Ed Linberg invites you to attend the
next concert of the Mountainside Master
Chorale set for Sunday, March 13 at 3:30 P.M. at
the Claremont UCC Church, located at the
corner of 6th and Harrison, Claremont CA
The theme of this concert is Eternal
Light. It will feature two major works. One is
the well-known Requiem by Gabriel Faure, a
work filled with haunting melodies and
powerful musical phrases. The other is a
contemporary work, Eternal Light, which
provides the theme for this concert. It is by
Howard Goodall, a British composer.
Published in 2008, this work combines English
texts with phrases from the traditional Latin
Requiem text. Among the English texts used by
Goodall are: In Flanders Fields the Poppies
Blow, the well-known poem from World War
I, and the hymn text, Lead, Kindly Light
Amid the Encircling Gloom.
Tickets are $17 for Seniors and
Students. Adult tickets cost $20. However, if
10 or more people choose to buy tickets from
Ed, the group rate of $10 goes into effect. He
needs to have your ticket orders no later than
Sunday, March 6thtwo weeks from this
Sunday.

One of the groups that
benefitted from our Alternative Christmas
Faire last November 1 has sent us a letter. It
will be posted on the bulletin board by this

We are so thankful for how you have
contributed tangibly to help those in need with
your donation of $485 in 2015. Corazon Builds

Week Of Compassion
Offering To Be Received
On Feb, 21 And Feb, 28
The 2016 Week of Compassion
Offering will be received on each of the next
two Sundays. On this coming Sunday,
February 21, the worship bulletin will contain a
flyer with information about this very
important special offering and an envelope for
you to use in making your gift. Going into this
Sunday we have received $98 toward our goal
of $1,770.00! Thanks to those of you who have
contributed early to get us off to a good start in
reaching, or exceeding, our goal.
We hope the statistical information
about issues addressed by the Week of
Compassion Offering, as well as the quotations
that have been included in The Caller on
both February 7 and 14 have increased your
awareness about the importance of this annual
offering which, traditionally, is our largest
special offering of the year. If you are using
the Sharing Calendar which was initially
distributed during Childrens Moment on
1/31, we hope youll continue using it through
the end of the month and bring your gift on
February 28. We remind the children that their
Offering Boxes are to be brought with them to
worship on that Sunday, too. We will include
the receiving of their boxes as part
of Childrens Moment on February 28.

From the President Disciples Home Missions

Two verses of Scripture have been competing for my attention this week. Their words
are like the words of a nifty song you hear in church on a Sunday morning and whose
melody you just cannot get out of your mind. The melody of the words stick with you
long after the worship experience is over.
The first verse is from the Prophet Isaiah: "The wolf shall live with the lamb, the leopard
shall lie down with the kid, the calf and the lion and the fatling together, and a little
child shall lead them" [Isaiah 11:6]. The second verse is from Matthew's Gospel: "So the
last will be first, and the first will be last" [Matthew20:16].
These verses remind me of the truth of Scripture. Not the inerrancy or infallibility of
Scripture, as some look for, but the truth. There are some things about God and religion
that are just plain true, like Isaiah 11:6 and Matthew 20:16. You can probably name by
chapter and verse those Scriptures whose truth is self-evident to you, too.
This is where author Madeleine L'Engle's words come into play:
"The Bible is true. It's not entirely factual, but; it's true. That's hard for a lot of people to
understand. Fact and truth are not the same. I love what Karl Barth said: 'I take the Bible
far too seriously to take it literally.' Some of the Bible is history and some is story, and we
don't always know which is which. But it doesn't matter. What I'm looking for in the
Bible is truth. If you look at the great protagonists in the Old and New Testaments, not
one of them is qualified to do what God is asking that individual to do. (In a sense we're
all unqualified.) God goes to great pains to pick the unqualified. If you were starting a
nation, would you pick a woman past menopause and a man a hundred years old? That
doesn't seem sensible, but that's what God did. The message is clear. If you think you're
qualified, you might believe you did a good job. If you know you're unqualified,
you realize you can only accomplish something because you're empowered by God."
There is no book like the good Book. Its truth keeps marching on forever, and ever, and
ever, and ever, and ever, and ever, and ever - and ever, and ever, and ever - and that's a
long time! If the Scripture is not a steady part of your congregational diet, as well as your
personal theological diet, you are starving your congregation and yourself. I surmise that
God is just now selecting the 'unqualified' you to be the bearer of the truth of Scripture to
those in need of some good news!
Unqualifiedly and truthfully yours,

The end you serve that are selfish will take you no future than yourself. But, the ends you serve that are
for all, in common, will take you into eternity. Marcus Garvey
