Walking with the ghosts Easter Egg Hunt coverage on pages 16 & 17

of Sullivan’s Island
By Kristin Hackler

S
hots echo across the shallow margin of water of
Breach Inlet between Sullivan’s Island and the
Isle of Palms. Of the two distant figures running
along the shore, one collapses onto the sand; the other
runs even faster, but he won’t make it. His pursuers
finally capture him and take him to trial, where the
last sunrise Stede Bonnett sees is from the gallows
erected along the oyster-covered banks of White Point
Gardens. Piracy, in Charleston, is not taken lightly.
Sullivan’s Island is thick with ghosts. They guide
horse-drawn trolleys along Middle Street and sing to
themselves as they seed their oyster beds between
the Sullivan’s Island Narrows and Shell Bank. They
whisper in the old beach houses and weep softly in
the lazaretto, the bones of which were used to build
Grace Church. On the beaches, turn-of-the-century
bathers dip their toes in salt water for the first time,
but most of their history had been lost; at least, until
recently.
Cindy Lee, an Isle of Palms resident and East Cooper
native, has spent her whole life enveloped in history.
From her high school days as a docent for Boone Hall
Plantation to her degree in American History from
the College of Charleston, Cindy has lived the past of
Charleston and its outlying barrier islands. Though
her studies have taken her many places, her heart
has always been drawn to Sullivan’s Island.
“We would visit the island and spend all afternoon
driving past the batteries and visiting old houses,”
Cindy smiled, “but we couldn’t talk about the history
because we didn’t know it.”
It was this curiosity and her innate historian’s
sense of preservation that led Cindy to research and
write her second book, A Tour of Historic Sullivan’s
Island.
Though it’s a short read at 110 pages, A Tour of
Historic Sullivan’s Island is an invaluable source of
local stories, legends and facts on everything from its

tarting at noon on Saturday, April 4, several Sullivan’s Island kids leapt to
their feet and began searching the grounds outside of the Poe Library for their
share of elusive Easter eggs. The Poe Library has sponsored an Easter egg
hunt for the past several years and they always have a decent turnout: just enough
kids come by to make it fun, but not too crowded.
Parents stood by and watched as kids gathered up their
pastel treasures and smiled with surprise at the variety
of treats tucked inside.
