Instrument requiring tracing are defined in instrument list in accordance with piping and

instrumentation diagrams.

They can be:

- Flanged-mounted instruments, such as control valves, ON-OFF valves, flow elements, rotameters,

pressure safety valves, or any flanged mounted instrument.

- Tapped-mounted and remote instruments, such as pressure transmitters, level transmitters, flow

transmitters, or any tapped mounted instrument.

7.

DETAIL ENGINEERING AND DESIGN REQUIREMENTS

7.1

Purpose

The purpose of detail engineering and design is to develop, from the documents prepare all

necessary documents and/or calculations which are required to purchase materials, fabricate, install

and test the Steam tracing network.

7.2

General design

Caution shall be taken that tracer feed lines, tracers and tracer return lines do not interfere with

valves, equipment, instruments, etc. in hindering of access, operation, maintenance and removal.

Each tracer feed line shall have a separate valved connection on the steam distribution

manifold. Each tracer return line shall be provided with its own steam trap.

Steam Supply /Condensate Return M anifolds shall be prefabricated in accordance with

Construction Standards rules.

Installation of manifold is preferred in vertical position rather than horizontal position for

space and size matters.

Vertical and horizontal steam supply manifolds shall have a maximum of 12 tracer

connections, including dedicated connections for instruments and spare.

Vertical and horizontal condensate return manifolds shall have a maximum of 12 tracer

connections, including dedicated connections for instruments and spare.

Tracer isometric drawings shall show the tracer route in dotted line, the tracer feed

sequence number from steam manifold and the tracer return sequence number to

condensate return manifold, as well as tracer feed and tracer return pipe length.

All valves and traps shall be accessible from grade or platform.

Each tracer supply shall be routed, to the object to be traced, as short as possible, in

accordance with Construction Standards. The tracer shall start at the highest point and be

routed downwards to the steam trap at the condensate collector.

Tracer feed and tracer return lines shall be insulated in accordance with the Project

Specification Thermal Insulation - RAPID-FE1-TPX-MEC-DES-0001-9002

If a line needs more than one tracer, a tracer may run back and forward along the line as

long as the maximum length is not exceeded.

Project Specification Piping Tracing

Tracing of two different objects with the same tracer is not permitted. Suction and

discharge piping on two or more parallel pumps shall also be treated separately to enable

dismantling at those pumps while others remain in operation.

7.3

Tracers that follow the contour of equipment shall start at the highest point to be traced.

Steam tracer installation

Single tracers shall run along the bottom half of the horizontal pipe line to be traced.

M ultiple tracers shall run at an angle to the vertical axis of the horizontal pipe line and

equally spaced at vertical pipe lines (see PTS.31.38.30.11 sheet 20).

Flange connections shall be used for tracer dismantling but their use shall be limited as

much as possible.

Flange connections shall be installed at pumps, equipment, control valves, relief valves,

special break-out flanges, spectacle blinds and orifice flanges. They shall be installed

outside the insulation to permit dismantling.

Vents, drains, equipment nozzles, chemical cleaning connections and/or steam-out

connections, and all other dead ends at a traced object shall be traced to its extremity or up

to and including its first shut-off valve.

7.4

Thermal expansion

The thermal expansion for tracing will be define by EPCC CONTRACTORS following

tracer material final choice:

Type of steam

Material

Thermal Expansion

LP Steam at 185 C

Stainless steel pipe

To be defined during EPCC

stage

MP Steam at 290 C

Stainless steel pipe

To be defined during EPCC

stage

On long runs, tracers shall be provided with expansion loops. The loops shall be extended

outside the insulation and shall be insulated separately.

7.5

Installing flange connections in loops is not allowed.

Instruments

Tracing of instruments shall be as per the Project Specification - Installation of on-line instruments

- RAPID-FE1-TPX-INC-DES-0001-9018 and as per Instrument Hook-up.

7.6

Supporting

Tracer feed and return lines (lines running from manifold to tracer or from tracer to

manifold) shall be adequately supported with an acceptable method, preferably from, but

not attached to, adjacent structural steel and not from process lines.

The distance between support points shall not exceed 3 m. Supply and return lines, coming

from or going to the same manifold, shall be grouped together as much as possible for

common supports.

Tracer supply and return lines shall not be pocketed except where absolutely necessary for

head room, operation and maintenance.

Tracers shall be supported from the traced object by means of Stainless Steel bands. No

deformation of tracing, due to bending shall be allowed. In all cases the tracer shall be held

tight to the object to be traced without sags.

On pipe rack or pipe way, in offsite or in interconnecting, expansion loops shall be

provided.

Fastening bands shall be installed allowing tracer thermal expansion expect for anchor

points which shall be more tightened.

Tracer bands shall be located as close as possible to the back face of each flange.

If Ta Ti is satisfied, it is judged that number of tracers is sufficient enough to keep

maintenance temperature.
Case 2 : Fluid in traced pipe is not flowing

Q = Qi + Qo
In this case Qi need not be considered, hence:
