1 annual architecture symposium in India
361 Conferencesince 2005

One of the oldest and most respected design forums in India, the
361 Conference is an initiative by Indian Architect & Builder, under the aegis
of Jasubhai Media, to inspire a truly relevant discussion on architecture.
The conference establishes a thought-exchange program with lectures and
discussions chronicling a multitude of ideas and innovations that have had a
significant impact on our habitats.
Through the years, the conference has connected various disciplines of
design by offering dialogue opportunities across essential themes like
Design and Informal Cities, Earth Matters, Imagining Urban Futures, Material
Innovations, New Spirit in Architecture and Architecture of Purpose.
As an eclectic, thought-provoking and egalitarian platform, 361 in its
seventh edition will continue to articulate the power of thoughts and ideas,
thus capturing the progressive nature of design and creating in its wake, a
forum for the emerging and influential practices in the Indian subcontinent.

The 361 Degrees Conference will remain with me

as one of the most invigoratingly interesting and
stimulating forums I have experienced. The choice of
subject matter and speakers was remarkable, hugely
explorative and, ultimately, cogent.
Andre Tammes, Chairman, LDP, UK & Australia.

The Speakers, The Partners, The Associations
These presentations also opened up some critical thinking within me,
making me wonder what are we all doing as a profession? I wondered
if, we as a profession, are not focused on beach houses and second
homes, and neat little tourist sites, or are we facing the avalanche of
urbanisation straight on. Will history push us aside as the court jesters
of the rich and idle? While these are critical thoughts of our profession
and my own work, they are not critical of reactions of your conference.
Your conference laid out things in front of me that caused me to think!
What better compliment could one pay of your efforts!

Exploring alternative prospects of spatiality and integration of concerns

such as economy, functionality, informality in urban fabric and typology,
the fourth edition of the Conference concentrated on serious aspects
of informal settlements and its scope of improvisation or expansion. To
understand the implications of the issues, the discussants participated
in a walk through Dharavi, Asias largest slum. An icon lecture by Pritzker
Laureate Richard Meier concluded the conference.

With multiple ways and means, multilateral approaches and multidimensional practices, architects and
designers in India, and the world, are venturing into unprecedented realms with an intense understanding
of the new age. The conference attempted to understand and debate these versatile directions and the
generated chaos as an ambigous whole guided by four tracks namely Systems & Technology, Objects
& Experiences, Paracentric Practices and Innovating@Grassroots. Extensions of the Conference involved
screening of the film Doshi by Hundredhands and a bookstore by ANDBS.

As communities continually negotiate their destiny in an increasingly global world, design

becomes a reflection of the cultures architects create. In the haze of isms, the mania of the
virtual and a landscape of failed utopias, the conference aimed to provoke and rethink the reason
why architecture is relevant and what is relevant architecture? Icon lecturers such as Peter Rich
and Charles Correa set the premise of discussion. An exhibition representing Interpretations of
Sustainability in the Indian Context was held concurrently and the film Vistara was also screened.

19-21 february 2014 : Nehru Centre, MumbaI

Over the past decade, the issue of identity
has been at the centre of many
discourses - personal and public. In the age
of Google and an intellectual flattening of
the world, why does this idea still obsess us?
Dont we aspire to live as global citizens?
Dont we think that a reference to the past is
regressive? Dont we talk about avant-garde
and wish to move beyond our time?
In the context of architecture, as we
move further in the 21 st century, we find
incredibly diverse and individual trajectories
of academia, practice and building. Within
this diversity, we find a consistent struggle
by individuals and groups to anchor
ideas to their appropriate roots. The
2014 conference will focus on people and
practices whose fundamentals mediate the
impact of these statements and have an
investment in the idea of identity; whose
work takes a critical position on this issue.
