOLV=0.0001

Page 27

Siemens Power Technologies International

Allows Multiple Voltage Controlling Devices (V30.1)

Multiple set-point mode voltage controlling devices are allowed on the same
bus or on buses connected by zero impedance lines, such as
Generators
Switched shunts
Shunt elements at the sending end of FACTS devices
VSC dc line converters
An RMPCT data item is now associated with switched shunts and FACTS
devices.

Page 28

Siemens Power Technologies International

Switched Shunt Adjustment (V31)

Switched shunts which control voltage to a band can oscillate due to:
Multiple devices electrically close to each other
Large admittance blocks
Narrow voltage bands
New solution parameter SWVBND specifies the percentage (population) of
such switched shunts whose controlled voltage is outside of the desired
voltage band which can be adjusted on any single adjustment cycle.

Page 29

Siemens Power Technologies International

Switched Shunt Adjustments (V32.0)

Previous adjustment method:
Pre-defined switching sequence based on input order
Reactor & capacitor components cannot be on simultaneously
New features:
Status attribute
Both reactors and capacitors can be on at the same time
Optional adjustment method to find a combination of reactors and/or
capacitors with the next larger/smaller total admittance.

Multiple Fixed Shunts at a Bus (V31)

Similar in data structure to loads and machines

Identified by bus and 2-character ID
Can be switched in/out
Inherits area, zone and owner attributes of bus
Negative sequence same as positive sequence
Can enter separate zero sequence admittance

New Transformer Code (V31)

Page 32

When CW = 3, transformer turn ratios (WINDV) and limits (RMAX and

RMIN) for voltage or MVAR controlling transformer windings are
specified in pu of nominal winding voltage (NOMV)

(When CW = 1, items are specified in pu of winding bus base voltage)

Siemens Power Technologies International

FACTS Devices (V31)

Shunt element may control voltage at remote bus

A switched shunt can control reactive power setting of the shunt element of a
FACTS device

Maximum number of FACTS devices is increased:

From 20 to 50 at 4,000 through 11,000 buses
From 40 to 100 at 12,000 through 49,000 buses
From 99 to 250 at 50,000 buses and above

FACTS Devices & DC Lines Identifiers (V31)

Identify FACTS devices, two-terminal dc lines, and multi-terminal dc lines by

a 12 character device name

Same approach as VSC dc lines

When old Saved Case File is read, device names are set to old device
number, left justified

Old Response Files, Python programs, and IPLAN programs referencing

device numbers will continue to work

Wind Machines (V31)

Wind machine explicitly identified in power flow data

Control Mode:
0 = non-wind machine
1 = specified var limits (same as non-wind machines)
2 = use var limits from MW output and specified PF
3 = fix var output determined from MW output and specified PF

Non-Conforming Loads (V32.0)

Each load is characterized as either conforming (i.e., scalable) or nonconforming (i.e., fixed)

Only conforming subsystem loads:

Are modified during load scaling
using SCAL API
Participate in transfer increment
in P-V analysis

Transformer Phase Shift Angle Adjustment (V32.1)

For some European transformers, a change in phase shift angle results in a

change of turns ratio.

Transformer control mode (5) to select asymmetric phase shift angle

adjustment to control active power flow.

For regular (symmetrical) phase shifter, control mode is 3, as before, and

winding connection angle is not used.

area buses
AREA report tabulates 2 categories of net interchange:
Tie flows, Tie flows plus loads
Similar options for ZONE reporting

Area, Owner and Zone Numbering (V32.0)

4 digit zone number at any program size level

Allow area, owner and zone numbers of 1 through 9,999 at all program size
levels

Limits remain on the number of area, owners and zones that may be
represented in a power flow case
These continue to be dependent on the dimensional capacity of PSSE
which is running
