Maribel Toro Rojas

Cuarto ao Letras

Anne Walker wrote The color purple in 1982 and his film adaptation by de Director
Steven Spielberg was released in 1985. Spielberg tried to stay true to the story told in the
book of Anne Walker, this did not prevent this will add elements of his style as a director
and film producer.
The story the film was not about slavery, the story the film was about
transformation: transformation a woman in a thing for perception the men; metamorphosis
of a girl into a woman who corresponds to mature quickly to face a cruel world built by men
who are part of her life: her father and her husband.
The story the film was not about slavery because it is set in the early twentieth
century and at that time already he had been abolished slavery. The main theme is the
relationship of power exercised by men in relation to women, domination, physical and
mental abuse.
The presence of racism in relation black and white not evidence in a plot of film,
but if sexism is present, oppression of women and racism in terms of preferences for one
or the other youth and beauty. The topic relating to the discrimination of women, to be
regarded as a simple object of possession: father abuse/husband abuse.
Cellie - main character in the movie-, step from being mistreated and sexually
abused by her father, to be brutally beaten by her husband, who preferred to Nettie Cellies sister for being younger and beauty-, despite the abusive father claimed his
possession on the Nettie, and simply he yielded to Cellie , as if it were a good change, a
negotiable item .

Cellie however abused by her father, she conceived with him two children (rape /
incest other main theme of a film),which her father took them off and gave birth and sold
the other families; then up to the role of mother of the sons of her abusive husband, which
evidenced his strength of character and ability to be reborn from its own ashes like a
phoenix.
The objectification of women is perhaps the main theme of the movie, they are
simply designed as trophies, as objects of desire, as properties of which may be provided ,
regardless of the dignity, desires , will, or freedom of immanent choice every human being,
and in this case especially women. Cancellation of dignity, self-esteem and individuality of
women are simply available because objects fit only to satisfy needs.

The other main theme of the film is a symbolist about color purple represents:
a)

Transformation of Cellie, in the sense that it as far passed from girl to woman,
begins to recognize herself and consequently recognized in others, and to
realize that what happens in your life is not desirable, therefore should be
fighting for her freedom. In the movie is very interesting evidence that change,
through the narrator begins the girl, and then there is a transformation of the
speaker's voice, which implies that this has already been transformed into a
grown woman - Cellie was represented in its role adult by Whopi Golberg- .

b)

Strength and Renaissance: Cellie is a woman with an inexhaustible strength,

which allows it to support the path that lies ahead and even retrace his own
steps. Rise from its ashes like a phoenix.

c) Survival: their need to survive in adversity have allowed you to mask this
inherent feeling in obedience. Obedience need to survive.
d) Faith and patience: In Cellie saying goes that "there is no evil that lasts forever
or body that resists ".

e) Hope that at some point you will hear from her sister Nettie, hope over who built
the strength of its existence. Through these letters the grief and anguish of the
main character are decanted, allow you to cling to life, and above all keep hope.
