ACKNOWLEDGMENTS
Each chapter in this Handbook is the product of thoughtful research and analysis,
and we offer our sincere thanks to the authors for their hard work and commitment to
excellence. Thanks to their efforts, this collection will clearly serve as a central resource
for many years to come. A particular word of appreciation is owed to Harold Perkin, a
British social historian who passed away on October 16, 2004 at the age of 77, shortly
after submitting his chapter for this publication. We are honored to present his final
research product in this volume, and extend our sincere condolences to his family.
We are also grateful for the generous encouragement we have received from our professional colleagues and friends, many of whom continue to inspire us and our research.
Finally, and most importantly, our families have been constant sources of support and
understanding throughout the long and sometimes tedious process of editing. And to
the next generation of higher education students and scholars, we send our best wishes.
