Major cold weather outbreak this weekend

Significant winter storm early next week, mainly
north and west of Interstate 95.
Hazards and Impacts:
Cold temperatures and wind chill values: An arctic airmass will remain in place through
Sunday. Temperatures and wind chills will be brutally cold tonight into Sunday.

The coldest weather will occur tonight and Sunday. Despite abundant sunshine, a frigid day
is in store on Sunday, with less wind then today. Low temperatures tonight will range from
minus 10 up in the Poconos to around 8 above near the Delaware Atlantic Coast.
Wind chill temperatures this cold will be dangerous to people and pets. Property damage
due to frozen water pipes is also possible when temperatures get this cold.
A wind chill warning is in effect for the Poconos and Sussex County, New Jersey until 1 PM
Sunday. Wind chill values of 20 to 30 below zero are expected in the warning area. A wind
chill advisory is in effect for the remainder of the region until 9 AM Sunday. Wind chill
values of 10 to 20 below zero are expected in the advisory area.
Winter storm threat early next week: A storm system will affect the region starting
Monday afternoon and continuing into Monday night and Tuesday. Significant amounts of
snow and ice are possible, mainly north and west of Interstate 95. The Poconos, Lehigh
Valley and Northwestern New Jersey will see precipitation stay as snow and ice the longest
and have the highest accumulations. Over 4 inches of snow is possible in these areas with
up to inch of ice. Most places will change over to rain on Tuesday. However, the
changeover will occur later the further north and west you go.
There is also a flooding threat due to the potential for heavy rainfall.

Additional information regarding next weeks storm

There is the potential for river flooding and a small
chance of coastal flooding.
Inland flooding will depend on the amount of rainfall
and how quickly temperatures warm up and
snow/icing changes over to rain. If that changeover
occurs more quickly, we will receive more rain. And if
that happens, then there is the potential for minor to
moderate river flooding, as well as localized poor
drainage flooding.
