Student Fees
NB
No cash or cheques will be accepted at any of the offices of the University from 1 December 2008. Cash
can, however, still be paid into the bank account of the University at any ABSA branch or at any South
African Post Office.
The government is currently investigating the policy regarding the subsidy for foreign students. The attention of such students is drawn to the fact
that prescribed student fees could increase substantially in the future. The University reserves the right to charge fees in certain countries in the
currency of that country.
1. Prescribed student fees (2010)

Fees are valid for the 2010 academic year only.

Prescribed student fees include registration, examinations (excluding special, aegrotat and supplementary examinations) and admission to
discussion classes.
a) Minimum amount payable on registration

A minimum amount is payable on registration in respect of each module or paper for which the student registers. The minimum amount payable on registration is dependent on the number of individual study units for which the student registers.
A minimum initial amount is payable with each registration.
The minimum amount payable on registration will be forfeited should the relevant study unit be cancelled.
Note that compulsory miscellaneous fees where applicable, are also payable on registration. These fees include the levy for students in foreign
countries and levies for additional study material.
After payment of the initial amount on registration, the outstanding balance must be paid before the relevant dates.
b) Prescribed student fees

NB o The LEVY FOR STUDENTS IN FOREIGN COUNTRIES must be paid in addition to the
minimum initial payment on registration
o Students must be in possession of a student number BEFORE registrations can be processed or fees paid or deposited into the
ABSA Bank account.
o The fees for all fourth-level modules will be charged on honours level.

4. Legal fees
Any legal fees that arise due to actions taken by Unisa to collect unpaid student fees will be for the account of students.
Cancellation on failure to pay fees
(abstract from Part 1 of the Calendar)
If students fail to pay any outstanding amount on their account before the relevant date, their registration for the respective study units will be
summarily cancelled by the University, and no appeal against such cancellation will be considered. In respect of each cancelled study unit, students will
forfeit fees in accordance with Registration cancellation dates. Thereafter, they will be registered only for the number of study units for which they had
paid in full prior to the dates as indicated.

Please note that this rule will strictly be adhered to from 2009.

outside the RSA must pay the additional compulsory
levy on registration:

Category A: Africa

Category B: Rest of the world
Students who, after registration, change their postal
address to a foreign address or examination centre
to a foreign examination centre will be liable to
immediately pay the foreign levy as specified.
The levy for foreign students is not transferable and
also not refundable, this rule also applies to the
change of address from foreign countries to South
Africa.
Students who are registering for a masters or a
doctors degree and who are resident in an overseas
country, (countries in Africa excluded) must annualy
pay this additional levy in addition to the minimum
initial payment (and the registration levy and/or the
levy on students in foreign countries, if applicable).
The levy for foreign students and the levy payable
by overseas masters and doctoral students are not
transferable and also not refundable.
Students who are liable for the library card fees are:
- students who apply for a card for the first time
- students who previously had a card but need a new
one
- students whos previous card is lost or damaged.
Students who are in possession of a library card and
reregister do not need to apply or pay for a library
card the old card will be activated automatically
upon registration.
If Yes is indicated at on the registration form
with regard to the library card, the card fee will
automatically be payable upon registration as part of
the minimum payment

6. Bursary holders and students whose studies are underwritten by their employers
or other institutions (No letter of guarantee/intent will be accepted by the
University)
Students in this category must pay at least the relevant prescribed initial payment on registration, together with any compulsory miscellaneous fees
(eg the levy for foreign students).
Fees must be paid before the relevant closing date(s).
Accounts are issued only to students and not to any third party or other institutions.
A quotation of fees payable may be issued on request, which you may hand to the relevant institution before registration.
7. Financial Aid

National Students Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS)

Students may apply for a NSFAS loan for assistance with study fees if they meet inter alia the following criteria:

must be a South African citizen;

studying towards a first tertiary qualification or studying for a second tertiary qualification if such qualification is necessary in order to
practice in your chosen career (eg. PGCE);
able to demonstrate a potential for academic success;
financially needy.
Government employees
People employed in Government Departments may apply for assistance with study fees if they meet inter alia the following criteria:
----
they must be in the direct employ of the SA Government or a permanent member of the SANDF;
they can apply for themselves, or sponsor their spouses/children/guardians;
loan instalment may not exceed 25% of gross income;

9. Method of payment

NB In case of electronic transfer please ensure that the reference field is completed correctly. NO cash or cheques will be accepted at

Debit Cards
Debit card payments are only accepted if you register in person at Unisa in
Pretoria or Florida or at one of the Regional service centres (see page 9).
Credit Cards
Credit Cards are restricted to Visa and Mastercard. All the particulars
required under Particulars of payment on the registration form, must be
supplied. If you are paying by credit card then the CV number must also
be given. The CV number is the last three digits which appear AFTER your
credit card number on the reverse side of the credit card. The card-holders
signature is also required on the registration form. (If your application is sent
by post, you are NOT required to send your card to the University. However,
a photostat copy of BOTH sides of the credit card must accompany the
registration form.)

Money orders
Bank drafts
Postal orders, money orders and bank drafts should be made payable to
Unisa.
Telegraphic Money
Order (TMO)
Student must state surname, first name, address, student number (if known)
and for what purpose this payment is made. The TMO must be addressed to
Unisa, UNISARAND for delivery and payment by the Unisarand post office.
These methods of payment will only be

accepted if posted to the University.
Bank deposits
Bank deposits can only be done at a bank in South Africa:

a.
if you already have a student number;
b.
in respect of student fees, examination fees (supplementary, special or
aegrotat fees) and exemption fees, but no library charges;
c.
at any branch of ABSA (In the case of electronic transfers please
ensure that the reference field is completed correctly).
d.
provided the deposit slip is correctly filled in as follows:
