Introduction

1.1.

Product Overview
General Description
Ingest Funnel is a software solution which allows to easily (re)use workflows for operators
to automatically or manually ingest various types of media (e.g. HD and SDSDI video
feeds from tape, ENGfiles from P2, Canon XF, Canon EOS, GoPro, Sony XAVC and
Sony XDCAM disks and memory cartridges, media files in all popular file formats, IP
feeds), to transform (transcode, rewrap) these ingested media to the requested output
formats (master/mezannine), to analyze and check their quality, and finally, to deliver
them to the desired destination (e.g. NLE system, IPDirector, third-party MAM, LTO tape,
storage).
In the web-based interface operators can assign a particular media source to a particular
ingest workflow, preview the content, make a selection, create subclips or merge clips,
map the metadata, and start the ingest workflow. Each started workflow job can be
monitored and the status and progress of each workflow job activity can be quickly
checked. If granted permission, the operators can stop and resubmit each workflow job.

Workflows Pane

2.3.1.

About Workflows
Workflow
A workflow in Ingest Funnel is a set of manual and/or automatic actions designed to
prepare and execute an automated process involving audio and video material.
For example, a workflow can involve an operator who loads video files stored in a
particular folder on a particular server in a software player to preview them and who
requests a quality check system to perform an automated quality check on a selection of
these files. The outcome of the quality check is a report that is stored in the form of an
XML or PDF file in a particular folder and that the operator can consult.
A workflow can also involve for example an operator who plays back the content of a
digital video tape, who creates one or more clips and that requests transcoding software to
ingest these clips in a particular file format to a particular target destination. The operator
can then visually check the quality of the ingested files and accept or reject them.
A workflow is the association of a "funnel" (= an ingest part) and a process part. The result
of the ingest part can form the input for the process part. Certain workflows only have an
ingest part and no process part.

Ingest Part
In the ingest part of an Ingest Funnel workflow the operator can explore and browse the file
and folder structure of certain types of source devices (Folder, P2, XF, XDCam, XAVC,
GoPro). The media on the source devices can potentially be previewed, subclipped and/or
merged together, and finally ingested by the operator. During the actual ingest process,
the media can be transformed and/or transferred to a particular target destination. The
output of the ingest process can form the input for the process part.
In our examples, the source devices are the folder containing one or more subfolders with
video files and associated metadata files and the VTR with the digital video tape. The
operator can browse the content of the folder and preview the video files in a software
player on the Ingest page. He can request to merge and/or ingest a selection of files. The
operator can play back the video tape content in a software player, create clips and start
the ingest.
The input for the quality check step is a selection of one or more files from the folder.
The input for the file transfer step is the ingested video tape content.

Process Part
A process is an ordered association of activities and gateways (decision elements
indicating alternative flows) linked together. A process is started by a start event
containing process inputs and results in an end event. Each of the events, activities and
gateways from a process are called steps.

2. Ingest Page

EVS Broadcast Equipment SA

1.01.A- October-2015

In our examples, the files selected from the folder and the digitized video tape content
form the input of the process, namely the quality check step performed by a quality check
system or the file transfer step performed by a file transfer application.
The result of the quality check step is a PDF or XML report generated by the quality check
system in a particular location containing a report of the quality checks executed on the
selected files. The result of the transfer step is a file located in another directory.

Ingest Applications
An ingest application offers ways to browse, select, play and prepare the execution of a
workflow on one or more source medias. Applications are associated to source devices
and are part of workflows. An application can be configured to run on "manual mode"
where user interaction is required to prepare the workflow or on "auto ingest mode" where
the worklow is automatically executed on medias present on the source device.
Three types of ingest applications can be distinguished:

Browse: A type of application allowing for selecting and preparing source medias from
a Folder source device and launching workflow execution on these medias.

ENG: A type of application allowing for selecting and preparing source medias from an
ENG source device and launching workflow execution on these medias.

Capture: A type of application allowing for digitizing source content on tape and
launching workflow execution on the resulting medias.

Workflow Activities
Activity Categories
An activity is an unitary step in the process part of a workflow. Several categories of
activities can be distinguished:

10

Analyze: A specific category of activity in an Ingest Funnel workflow that analyzes a

media and retrieves some of its characteristics.

Transform: A specific category of activity in an Ingest Funnel workflow that will

transcode a media from one file format to another.

Transfer: A specific category of activity in an Ingest Funnel workflow that performs

specific file operations on specified media. Three transfer types can be distinguished :
Copy, Move, Delete.

External Service: A specific category of activity in an Ingest Funnel workflow that

does not impact the audio and video media. No transformation or transfer is done. For
example, a visual quality check performed by the operator.

Start and End Events

A start event is an event that indicates where a particular process starts. A start event can
be triggered.
An end event is an event that indicates where a path in the process will end.

Gateways
Gateways are elements of the process part that control how a process diverges or
converges. All Gateways are represented with a diamond shape.

Depending on the sign inside the diamond shape, the following two types of gateways can
be distinguished:

12

+: All activities behind a + will be executed at the same time.

X: Only one activity behind a x will be executed, based on defined choice conditions.

Overview of the Workflows Pane

2.3.2.1.

Description
The Workflows pane is situated on the right of the Ingest page. Initially, it does not contain
any workflows. As soon as you select a particular source device in the Source Devices
pane, it will list all the workflows you are allowed to view, i.e. for which you have the
necessary user rights, and that can be executed on the video and audio content of the
selected source device (See section "Source Devices Pane" on page 6).
Use your mouse wheel to scroll up or down the list.
The workflow that is currently selected is highlighted in blue.

The Workflows pane can be hidden by clicking the Set Application Mode button in the
Application pane. See section "Application Mode vs. Global Ingest Mode" on page 22.
It allows you to preview the design of each workflow, select for certain workflows a
particular workflow target, map source metadata onto target metadata, create autonaming
rules for target metadata values and enter a new start timecode for clips.

2.3.2.2.

Workflow Design Preview Window

If you hold your cursor over a particular workflow in the Workflows pane, a View
Associated Workflow button appears in the bottom right corner with which you can open
a pop-up that shows the design of the workflow in question.

In this pop-up you can view which source devices and ingest applications are involved in
the ingest part of the workflow and which workflow activities, events and gateways are
involved in the process part (if any), the order in which these elements are arranged and
how they are linked with each other.

2. Ingest Page

13

By double-clicking certain workflow elements, for example a workflow activity, you can
discover their configuration. See the Designer manual for more information.
If the ingest and/or process part contain a lot of workflow elements making their name
almost illegible, then a Zoom button appears enabling you to magnify that part.
To exit the pop-up window again, click the Close button.

2.3.2.3.

Workflow Target List

Description
Depending on the source device and workflow you have selected, a drop-down list might
become available containing one or more workflow targets.

A workflow target is a collection of properties that specify what should be done with the
clips of a particular source device during the ingest, e.g. transform to a particular target file
format, generate a proxy version, transfer to a particular target destination, map source
metadata to a particular target metadata profile, check into an IPDirector or Avid Interplay
environment.

Workflow Target Categories

Four types of workflow target categories can be distinguished:

14

Process: The clips will be transformed and/or transferred to a particular target

destination. The resulting files will be further processed by Ingest Funnel in the
process part of the workflow.

IPDirector: The clips will be transformed and/or transferred together with an

EVSXML to an IPDirector nearline. The clips are checked into an IPDirector database
via the EVSXML.

Interplay: The clips will be transformed into an Avid Interplay clip and transferred to an
Avid Interplay workspace and checked into an Avid Interplay catalog.

File: The clips will be transformed and/or transferred to a particular target destination.
The resulting files will not be further processed. There is no process part.

Target Metadata Panel

Opening the Target Metadata Panel
Depending on the type of source device, workflow and workflow target (IPDirector,
InterPlay, Process) you have selected, you will be able to open a Target Metadata panel.
Click the arrow that appears to the left of the selected workflow.

Overview of the Target Metadata Panel

The Target Metadata panel allows you to map the metadata fields and values associated
to the source clips onto the metadata fields of the metadata profile linked to the selected
workflow target. To view a clip's metadata fields and values, load it in the Player /
Metadata pane and open the Metadata View. See section "Metadata View" on page 49.
The Target Metadata panel also enables you to create an autonaming rule for specific
metadata fields of each clip you want to ingest.
Finally, it allows you to specify a new start timecode for the clips to be ingested.

At the top of the panel, the name of the metadata source is displayed. This is the name of
the selected source device. In the area just below, the name of the workflow target's
existing metadata profiles and associated metadata fields are displayed. In the example
screenshot above, two IPDirector metadata profiles are displayed. No mapping has been
performed yet. The metadata source is an Canon XF source device.
For each metadata field within a metadata profile you can specify which source metadata
field has to be mapped to it. You can also choose to manually enter a value yourself. The
actual metadata mapping will be executed during the ingest.

Mapping Source Metadata onto Target Metadata

There are two ways to map source metadata onto target metadata. You can either link a
source metadata field to a target metadata field or manually enter a metadata value
yourself.

To map a source metadata field to a target metadata field, first select MTDSource
from the drop-down list.

Then, click the metadata field to the right of the drop-down box, click the selected
source device to open the metadata tree structure and select the appropriate source
metadata field.

To map a manually entered metadata value to a target metadata field, select

userDefined from the drop-down list, and then enter a value in the metadata field next
to the drop-down box.

Note
If you do not map the source metadata onto the target metadata, it will not be
retained during the ingest.

Setting an Autonaming Rule for Metadata Fields

If you want a specific target metadata value, for example the clip name, to be
automatically named in a certain way during the ingest, and this for each clip, you can
create an autonaming rule to achieve this. Select Advanced from the appropriate target
metadata field drop-down list, and then click Add Data in the adjacent field.

The Autonaming Rule Creation View appears.

The Append Value area at the top of the view allows you to select the elements that
together should form the name of the target metadata value. You can choose from four
types of elements:

MTD Source: This field allows you to select a source metadata field.

User Defined: This field allows you to enter a text string.

Generic: This field allows you to select a predefined metadata field. Two types can be
distinguished:

Timestamp: YYYY, MM, DD, hh, mm, ss

Internal: User, Workflow

- : A default separator that can be inserted between each element.

A + button is provided to add the selected elements to the Naming Rule area. By default,
new elements are added below the existing elements.
The Naming Rule area displays the various elements that will form the name of the
selected metadata value. The name will be a concatenation of the elements from top to
bottom. You can still modify and remove elements and change their order by a simple
drag-and-drop operation.
To save the new naming rule, click

Application Pane Layouts

The Application pane in the center of the Ingest page is the main workspace of the
operator. It will provide the operator the necessary tools to select, preview and prepare the
desired video content to be ingested.
Depending on the type of source device or workflow the operator selects, the layout of the
Application pane can greatly differ. Four layout types can be distinguished:

Simple

Complex

Auto

VTR

Simple Layout
In the Simple layout, only the Explorer and Content Browser are visible. The Player /
Metadata pane and the Stack Bin and Consolidation Bin are hidden.

This basic layout provides the operator the tools to explore the folders and subfolders on a
particular hard disk or to view which slots of a particular type of card reader contain a
memory card. The operator can browse the content of each folder and card and ingest the
clips of his choice. The operator cannot preview the content of the clips in a video player
and check out their metadata. Nor can he add the files to a basket and start their
automatic ingest. See section "Simple and Complex Layout" on page 23.
This layout is not available for source devices of the type VTR.

Status

The status of the ingest job. This column is only visible in the
simple layout of the Application pane.
This icon indicates that the file is still growing. The status of the file
can be updated by manually refreshing the content of the folder in
the Explorer.
Only MXF OP1a is supported as growing source file and only by the
following workflow activities: OCHD (AVC-Intra MXF OP1a,
XDCAM HD MXF OP1a) and Xsquare (AVC-Intra MXF OP1a,
XDCAM HD MXF OP1a and DVCPRO HD MXF OP1a).

Multiple-File Clips
Certain types of clips can consist of multiple files, but in the Content Browser they are
treated and displayed as a single clip. The
icon appears in case of a multi-file clip.
For example, the root of the P2 file structure is a CONTENTS folder. Each essence item
(an item of video or audio) is contained in a separate MXF wrapper file. The video MXF
files are in the VIDEO subfolder, and the audio MXF files are in the AUDIO subfolder. XML
files in the CLIP subfolder contain the associations between essence files and the
metadata associated with them. However, in the Content Browser a single clip is
displayed.
For example, a high-resolution mxf file, a low-resolution MP4 file and a companion XML
are displayed in the Content Browser as a single clip.

Spanned Clips
When a shot or take is recorded requiring more than the file size limit of a medium, a filebased camcorder starts another file, and continues recording the shot to that file without
interruption. This is referred to as clip spanning because the shot spans more than one file
or clip. Similarly, a file-based camcorder sometimes spans a shot across clips on different
cards or disks, if the camcorder has more than one card or disk loaded. It records the shot
until it runs out of room on the first medium, then starts a new file on the next medium with
available space, and continues recording the shot to it. Although a single shot or take can
be recorded to a group of multiple spanned clips, it is designed to be treated as a single
clip.
If all the clips and files forming the spanned sequence are present and all the memory
cards containing the spanned sequence are inserted and selected in the Explorer, then the
clip is displayed with an
icon in the Content Browser.
If you deselect a memory card in the Explorer that contains part of the spanned sequence,
then the clip will be displayed with an
icon in the Content Browser.
Note
Spanning can only be detected for source devices of the type P2, XF and
XDCam.

Consolidation Bin to the Stack Bin, click the Stack Bin button.

The Stack Bin is a basket into which you can drop clips to be ingested. The clips can
originate from the Content Browser, the Player View and the Consolidation Bin. Clips from
the Player View can be full clips or subclips created from the clip loaded in the Player
View. Clips from the Consolidation Bin are playlists, i.e. a number of clips merged
together into a single clip.
It allows you to manually or automatically start the ingest of each clip and playlist and
monitor the status and progress of each ingest and process step. You can reorder clips,
subclips and playlists even if the ingest is already in progress and stop workflows if
necessary.

Selecting Clips
To select all clips in one go in the Stack Bin, click
