Course Requirements:
You will be expected to work assignments in a timely manner in order to stay consistent
with the course requirements. Assignments are covered in the Assignment section (last
page) and are to be completed using the guidelines from the School of Business Writing
Manual posted in Blackboard. All assignments, other than chapter questions, are to be
uploaded to Blackboard on or before the due date, no later than 6:00pm.
First Day of Class On the first day of class you will have completed the reading for
Chapter 1 and Chapter 2. You will also have completed the homework assignment that
is due on the first class night. Your homework for the chapter questions will be printed
and brought to class each session to be used for discussion and participation purposes
as a means to cover the chapter material. The printed homework will then be submitted
after discussion for grading purposes. See separate handout posted in Blackboard
regarding writing requirements for homework assignments.
Specific course requirements are as follows:
Homework Questions and Problems Individual chapter questions and problems
have been assigned and are to be submitted on the due date as per the Assignment
schedule. As mentioned above, the chapter question responses are to be printed,
brought to class, and used for class discussion purposes prior to grading. The chapter
problems will be uploaded to Blackboard on the assigned date, no later than 6:00pm.
(SLO 1.1-5.2)
Chapter questions are assigned to illustrate the students knowledge of the chapter
material. Points are assigned for successful answers and also for the quality of the
writing the questions require the student to put in their own words the answers and not
merely copy from the chapter material as presented. Problems are assigned to
examine the students ability to apply the concepts to a calculation-based situation and
illustrates the students ability to think critically about the topic and concepts.
Worksheet Problems Individual Excel worksheet problems have been assigned and
are to be completed using the Build a Model Excel file which is available online at the
textbook website. These problems are to be uploaded to Blackboard when due per the
assignment schedule, no later than 6:00pm on the due date. (SLO 1.1-5.2)
Analysis Project: At the conclusion of the course the student will have worked within a
two or three-person team to develop a complete analysis of a company and prepare a
written report of that analysis. A separate handout describes the analysis project.
During the course there are specific parts of the analysis that are due and points are to
be earned based on these submissions. Review the assignment schedule for these
dates. (SLO 1.1-5.2)
Final Exam: On the final night of class, there will be a two-hour open book/open
notes final exam given covering the concepts and analysis learned throughout the
course. All material used throughout the course will be available for use during the
exam. The total points available for this final exam will be 100 points.(SLO 1.1-5.2)
Page 3

Course Syllabus, Continued

Red Company Homework & Annual Report Project: A separate workbook format
text has been selected that involves an Excel model to be used to compute and
evaluate various applications of financial analysis, call Red Company. The five chapter
homework problems sets are due on the due date as identified and are worth 10-20
points each. Additionally, there is an Annual Report Project that utilizes one of the four
companies contained in the workbook, with completion worth 100 points. See separate
handout on the nature and requirements of the Annual Report Project. (SLO 1.1-5.2)
Participation: Due to the nature of the case analysis process and the various points of
view held by different individuals there will be class discussion time devoted to the
cases and problems as they are due and submitted. Participation points will be earned
based on these discussions. The total participation points available are 35 points (5
each all sessions of class except the last.) The quality of the participation will be
weighted over the quantity. (SLO 1.1 5.2)
Quality participation is not (for example):
Restating another students point using different words.
Consistently asking yes or no questions that do not further discussion.
Quality participation is (for example):
Any statement or question that initiates further/deeper discussion.
Presenting and developing a new point of view regarding an issue within the
case or project.
Academic Standards:
Homework and Overall Grades:
Please note that the assignments require you to think about, as well as apply, what you
have learned. If the problem asks you to comment or to analyze, you should take that
instruction seriously. Points assigned for each problem include achievement based on
the accuracy of the information / answers as well as the quality of the presentation.
You are expected to submit professional quality assignments that are reflective of a
Masters level student.
Course Etiquette:
1.
There is no substitute for being prepared and completing assigned work in a
consistent and timely manner.
2.
There are no short cuts in this course. If you do the work assigned, your
knowledge and grade will reflect that. If you elect to take those imagined
short cuts, your knowledge and grade may suffer.
3.
LATE WORK: Late work will not be accepted except under extreme
circumstances, and unless approved by the professor prior to the
assignment date, and provided that the request is reasonable and has merit.
Note: If the assignment is to be submitted via Blackboard, the opportunity to
submit the assignment will end at the stated time and you will not be able to
earn credit for that particular assignment.

4.

GRADING STANDARDS: Each student will be evaluated on the work

assigned for the course. Each student is expected to perform in a manner
consistent with college, graduate level requirements.

Page 5

Financial Management BUS539

Course Syllabus, Continued

5.

CELL PHONES & PAGERS: Ensure all cell phones and pagers are off or are
in silent or vibrate mode during each class session. Noises from these
devises are VERY distracting to the class. DO NOT answer phones in class.

Academic Honesty:
It should be understood by the student that each homework assignment and section test
is to be completed by the student individually. All work must be the original work of
each student. Of particular note: Excel, Word, Powerpoint, Access and other computer
files are not to be passed around and used by other students. Failure to protect
computer work may result in the originating student receiving a 0 score for the
assignment and/or may lead to a failing grade in the course.
The University has specific policies regarding academic honesty and copied work that
must be taken seriously. See the University policy on academic honesty.
Student Responsibility:
Each student is responsible for individual learning. As such, each student must:
1. Read all material assigned and complete course requirements as indicated.
2. Ask appropriate questions during interaction sessions to further you
understanding and seek further assistance if there are still questions.
3. Think! Having a graduate degree isnt about knowing how to regurgitate
information that someone told you. Having a graduate degree means that you
know how to think and problem solve on your own.
Students are required to check their CBU email account and Blackboard each week.
This is the most efficient way the instructor has to communicate with individuals outside
of class time. In addition, any changes in homework assignments or changes to the
syllabus will be posted on Blackboard.

General Notes:
Communication: Communication is the key to success. Maintain constant
communication with the professor if you have issues or situations that could
have an effect on your grade.
Email: All students have a calbaptist.edu email account. Each student is
required to check this account on a regular basis as it may be the only way for
the professor to communicate with individuals in a timely manner outside of
the classroom. Students are to use professional, formal business etiquette
when communicating with the professor.
IMPORTANT NOTE: E-mails can be legal documents. It is imperative that
you review your message before sending it.
Blackboard: Each student is required to check BlackBoard on a regular basis
to obtain the following (not inclusive): Announcements, homework solutions,
syllabus revisions, etc.
Syllabus Revisions: Revisions will be made at the discretion of the professor.
They will be announced in class and/or posted to BlackBoard.
Disabilities: If a student has a disability and wants to receive special
consideration, the disability must be properly documented with Student
Page 6

Financial Management BUS539

Services. A letter from Student Services must be provided to the professor by

the end of the second calendar week of class outlining the disability.
Keep all assignments, homework, exams, etc. In the event of a grading error
the student will need the original graded document to present to the professor
for a grading correction.
Note: The course requirements and assignments may change at any time as
determined necessary by the professor.
