CHAPTER THREE

SINGLE DASH DIVISION RACING 1976 – Present Day

Division racing was the inevitable result of the
growth in nominations to the program that
developed after the purses in 1974 doubled
from the previous year. For the first time, the
number of horses paying in exceeded 300, and
the result would be an increase in the number
of starters and the need for more divisions of
the classes. In 1975 the annual meeting
approved a proposal that would see all divison
winners receive trophies with colts and fillies
racing in separate divisions. The Colt Stakes
would also adopt the single dash format that
the tracks used for overnight races.

C F Willis and Sons was the name under

began his racing involvement in 1945, later
moving to Covehead and building the
Covehead track. From there he moved to
O’Leary to begin a produce business and
constructed a second track for matinee
purposes that still operates as such today. His
co-owners were his sons, principally Orville,
and on occasion Melvin and Glydon. They
patronized the early yearling sales and several
times took home the sale topper. With Orville
often in the sulky the father-son partnership
took home several Colt Stakes trophies notably

founder of a racing family that now extends
into its fourth generation. A small man in
stature he might have been, but his presence
was large, as was his influence on those around Carolyn D driven by Angus MacPhee.for his father
him. His first love in life was family, and then
horses. This was evident in the way he
entwined his two loves by naming his horses
after family members. He bred the Colt Stakes
winning filly Carolyn D who would go on to a
berth in the Gold Cup and Saucer when she
was only four years old. Richie was named PEI
Horseman Of The Year the same year that
Carolyn D was named PEI Horse Of The Year

Personalities

Hollylaine Island Farm owned by Robert and

Nina Webster has been in the forefront of Dunmore Tweed
Island breeding for the last thirty-two years.
Standing such sires as A Cs Dandy, Sultros
Rainbow, Maxwell Almahurst, Curtis
Hanover, This Cams For You, Force Of Life
and others, coupled with their own broodmare
band, they have produced many stakes
performers and Maritime Champions. As a
veterinarian he once worked for the prestigious
Armstrong Brothers farm in Ontario, and has a
wealth of experience in how to put up great
looking yearlings that have stakes potential.
Island Governess was one of the first but then
there was the great Island Storm, Invader,
Kaptain, Missile, Panther, Reba, Ribbon,
Tradition and many more. In the past three
crops of Hollylaine yearlings all of them have
raced at two or three. In total Hollylaine Island
Farm has bred twenty-nine PEI Colt Stakes
winners. The farm ranks as the top breeding
farm in the Maritimes in this category. Dr Bob Webster

Personalities
Maple Grove Shadow takes the fastest three-year-old colt
Ralph McCully, the personable master of division for driver Winston Campbell.
Dunmore Farm in Antigonish, has an enviable
record in producing Colt Stakes winning
trotters. He has bred ten winners, including
three in which he retained ownership. His
favorite was the Maritime Champion Dunmore
Skye who won in 1996 with Clare MacDonald
driving. That combination would produce two
more winners but most recently, Edward
“Teddy” Smallwood has been the one to take
the Dunmore trotters to the Colt Stakes winner
circle with Dunmore TKO, Dunmore Alpha
and, in 2008, with the two-year-old winner
Dunmore Chip. Ralph had the unique
experience of having three of his two-year-old
trotters finish 1-2-3 in The Globetrotter stake

Colt Stakes action as a breeder, owner and
driver, not only because of the number of
victories he has claimed but also the record
number of Colt Stakes record miles he has
produced with both pacers and trotters. At one
time he held four separate class records and
has equalled or broken the record in all classes
at one time or other. His forty wins, as either a
breeder with eight, owner with thirteen or
driver with nineteen, and many times all three
at once, rank him among the most successful

Personalities

Collins Lea Wood was a livestock dealer and

a horse trader from an early age. He also took
up harness racing as a boy and remembers his
Guy On The Go with Russell Burgoyne
first race on the ice of Charlottetown harbour.
His interest in horses led him to breed his own
under the CL’s name and he did so with
considerable success. In 1994 he had two wins
as a breeder with CL’s Social Whirl and CL’s
Beauty and he was also the breeder of record
and owner of Colt Stakes winner Woodmere
Jilly. His greatest impact on the breeding
industry on PEI, however, has been as a result
of the many mares that he brought in from
sales in the United States. There were many
stakes winners raised from such mares
including Dunachton Dandy, the first sub 2:00
two-year-old Colt Stakes winner. He was
named PEI Horseman Of The Year in 2002.

breeder under his East River Farm, a noted
dairy farm with top pedigreed cattle. He has
been active in Colt Stakes business as a
director and as President in 1983-85, and has
served in several industry organizations. He
retired from farming and moved across the
road in Marshfield to set up Woodmere Farms

Pat McHugh held the office of President of Buddywhatshisname and Kenny Arsenault
the PEI Colt Stakes in 1999-2001. Unlike most
past Presidents he was not involved in
breeding or owning race horses to any great
degree but worked for Hollylaine Island Farms
on a casual basis. A strong-minded individual,
it was he who spurred on the process, while
President, that resulted in the creation of the
PEI Harness Racing Industry Association in
2000. It was at a meeting he chaired during
Old Home Week in 1999, that the invited
representatives of various tracks and stakes
organizations first seriously considered the
formation of a Maritime Industry group with
three Provincial chapters. It was a turning point
for the industry for Prince Edward Island and
eventually the Maritimes generally Pat McHugh

Elm Grove Action took almost a second off

the two-year-old colt record for the first Colt
Stakes winner bred by Elm Grove Farm.

Personalities

Elwood Lawton is the master of Southview

Farms, a picturesque breeding and training Howmacs Dragon and Marc Campbell
operation overlooking Pownal Bay. In a few
short years he has produced some very special
stakes winners including the current two and
three-year-old filly record holder, 1:58 at two
and 1:56.2 at three, appropriately named
Southview Special. It is only the second time
in the history of the Colt Stakes that one horse
has held two records at the same time. He is
also the breeder of Maritime record holder
Oceanview Kitty who set the two-year-old filly
record of 1:57.1 in 2008. Elwood has been
active in the industry as a director and Vice
President of the Charlottetown Driving Park.

breeder of exceptional colts and fillies.
Operating from his farm not far from Truro, he
has produced several Maritime champions
including his most recent in Deep Finesse, the
top two-year-old pacing colt of 2008. He also
bred the current PEI Colt Stakes two-year-old
pacing colt record holder in Force Ore Finesse
who won at two and at three.. That colt was
from a mare he raised by his own stallion
Waveore as was another top two-year-old in
Dube Finesse. He also stood Sherwood Abe

more victories with nine of them driven by son
Darryl. They took the Colt Stakes record for
three-year-old trotters with Scarlet Nite in
1988. Another son, Todd, won a four-year-old
Colt Stakes event with Scarlet Eve to set yet
another record, this time for family
performance. Their foundation mare Scarlet
Dawn produced a record four Colt Stakes

more. A fourth generation colt was stakes

horses in the Maritimes, won his first PEI Colt
Stakes in 1975 with Glowing Wayvue. Four
years later he was back setting a Stakes record
with Ego Trip, a colt he had bought in the first
PEI yearling sale. He would return to the same
venue to purchase Whos To Care and Whos To
Bless, both Colt Stakes winners. In total he has
won fifteen Colt Stakes races as a driver and
five as an owner including his most recent
victory in 2008 with the Maritimes top two-
year-old pacing colt, Deep Finesse, and with
the three-year-old colt Absolom. He also has
