STUDENT LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

1. Explain the role of operations management in the firm.
2. Explain the need for operations to coordinate with other functions.
3. State and explain basic principles of manufacturing strategy, facility design and
layout, and production planning and control.
4. Explain the strategic importance of product and process design.
5. State the importance of quality management and use the basic quality tools.
6. Differentiate service operations from goods producing operations.
7. Explain the importance of capacity planning.
8. Describe the main characteristics of supply chains and lean systems.
GRADING CRITERIA:
Exams (75%)
There will be 3 in-class exams, all with problems, multiple choice, and true/false
and questions. The weights and tentative examination dates are as follows:
Exam I (25%)-Week of 2/22; Exam II (25%)-Week of 4/4; Final Exam
(25%)-Week of 5/9
The exams are closed book but a formula sheet, if required, will be handed out
with the exam. Exams will be taken on the assigned date unless there is some
unavoidable emergency. It is the students responsibility to let the instructor
know of the emergency ahead of exam and set a new exam date (if you need to
reschedule you need to provide documentation of your emergency). I do not
handover graded exams to students. If a student wants to go over her/his exam
he has to meet me during my office hours or setup an appointment with me.
Exam Review:

The Monday of an exam week (except for Finals Week) will be used for lecture catchup (if needed) and review of covered material that should help you prepare for the
exam.
Quizzes (8%)
Eight quizzes will be taken online between 8:00 AM on Tuesday and 11:30 PM on
Friday of the week assigned. As homework, short answer and essay type
questions as well as numerical problems will be assigned from the text. Homework
assignments will be graded indirectly through the scheduled quizzes (8% of grade
total) focused on the homework questions and problems. Quizzes will reflect only
material that has been previously discussed.
Problem Assignments (10%)
Two problems using Microsoft Project and Excel will be submitted for 5 % credit
each.
Discussion Forums (7%)
Discussion Forums about readings and cases will be conducted using Blackboard.
Instructions for Discussion Forums will be distributed separately from syllabus.
Discussion Forum assignments will comprise 7% of the grade total.
Late Work: Work must be turned in on time. Late work will not be accepted.
Final grades: A = 90-100%; B = 80-89% C = 70-79%; D = 60-69% F = less than
60%.
CLASS ATTENDANCE AND PARTICIPATION:
Achievement in the class is highly correlated with regular class attendance and
participation. Regular, timely attendance is expected of all students. Participation is
important to the classroom learning experience. Careful preparation by reading the
requisite chapters will be expected of all students. Brief question and answer
periods will be utilized to review material, and students will be asked to summarize,
critique, and/or provide examples of concepts in the assigned readings.
If I am late for class, wait 15 minutes. After that, you may assume class is
canceled and the scheduled material will be included in the next meeting.
STUDENTS WITH DISABILITIES: The College of Business complies with the
Americans with Disabilities Act in making a reasonable accommodation for qualified
students with disabilities. If you have (1) an established disability as defined in the
Americans with Disabilities Act 1990 and amended, (2) have registered with the
Office of Disability Accommodation, and (3) would like to request an
accommodation, please contact the course professor as soon as possible.
Note: University Policy requires that students notify their instructor(s) within the first
week of class that an accommodation will be needed.
ACADEMIC DISHONESTY POLICY: The UNT Code of Student Conduct and
Discipline provides penalties for misconduct by students, including academic
dishonesty. Academic dishonesty includes cheating and plagiarism. The term
cheating includes, but is not limited to, (1) use of any unauthorized assistance in
taking quizzes, tests or examinations; (2) dependence upon the aid of sources
beyond those authorized by the instructor in writing papers, preparing reports,
solving problems, or carrying out other assignments; or (3) the acquisition, without
permission, of tests or other academic material belonging to a faculty member or
staff of the university. The term plagiarism includes, but is not limited to, the use,

by paragraph or direct quotation, of the published or unpublished work of another

person without full and clear acknowledgment. It also includes the unacknowledged
use of materials prepared by another person or agency engaged in the selling of
term papers or other academic materials. (Source: Code of Conduct and Discipline
at the University of North Texas.) If you engage in academic dishonesty related to
this class, you will receive a failing grade on the test or assignment, and a failing
grade in the course. In addition, the incident will be reported to the UNT Office of
the Provost and the investigation will follow the outlined "Academic Integrity
Process" as referenced at http://www.vpaa.unt.edu/academic-integrity.htm.
