Sherlock:

This mid two shot features Sherlock Holmes and Irene

Adler. Half the screen is in shadow, which shows that both
characters have dark sides/tendencies. The wallpaper is a
dark floral pattern, this makes the characters look
sophisticated and smart. Both are wearing dark elegant
and smart attire which blends with the dark background
emphasising their faces and hands making the viewer
focus more on their expressions and posture. Irene is
leaning on Sherlock, her pose is sexually confident,
looking into the camera. In the show she calls her self the
dominatrix which is reflected in this still, she has her
hands on her hips, strong body posture making her look
confident and giving her authority. Even though her pose
is very confident it isnt objectifying, as she isnt wearing
revealing clothing, she has a smart business wear dress
on. She has red lips and nails, the colour red is often
associated with power and strength as well as passion.
This emphasises the character of Irenes dominance.
Sherlock is looking down upon Irene, stereotypically when
the man looks down upon a woman it intimidates her,
makes her look weak and venerable but because of Irenes

powerful stance his look doesnt have this effect. He looks

as though he is analysing her, deducing her character, he
also looks at her as if she is something to be cautioned
with, that she is dangerous. Sherlocks body posture is
closed, which shows his distance to normality.
Defrocked Scene
Camera:
A range of close ups and extreme close
ups are used in this scene; they are used
to draw the viewer into whats happening
and to show reactions and emotions. In
this scene they are also used in Sherlocks
deductions, they are a freeze frame tracking slowly in or
out with his deductions in text. They are extreme closeups putting the viewer in a position that is almost

uncomfortable however they emphasise the attention to

detail made by Sherlock.

Low angle shots are used when Irene is confronting

Sherlock, these make her look intimidating and
dominating. It also puts the viewer at Sherlocks eye level
emphasising Irenes character. All the shots of Irene are
either slightly low angle or at eye level making her equal
to Sherlock, that she is a worthy rival/partner for him.
The 180 degree rule is broken in this scene as the
direction of view changes between characters. Particularly
when it switches to Johns view it makes and awkward and
uncomfortable change which emphasises his reaction to
the situation and how uncomfortable he feels.

Editing:
Continuity editing is used as the text in presented
chronologically emphasising real-time movement of the
narrative. The cuts are done to show either a characters
reaction or them speaking this allows the audience to see
the important reactions and emotions that the producer
wants the audience to see.

Sound:
There are ambient sounds in the scene when a person
walks across the floor you hear them walking, very
minimal but they add realism to the scene. The non
diegetic sound is reminiscent to time passing, it allows the
viewer to be in Sherlocks head almost as the sounds
match his deductions and where he looks. It adds
atmosphere to the scene and to Sherlocks deductions as
though you are hearing his deductions and the way he is
thinking allowing the audience to connect with him.
I know one of the police men, well I know what he likes
said by Irene. Shows she uses herself to get what she
wants, knows her way around the world, experienced. Her
tone is firm and she dismisses Sherlock goal however he is
able to manipulate her reactions to get what he wants.
Non diegetic piano music matches the camera work
emphasises looks and expressions pulled by the
characters.
The camera tracks in on Sherlock and the shows/Sherlocks
sound motif this shows to the audience that this is an
important moment for Sherlock.
Mise en Scene:
Sherlocks expression is confused as he cant read Irene
Adler. Irene wears nothing with her first meeting with

Sherlock, this shows her confidence with herself making

her a powerful force to be reckoned with. Both John and
Sherlock are shocked at her lack of clothes, both bemused
and in awe of her. Irenes hair is up and has a full face of
makeup, she looks very sophisticated and posh reflecting
her title of dominatrix. All her actions and body postures
are very sexually orientating in order to intimidate
Sherlock.
High key lighting is used to make it seem natural and safe.
The location is a sophisticated looking lounge area, very
posh dcor showing that Irene
must have some wealth to her
because of her upper-class living
space. A very light natural pallet
not to distract the audience from
the characters.
