Domestic wastewater treatment in the Philippines has quite became a problem in water
pollution. In the Philippines, only 10% of wastewater is treated while 58% of the groundwater
is contaminated. Imagine that this contaminated groundwater is used as your households
potable drinking water source and your children and loved ones are drinking it.
Hi! My name is Rene Rey Mondia and I am representing HydroponiX Corp, a team of
engineers who have set out to solve this problem that affects an over 92 million filipinos and
economic losses of about 78 billion annually due to poor sanitation. So why does this
problem happen? Well. Direct discharge of greywater to the ground causes great damage to
the nearby body of water as well as contamination of the groundwater. Since household
water treatment and centralized facilities are rare, domestic wastewater is discharged
anywhere without treatment.
The good news is, with proper domestic waste water treatment processes employed, these
problems can be prevented. However, current domestic wastewater treatment here in the
Philippines does not provide concrete treatment for greywater discharge and if so would
need bulky and large equipment thus requiring more land area and thus cost.
We have created a wastewater treatment equipment that is a modified nutrient film
hydroponics system that is effective, compact, and fits perfectly to the comfort of your
backyard. The household simply installs the system to their piping lines and the household
effluent is passed through to the hydroponic troughs, being able to reduce the contaminants
in the water to safe levels. The system does not only provide water treatment but also serves
as a vertical and modifiable garden that could be planted with the plant of your choice.
Compared to the other household processes available in the market, our system provides a
unique, chemical-free, more space saving and more modifiable system than any other
treatment means out there, We have currently a working prototype that is a standalone
equipment but our final product will include the necessary mini pre-processing and post
processing equipment included.
We plan to capitalize on this by partnering with local government units (LGUs) under the
mandate of DENR according to the Clean Water Act of 2004 and also with private water
treatment service firms to get our hydroponics system right in every Filipinos backyard.
Following our current results in our experiments, we plan to team up with other researchers
in the college of engineering to provide our system with fully automated and an electronic
process control system for our treatment. Were currently seeking to seed around 50000
PhP to conduct further tests, including the phyto-toxicity tests and food-grade tests and also
for prototype improvements. Again, my name is Ren Mondia representing HydroponiX Corp,
please come visit us at our booth and thank you for your time.

Executive Summary
Domestic wastewater treatment in the Philippines has quite became a problem in water
pollution. In the Philippines, only 10% of wastewater is treated while 58% of the groundwater
is contaminated. It is also a fact that only 5% of the total population is connected to a sewer
network in the Philippines. Direct discharge of raw sewage to the ground a to the ground
causes great damage to the surrounding body of water as well as contamination of the
groundwater. Since domestic wastewater treatment facilities are rare in the Philippines
(centralized or not), domestic wastewater is discharged without treatment. Some estimates
point to household wastewater as contributing as much as 60% of water pollution. Economic
losses because of poor sanitation are reported to reach PhP 78 billion annually. With this
current situation in the Philippines, a design for domestic wastewater treatment will be of
great value the environment.

In this project, the contaminants in the domestic wastewater specifically grey water is to be
removed by integrating a modified nutrient-film technique hydroponic system for wastewater
treatment and reuse. The target will be urban areas in the Philippine that lack the
wastewater treatment for greywater namely wastewater from kitchen sinks, dishwashers,
bathroom sinks, tubs and showers. The project will include a wastewater treatment
equipment that is a modified nutrient film hydroponics system that is effective for wastewater
treatment, compact, and fits perfectly to the comfort of the Filipinos backyard. The
household simply installs the system to their piping lines and the household effluent is
passed through to the hydroponic troughs, being able to reduce the contaminants in the
water to safe levels. The system does not only provide water treatment but also serves as a
vertical and modifiable garden that could be planted with the plant of your choice. Compared
to the other household processes available in the market, our system provides a unique,
chemical-free, more space saving and more modifiable system than any other treatment
means out there. The equipment utilizes the power of natural systems being able to
remediate the organic and filter out inorganic contaminants in the greywater. A combination
of the concepts of hydroponics and water treatment sets the technology apart from the rest
available in the market. The equipment used in the process provides not only the use of
environmentally-safe materials but also free from harmful chemicals. The hydroponics
system only uses mechanical parts such as troughs, pipelines, and pumps as well as the
use of plants thus making it less hazardous to use. Furthermore, with the dawn of green
engineering and agricultural technologies, being able to use the hydroponics system is an
innovation to vertical gardening making it having a great social impact not only to the
community but also for the future generations. It is a prize to hold for the future for modern
homes.
