"Winter is the time for comfort, for

- Edith Sitwell
One Life and a Million Stars (Part 1)
Caroline Wei | Writer
The sun felt freezing on her face. Perhaps it was
the winds fault, or perhaps it was the raw, sandpaper texture of her throat, or most likely it was the
thorn of guilt and bitterness buried deep in her
heart.
The point was, Chyna was very, very cold, one
frozen figure in a landscape of summer green and
warm city lights. Chyna stopped running abruptly,
her worn suitcase swinging from her hands. She
swallowed down her tears for what felt like the millionth time since she left. It was the right thing to
do. It was the best choice. Wasnt it?
Whatever it was, right choice or not, it was too
late to turn back. Rebellious, Chynas mind replayed the memories of the past day. Chyna Snow,
the letter had said. This is a very rare opportunity,
and wed like to have you. Theyd called her talented. Skilled. Ready to be made into a legend.
Theyd said it was a once-in-a-lifetime chance.
Theyd said that any girl would kill for this. This
dream job.
But the problem was, Chyna didnt know what
kind of job they were offering her. What kind of
people they were. Chyna didnt know what she was
trying to find. She had acted impulsively and recklessly, and even if she wanted to go back home, her
parents would beat her senseless anyway.
See, the letter had mentioned space. And time
travel.
It was a secret government organization, and
when Chyna found the official-looking letter in the
mailbox, it had specifically said it was for a Chyna
Snow and for her eyes only. Of course, Chyna had
heeded it and didnt show it to her parents.
And this letter...it had been something special,
and it had stirred a place in her heart. All her life,
since she was a small child, she had been fascinated
by astronauts and their heroic deeds and exploits.
She had plotted to zoom to space in a rocket all her
own. She had dreamed of seeing stars with
her own eyes, and see beautiful nebulas close
up. Chyna was a very science-y type of person, and
she often thought long and hard of all the possibili-

ties of the complicated, wonderful thing called time.

Her mother and father, Tania and Hermann
Grimes, had discouraged such thinking. How could
such worthless fantasies ever help you in life?
Tania had always asked, eyes narrowed. And whenever Chyna dared to press on, Hermann beat her
with a switch.
It was a hard life for a girl with dreams.
Chynas feet moved almost robotically and
halted at a bus stop. They seemed to groan with pain
and agony, bruised from the long walk and many
runs its owner had taken. Chyna sat down on a
bench, its chilly metal adding to the ice inside her.
The sky above was black velvet sprinkled with glittering stardust.
Back again to Memory Lane, unwanted remembrances playing in Chynas head. She saw herself,
excited and uncertain, packing her belongings, stuffing all her warmest and most favorite clothes in one
suitcase. She saw herself on her knees, staring out
her smudged, dirty window. She saw a scared face.
Mostly, Chyna saw her parents, her wiry, thin
mother and her fiery eyes, her burly, cold-mannered
father, glaring at a dark-haired, dark-eyed girl sitting
at the dinner table, talking timidly and quietly about
her desires. About outer space and everything in it.
About possibilities humankind had dreamed of but
was yet to accomplish. Her. She saw her mother
Tania screaming, red-faced, calling her rude names,
and her father with his switch, gold eyes flashing
with fury. She heard herself shrieking in pain, and
the anger and rage rising afterward.
Miss? Chyna gasped and looked up, startled.
The bus had arrived and she hadnt even noticed.
The busdriver was staring at her a bit funny. Are
you getting aboard? Chyna stood up and clutched
her suitcase, pulling her beanie low over her eyes,
nodding her head slightly. The busdriver was a pinkhaired teenager with gold hoops hooked into her
ears. Her eyes were overly outlined with a heavy
black and her long nails were painted neon green.
Wherere your parents? she asked. Chyna was
afraid of this question. Theyve sent me off to run

an errand, she said, inventing wildly. I shouldnt

make them worry, so Ive gotta be quick about it.
The teen frowned at her, a silver ring looped inside
one of her pale lips. If youre running away, Ive
been there, she said, almost gently, as if reading
Chynas mind. She was silent, and didnt try to encourage Chyna to turn back home. Chyna feigned a
surprised, appalled look. Running away? she
asked, forcing one of her eyebrows to lift in an innocent way. Never. My parents treat me most gently.
Liar.
The teenagers lips quirked. Okay then, she
agreed. Hop on.
Grateful, Chyna made her way up the bus stairs
and plopped down in a seat. The bus was empty.
Do you know anywhere called the J&B Auto Factory? Chyna called up front. The letter had informed Chyna that to protect their workers identities and the organizations own, their code name
was J&B Auto Factory, when really it was GATS,
Galactic Activity and Time Studies. The teens
laugh echoed in the empty vehicle as it started moving. No, honey. There isnt any auto factory round
here unless you travel somewhere uptown. Us
downtowners got no auto expert to go to. Chynas
heart froze over. Downtown? What city was she in?
Shed technically left her house yesterday, but spent
most of that day and the next hiding out in the barn
near her house, and when shed finally gotten the
guts to leave Oxon Hill, it had been midday. Shed
walked, then. And now? GATS was in Washington
D.C.! What if shed traveled further than shed
thought? She had taken a long time...it wouldve
taken approximately two hours to walk to Washington D.C., but Chyna had dragged and dawdled,
afraid and uncertain and tired.
Chyna was afraid to ask it, but she did. Okay,
she admitted. I ran away from home. I need to
know what city Im in. The teenager laughed again.
I knew youd fess up, she said almost cheerfully.
Ive done it a couple times myself. Youre in
Washington D.C., the big city.

Campus Crisis
Helmmy Chiang| Writer

Looking across the mall, anyone could see that

the world is filled with technology that has undoubtedly impacted many lives. Absorbing the mall activity, the main technology any person could see are cell
phones or to be specific, smart phones. Technology
usually makes the economy rise and most of it serves
good purposes, but sometimes people overload on
technology, and this is dangerous.
Most parents want to trust their children with the
responsibility of having their own cell phone. Knowing that they can contact their children anywhere and
at anytime is soothing knowledge to parents. While, it
is nice to know where your children are, parents need
to make certain that their children use smart phones in
a productive way. Research has shown that teens are
usually the people in this world that misuse their
smart phones without knowing the consequences.
Smart phones to the world do more harm work and
productivity and also is a distraction on task. Consequences for using smart phones vary and usually depend on the situation, but the cost of using a smart
phone is not usually positive at all.
The world is filled with technology and the most
popular technology right now is the cell phones. The
most common use for smart phones is texting. Texting
is a good way of communicating to friends and family, but if used incorrectly it can be devastating. Technology has changed in the past decade, and cell phone
evolution is at the top of these changes. In the past,
technology was not a big problem in life and people
did not have these technological distractions. Nowadays, technology has advanced and people use it to
get closer to each other. Friends and family usually
use text as a way to communicate, but sometimes
abuse of texting can negatively impact a relationship.
Families might not realize anything at first with texting, but soon no one is socially interacting with one
another. Interacting with each other is key to keeping
a healthy relationship with a friend or family member.
Texting each other or being on a phone when every-

one should be intermingling could have dangerous

health effects. Technology has been a distraction for
these past years and will continue to be a distraction.
Following these trends, cell phones will continue to be
revolutionized and become even more addicting, especially to teens.
Excessive use of technology brings with it many
consequences that people are unaware of. Many teens
in the world are being devastated by technology because they are spending too much time using their
phones. Little by little, the consequences become appalling and major havoc happens. Overuse of phones is
bad for the human body and people who overuse
phones develop attention blindness. Attention blindness is when people cannot concentrate and have a
slow reaction time. Teens that stay up late at night using their phones tend to not finish their homework.
This leads to not understanding school material. Without understanding anything in school, teens would earn
dreadful grades. Bad grades are not the worst thing that
could happen to a teen that has attention blindness. Car
accidents are a major problem to teens that overuse
technology because of slow reaction time while driving
a car. Driving around with a cell phone makes the user
blind to local cues, and accidents happen. The biggest
reasons that cell phone are a distraction is because they
distract a drivers attention, increase reaction time, and
reduce visual field attention. Overexposure to cell
phones has very severe consequences in life; overuse
of cell phones should not be taken as a joke but taken
seriously as a matter of life or death.
Cell phones will continue to develop and teens
will continue to use them. The most important thing is
to remember the consequences when being sucked in
by the world of technology. Technology is helpful in
many ways, but in the end everyone in the world must
know that overusing cell phones is dangerous. Attention blindness can lead to students failing to properly
learn, resulting in them becoming less productive
members of society, and it can lead to car accidents,
causing loss of life. The importance of moderating
technology usage is unquestionable. Technology is
designed to help people, but we have to help ourselves
and not let the technology in our world control us.

Eliza. If youre listening, Ill tell you the truth.

Silence.

Eliza Duncan has an inescapable lethargy. It attacks her at random like a clock that goes off without
an alarm. Its as if shes never awake. However, there
will be tiny cracks within her ever-looming drowsiness, and in those instances, Eliza will always have
her hands on some sort of contraption, tinkering with
it. She can do things from sewing cloths to melding
metals, but the end result is always the same: a toy.

Im being hospitalized again, but my parents

cant pay for the medical bills on their current jobs. So
theyre breaking their backs to work more for my hospital bill.

Eliza. Im going to be gone for a while, so youll

have to eat tiramisu alone now, okay? Taylor mumbles often, but this time she talked loud and clear.
However, Eliza was still dazed, so she didnt hear
Taylor.

I got better. But now Im deteriorating Im

fading, Eliza.

Mmm. Okay. Eliza just mutters about flying

flowers, her eyes not fixed outside the window. Taylor glances at Eliza, her eyelids heavy, but not from
tiredness. The tears are inching out of her eyes, threatening to destroy the strength that Taylor had built. Her
fleeting fingers play with the keychain ice-cream
plush that Eliza made for her for her first discharge.

The gate to the zoo is unlocked.

What? I thought- I thought you were better.
Eliza looks up at Taylor, her eyes alert.

Silence.
The two girls embrace each other, oblivious to the
other people getting on the bus.
Eliza stays with Taylor until Taylor reaches the
hospital, their hands tightly interlocked. Taylor forbids
Eliza to visiting her for the next week. But that doesnt
keep Eliza from gripping Taylors hand; its her last
resort from keeping Taylor from going in so early.
Going in meant being stuck there for a while, or not
even coming out at all

Homemade
Benson Wu|Writer
The thing that I love is homemade food. Homemade food is the best type of food. You know what is
in it and also you can make it as healthy and tasty as
you want it to be. You could make anything you
wanted in your own house and be proud and satisfied
with your own creations.

Eventually, Taylor walks into the Kingdom of

Death, her future dictated by her illness. Eliza immediately sets out to find a job in order to pay for Taylors
hospital funds. She quickly finds one, a waitress at a
well-known restaurant. Although Eliza has to work
hard despite her constant drowsiness draping over her
shoulders like a heavy winter jacket in the summer,
the pay is generous enough to convince Eliza to keep
her job.
Eliza continues on like this, working all day, and
going home to tinker with whatever her hands can
obtain. Along with her stress, the amount of toys shes
made has drastically increased.
Its been a week. Eliza walks into the hospital
lobby, her eyes searching for any trace of Taylor. But
before she can get to the front desk, she collapses. And
the ever-looming sleep envelops her, making her
world dark and silent peaceful.
Eliza Duncan. Twenty-three years old. Suffering
from drowsiness. She should be fine. The doctor
looks over her body, as if searching for the answer.
Wheres Taylor?
