DieselEngine&Emissions
Thedieselengineisthemostefficientpowerplantamongallknowntypesofinternalcombustion
engines.Heavytrucks,urbanbuses,andindustrialequipmentarepoweredalmostexclusivelybydiesel
enginesallovertheworldanddieselpoweredpassengercarsareincreasinglypopular.Forthe
foreseeablefuture,theworldstransportationneedswillcontinuetorelyonthedieselengineandits
gasolinecounterpart.However,bothenginetechnologiesareevolvingataneverincreasingpaceto
meettwomajorchallenges:loweremissionsandincreasedenergyefficiency.
Internalcombustionenginesaresignificantcontributorstoairpollutionthatcanbeharmfultohuman
healthandtheenvironment.Inresponse,cleandieseltechnologieswithnearzeroemissionsofNOx
andPMhavebeendevelopedandintroducedinregionswiththemoststringentemissionstandards:
NorthAmerica,EuropeandJapan.Whilenewcleandieselenginesaregraduallyreplacingthe
populationofolderdieselenginesintheseregions,olderenginesalreadyinservicearebeingretrofitted
withcleandieseltechnologiestohastenemissionsreductions.Asthistrendspreadstootherpartsof
theworld,theenvironmentalfocushasshiftedtoclimatechangingemissionsandenergyefficiency.The
environmentalbenefitoflowgreenhousegasemissions,traditionallyassociatedwiththedieselengine,
isnolongersufficient.Tomeetfuturegreenhousegasandfueleconomyregulations,newtechnologies
arebeingdevelopedlowtemperaturecombustion,wasteheatrecovery,powertrainelectrification,to
nameafewthatfurtherincreasetheefficiencynotonlyofthedieselenginepowertrainbuttheentire
vehicleaswell.Underlowcarbonregulatorypolicies,thescopeforpotentialimprovementsisnolonger
limitedtoenginesandvehicles,butalsoincludeslifecycleeffectsoffuelproductionandvehicle
manufacture.
