NEW SERVICE DEVELOMPENT

43 Asklepios Clinics in Germany Standardize their Hospital Information System with Agfa
HealthCare's ORBIS
Asklepios Kliniken Verwaltungsgesellschaft (AKV), which represents more than 50% of the
turnover of the Asklepios group, the largest private hospital group in Germany, has chosen Agfa
HealthCare's ORBIS as the standard hospital information system (HIS) for 43 clinics. In
addition, all 43 clinics will use ORBIS RIS as their radiology information system of choice. The
implementation of the project will start in 2014.
As part of its HIS strategy, AKV identified one single supplier to improve administration and
workflows as well as to simplify training. Following a competitive search for a solution, AKV
selected Agfa HealthCare's ORBIS, an innovative and comprehensive hospital-wide clinical and
administrative information system that manages and monitors all patient-oriented processes:
medical, nursing, administrative and business. The agreement also includes ORBIS RIS, which
streamlines the entire radiology workflow.

Dynamic health systems and new technologies: eHealth solutions at local and regional
levels
the Asklepios Future Hospital Programme in Hamburg, Germany, is an innovation management
programme primarily led by the industry. It provides valuable insights into the pros and cons of
major private sector involvement in the provision of healthcare through ICT-based solutions.
The Asklepios Hospital Barmbek in Hamburg is part of the Asklepios Kliniken Hamburg
Germany has a decentralised healthcare system where each of the 16 States (Lnder) shares the
responsibility for hospitals and clinics with the federal (central) government (namely, the Federal
Ministry of Health and various other ministries and agencies). There are also numerous non-

profit organisations involved in the provision of healthcare. The health system is financed by
statutory health insurance and private health insurance. There is no referral system, so patients
can be treated by the doctor of their choice. Doctors work either in hospitals or in private
practice. The hospitals, both public and private, are mainly non-profit institutions. Sources:

of Hamburg. Internationally, the Asklepios Group consists of a network of 110 health facilities,
of which 96 are in Germany, 6 in the USA and 8 in Greece. In 2005, Microsoft, Intel and
Asklepios started the eHealth initiative Future Hospital in which Barmbek Hospital acts as the
main showroom and testing area for the individual projects under this programme. Overall, the
programme aims at improving the quality of medical care by introducing a technological and
procedural infrastructure for a comprehensive healthcare network optimising communication and
information processes. It also aims at supporting integrated medical care and at increasing costefficiency through automation of manual processes, increased transparency and relief from
administrative duties for physicians and nursing staff. Individual projects of the programme
include: (i) Doctors portal (Arztportal) improving communication of external general
practitioners with the hospital; (ii) Implementation of dashboards to visualise the current status
of patients, rooms and equipment in order to speed up the treatment process, and improve
efficiency of planning and use; (iii) Mobile visitations including WLAN access for the medical
staff to patient data, information and documents from clinic data sources at all times and in any
location; (iv) Use of Radio Frequency Identification Technology in treatment and logistics
processes in the hospital. In 2010, the Programme is still constantly trying to set new standards
for quality and efficiency of healthcare.

Green Hospital
The Asklepios Hospital Group have signed an agreement to create their first project in the
German healthcare sector to comprehensively address environmental issues. The renovation and
expansion of one of the hospitals owned by Asklepios in Hamburg, Germany, will be their pilot

hospital in Europe entirely planned and designed on ecological principles leading to significant
energy savings and increasing energy efficiency. This Green Hospital project is based on a
multi-dimensional approach: the combination of ecology, economy and the well-being of people
in a hospital. It will thus be laying an important milestone for the future of hospital-building.

The green hospital is an initiative the Asklepios Hospital Group, and its partners in the green
hospital program, The approach of the model to the green hospital of the future is there focused
on health and medical care. Issues regarding energy or specific architectureal and building issues
are integrated in that approach. The realization that mankind is only a part of sorrounding
ecosystems and that wellbeing depends significantly on the state it is in, represents a new
awareness that is supported and promoted by a broad political, ecological and socio-structural
consensus. The green hospital divides an environmental awara hospital into four key areas:

Green Building
Green Healthcare Information & Technology
Greaan Health and Care
Green Patient

Environmental sustainability strategies

Environmental sustainability strategies are at the core of such transformation. Care providers are
increasingly convinced that such an approach makes good business sense, protects our planets
natural resources and helps to provide an unrivalled standard of care. In terms of financial
benefits, a recent benchmark report from Practice Green health analyzed data from 223 hospitals.
It showed that these institutions could save $11m (7.1m) through green initiatives, such as
reducing waste and energy use. Its little wonder that 92% of these hospitals had appointed an
executive champion for environmental issues. Enacting environmental sustainability projects is
something Philips has a justifiably strong reputation for, especially in terms of designing
buildings and providing technology, such as our imaging systems but also through our lighting
innovations. In the German city of Barmbek, the Asklepios Clinic has reduced its energy
consumption by a fifth after replacing its fluorescent tubes with LEDs, which are kinder to the
environment because of reduced CO2 emissions and less likely to develop faults. The project has
also led to a hospital budget saving of more than 164,000 (116,230).
