Canon Drivers and Utilities
SUBJECT:
Issue when extracting a ZIP File Downloaded from the Canon Website
GENERAL:
This Technical Publication is released to make you aware of issues that may arise after extracting a Canon
Driver or Utility downloaded from one of our Canon Websites and how to correct the files if this issue does
occur.
DETAILS:
The files contained in the compressed ZIP file may have their properties changed when extracted by the
operating system.
Affected Operating Systems:
Microsoft Windows 7, Service Pack 1
Microsoft Windows Vista, Service Pack 1
Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Service Pack1/Service
Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2/Service Pack3
Symptom:
When downloading a compressed zip file from a Canon website and using compression software to unzip
or extract the file(s), may change the date of the file(s) to the current date and time.
Scenario 1:
Using the Add Printer Wizard and installing the driver where the date has been updated. The date
changed in this scenario will allow a previous version to overwrite a newer version due to the date
change.
1. Install PCL v20.60 Driver on a PC. (e.g. February 10)
2. Download PCL v20.50 Driver from the Canon Website. (.zip format)
3. Unzip the zipped PCL v20.50 Driver on a Windows PC. (e.g. March 10)
4. Use the Add Printer Wizard to install the PCL v20.50 Driver.
5. Since the 20.50 version is older, it should not be installed. However, if the time stamp for each file
is March 10 the OS determines that the 20.50 version is newer and it results in and installation or
downgrade.
**The Add Printer Wizard is an OS function, so the wizard checks the file date, not the file version.
Older version should not be able to install over a new version but can be installed if date
changes.
Newer version cannot be installed over the older version because the date change is newer.

Scenario 2:
Using the Setup.exe (installer) and installing the driver where the date has been updated.
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.
6.
7.

Download the PCL v20.50 driver from the Canon Website. (.zip format)
Unzip the zipped the PCL v20.50 driver on a Windows PC. (e.g. March 10)
Install the PCL v20.50 driver using setup.exe.
Download the PCL v20.60 driver from the Canon Website (.zip format)
Unzip the zipped PCL v20.60 driver on a Windows PC. (e.g. February 10)
Install the PCL v20.60 driver using setup.exe and perform rewrite installation. (e.g. February 10)
Since the version 20.60 driver is newer, installing version 20.60 starts. However, the date of
version 20.50 driver is newer, so the version 20.50 driver files will not be replaced with the
v20.60 driver files. Setup.exe checks the version first, and then starts the installation. The OS
checks the date to update the file, so the file is not written correctly.
The file looks updated, but it is not updated correctly.
How the printer driver will behave is unknown.

Cause:
This symptom occurs due to the Zone ID added by the OS. The OS adds the Zone ID to the file once the
file you downloaded is determined to be from another network. If you use the OS's standard build-in unzip
utility to unzip the zip file with the Zone ID added, the date of the file will change.
(http://support.microsoft.com/kb/942532 & http://support.microsoft.com/kb/883260)
Workaround:
You can check whether the Zone ID is added to the file by looking at
the "Properties" of the file.
If you know who provided the file, delete the Zone ID information, and
then unzip the file.
<How to delete Zone ID information>
1. Right-click on the zip file and then click "Properties".
2. Click "General" and then click "Unblock" button.
3. Click "OK" to unzip the zip file.
**Canon USA attempts to upload all compressed files as EXE files to
avoid this issue. However, there are some situations that may require the
files to be in a ZIP format. When this occurs please be aware of this
situation and follow the procedures in this Technical Publication to avoid
any issues.
