Synopsis
This paper will discuss christianity and women, how women are viewed in society
and the potential of women. Several reseach were conducted in order to make this
paper. One of the finding after doing the reseaech is that women were still being
opressed even though it is not as noticable.

Christianity and Women: Women and Their Power

Introduction
In the world, one thing can be perceived in many ways and different perspectives
may result in conflicting views. A person may perceive a glass as half full while another
person may perceive it as half empty. Burping after eating is considered a compliment in
the Asian culture; on the other hand, it is disrespectful in Western culture. Some people
may ignore the existence of a god, a few may believe the existence of several gods,
and others believe the existence of the one true God. The existence of different
perspectives impact how women are viewed differently from men in society.
Society often views women as inferior to men. While in Christianity, women are
viewed as equals to men, however, each gender has their own roles. Women have the
same potential as men, even though they are not as masculine as men; they are
capable of doing things that men cannot. If women are viewed as inferior to men
because they cannot do what men can, then men should be inferior to women because
they cannot do what women can.

Societys Views on Women

In society, women are often viewed as feminine and inferior. In the past, they
were not allowed to work, receive an education, and did not have the right to vote.

Vincent 4

Women had to endure constant discrimination before they were granted their basic
rights today. However, women are still being oppressed in the modern world even
though it is not as noticeable. (RsRevison, Role of Women in Society)
In The Past
In the past, women had no right to vote or even make their own life decission.
Women were not allowed to choose their own partner; their parents would choose for
them instead. In a family, women did not have a say in how the family will run. In a
community, women werent allowed to vote for their leaders. To sum it up, in the past
women had no power, no freedom, and no capability to do anything. (RsRevison, Role
of Women in Society).
However, women slowly started to fight for their rights. In 1928, women finally got
the right to vote. From there, women progressively gained their basic rights. In 1975,
women were acknowledged as equals to men in work place; they could work alongside
men. (RsRevison, Role of Women in Society)
In The Present
Women have become more powerful and more capable compared to the past
and they are not discriminated againts men anymore. Women have begun to rule over
groups, cities and even countries. Women have begun to set history. (RsRevison,
Role of Women in Society). An example of a modern woman is Megawati
Soekarnoputri. Megawati Soekarnoputri was the fifth president of Indonesia
and the daughter of the first president. She successfully showed that women are
capable to be leaders like men. Megawati Soekarnoputri brought Indonesia out of the
International Monetary Fund (IMF) and created the Indonesian Corruption Eradication

Vincent 5

Commission known as the KPK. Megawatis actions have positively impact the
development of Indonesia into the country it is now. (Kresna, 46 Prestasi Megawati)

Biblical View on Women

In Genesis 1:27-28 God says:
27

So God created mankind in his own image,

in the image of God he created them;
male and female he created them.

28

God blessed them and said to them, Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the
earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky and
over every living creature that moves on the ground. (New International
Version, Genesis 1:27-28)

He created both man and woman in His own image (Genesis 1:27). The Bible
uses the pronoun them to state that there are no differences between men and
women. These verses show that women are equal with men and therefore, viewing one
as more superior than the other is a sin. God also said that both men and women were
to ...rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky and over every living creature
that moves on the ground. (New International Version, Genesis 1:28b) This section of
the verse shows that women have the same capability, power and privilege as men.
Therefore, women are no different from men and gender inequality should virtually be
nonexistent. (Leitch. What does the bible say about Womans Right?)
Another verse , 1 Corinthians 11:11-12 tells that women and men are actually
related. Nevertheless, in the Lord woman is not independent of man, nor is man not
independent of woman. For as the woman originates from the man, so also the man has

Vincent 6

his birth through the woman; and all things originated from God. (New International
Version, 1 Corinthians 11:11-12)
Eve was made from Adams rib. This shows that women are dependent on men,
and the opposite is also true; men are also dependent on women. The only way men
can come into this world is through women. So women and men are dependent on each
other and there is no such thing as superiority. Men and women have equal rights,
freedom and power. (Gender Equality. What the Bible Say?)

Comparison
Differing from society, the Bible wanted us to view women the same way we
view men. Genesis 2:18 says It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a
helper suitable for him. The verse above are words said by God. The word helper is
used to describe women and is often misinterpreted by society. The word helper does
not connotatively mean that women are slaves to men. The word helper is translated
from the hebrew word Ezer, which Jesus uses to refer Himself. According to Jones
Dictionary of Old Testament Proper Names, the word Ezer means treasury or treasure.
Women are not meant to be slaves contrary to what society used to think. They are
meant to be treasured helpers who will support men in times of difficulties. There is no
specific word in English to describe the word Ezer. (Leitch. What does the bible say
about Womans Right?)

True Potentials of Women

Facts about Women
Women were often viewed as powerless, incapable and inferior to men. But these
facts about women will prove the society wrong.
1. 20% of women in the US at least earn $ 5000 more than their spouse.
2. Israel is the only country to draft women to military service.
3. Women were allowed to participate in the Olympic Games since 1900.
4. 30% of business in the US are owned by women.
5. Miami is the only major city founded by a woman.
("52 Women Facts." FactsSlide)
The facts given above are based on research and analysis in America. Fact #1 and
#4 have proven that women are capable on ruling over businesses like how men do.
20% of the US women even produce more salary compared to their husband. This
serves as strong evidence that women are not powerless. Fact #2 and #3 also show
that women are now more treated equally compared to before. Women are allowed to
join the olympic games. The participation of women in the olympic games shows that
women can also play sports and win medals like men. Israel, becoming the only country
to draft women to military service, has shown that gender is not a barrier that prevents
someone from doing something. Just because you are a woman, does not mean that
you cant participate in military services.
The same thing goes for fact #5. Being a woman does not stop a person from
exploring and discovering great things. Miami, a major US city known for its beach, was
actually founded by a woman named Julia Tuttle also known as Mother of Miami.
(Campbell. Julia Tuttle - Mother of Miami)

Roles Of Women
God has given different roles for women. In the family, women were to support
their husband in times of joy and sadness. Men were also to love their wife just as
Christ has loves us all. This role is taken from Ephesians 5:23-25 For the husband is
the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church, his body, of which he is the
Savior. Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit to their
husbands in everything. Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and
gave himself up for her to make her holy, cleansing her by the washing with water
through the word (What does the Bible say about Gender Roles?)
In church, women also have roles that God expects them to fulfill. According to
the Bible, women were not allowed to become leaders, pastors or elder in the church. It
is said that men are the one who is suited for the position. Other than the three
positions, women can choose which role to occupy. In order to excel and fulfill Gods
expectation, women first need to be spiritually mature. Unless they are mature enough,
everything they do for the church and for the Christ will not be to the best of their ability.
(West, What are Christian Woman to do?)

Inspiring Women
Mary was known as one of the most important woman in the Bible. Mary was
responsible for the birth of our saviour, Jesus Christ. Without the presence of Mary,
Jesus Christ would not have been born. God had specifically chose Mary as the one to
deliver Jesus to the world, which means that God used a woman to save all mankind.
God is omnipotent and He actually had many other options in how He would send His

Vincent 9

Son to the earth, but God chose a woman to help Him. The virgin birth of Jesus is
scientifically impossible yet God made it happened. This being said, God wants to tell
us that women are capable of doing amazing things that nobody could ever imagine.
Therefore, everyone should respect women and treat them equally as men. (Trigilio and
Brighenti. Influential Women of the Bible)
Mother Teresa was also one of the famous inspirational woman. She was wellknown for helping the poor and the sick. She was a kind-hearted person. God used
Mother Teresa as a tool to show the world that woman are capable of doing amazing
things. Most of the poeple in that era werent expecting a woman to do charity work.
They think that women were only subjected to do household. Mother Teresa broke the
barrier and proved to the world that a woman could do incredible things. Now, many
people look up to Mother Teresa as one of the most influential people. Mother Teresa
herself had proven the society that women are capable and have power. Mother Teresa
also proved that the barriers between men and women do not exist when it comes to
helping other people. (Fisher. 25 inspiring women)

Conclusion
As Christians, we believe that God created men and women in His image, which
means that we need to treat men equally to women. We need to respect women and
treat them as we would men. The segregation of genders has decreased in modern
times, however, gender inequality continues to exist. We as Christians, are the ones
that should make a difference to end the inequality on genders.

Vincent 10

As time passed, women eventually gained back their rights. With their rights back
in their possession, women can do almost everything according to their will. Women can
become almost anything they want, such as: business women, housewife, president,
leaders and more.
Women are not to be ruled over and to be abused. They are Gods creation that
He created to help us in our everyday life. In the past, women were seen as powerless
by the society. Today, in this moment, women themselves had proved society wrong.
Facts and historical events have proven that women can be powerful. They can be so
powerful to the point where they surpass men. But, at the end of the day, women still
need to follow all Gods word including the roles that He has already give.

Self-Evaluation
One thing that i need to improve in the next writing project is my grammar, time
management, and analytical skills. I need to improve my grammar because this paper is

Vincent 11

really weak at grammar at first. After the help of several friends, the grammar and the
sentence structure become better. I also need to improve my time management
because i procastinated again at doing this research. Even though it is better compared
to the last research in year 11, i still need to improve the time management. I also need
to improve my analytical skills so that i can deeply analyze more article.
Personally, i would rate this paper okay. Even though at first it has a really poor
grammar, by editing i believe that this paper becomes better. Also, the idea for this
paper is not bad nor excellent, it is okay.
The most difficult part of this writing project is, ofcourse first, the grammar. Next
part is researching as there is not many articles in the web discussing about gender and
women. Most of the article are discussing about war, addiction, sciences. After several
researching process, one thing that i learn is that gender inequality still occurs nowadys.
Founding the fact that gender inequaltiy still happen is significant because it contradicts
the word of God and we, as christians, need to put an end to it. Wording my idea is also
a difficult task in this report. I know the idea in my head; i just don not know how to
express them with words.
From the final report of the writing, i like how my idea is being paragraphed
orderly. I also like how my ideas is being put into words correctly like what i have in my
mind. Overall, i like my paper. The most successful part from the overall process is the
finalizing of my paper. When i do my finalizing, i am glad enough that i did not need to
make many information editting. The major changes that i make when i am finalizing my
paper is the grammar changes.

Vincent 12

I enjoy finding the relation between women and christianity during the research
and writing process. I also find out that we can use an annotation feature in microsoft
word rather than putting them in the margin like what we used to did back in year 10.
