Hotel Access System using Digital QR Code and Near Field Communication via Smartphone

2.

Background of the Study

According to the Philippine National Police (PNP) the number of crimes committed
nationwide increased by about 46 percent during the first six months of the year as compared to
the same period last year. Records from the PNP Directorate for Investigation and Detective
Management (DIDM) showed that theft, car theft, physical injuries and rape were among the
crimes that had a huge increase.(Some insights into our national security situation | The Manila
Times Online, n.d.)

Presently, it was clear that some of the percentage committed in theft cases happened in
the Hotel Industry, due to the in and out of travelers especially foreigners who find safe place in
hotel rooms.

Last March 2010, a tourist from Bangkok, Thailand reported a crime to the Philippine
National Police where he claimed to be a victim of thefts in one of the hotels in Ermita, Manila,
Philippines. The tourist guy reported that as a bad surprise the next day after he checked in, when
he wanted to check out. Almost EUR 680 to in total EUR 200 were missing, estimated a stash of
10,000 to 25,000 Philippines peso had been missing. As per report, during the night he have been
out before, somebody with the spare key or a copy took the money from the safety deposit box of
his room. Also there was an existing report from one of the guests of Hotel H2O in Luneta,
Manila, Philippines (Behind the Quirino Grandstand) where the guest wasfrightened because the
room keys for that floor were all coded to the same lock, which is very possible to accessing
other room doors.

Hotel Access System using Digital QR Code and Near Field Communication via Smartphone

Currently, Philippine Hotels offers different kind of security system in their room
accommodation and amenities, such as the use of Magnetic cards, Number lock passwords,
Biometrics, Tap Ids using NFC and the traditional metallic keys. But due to the alarming increase
of burglars in the Philippines, it is obviously clear that Philippine Hotels fail to offer a onehundred percent of safety and security to the guests. This simple flaw in hotel door locks leaves
millions of guests susceptible and unsafe to robberies and break-ins. Regardless of the reason,
this type of security breach is unacceptable at any hotel.(Philippine crime rate up by 46% |
Metro, News, The Philippine Star | philstar.com, n.d.)

With the prior safety and security concerns and functional flaws of existing Door Lock
Access System in the Philippines, this serious safety issue comes up with an idea of improving
and innovating the traditional way of locking and unlocking system in the Philippines. This study
aims to improve the hotel security system in the Philippines by designing a new and innovative
idea of creating an electronic door lock system with the use of Digital QR Code and NFC using
mobile phones.

Needs Statement
Security is one of the major problems in the Philippines, whether in houses, banks and

other buildings. According to the Philippine National Police Directorate for Investigation and
Detective Management, Crime is one of the major concerns in urban and rural areas of the
Philippines, crimes involving theft, physical assault, and robbery were the top three most
common crimes reported to local authorities in 2013.
Hotel Theft incident in the Philippines is becoming a serious problem in the industry. One
of the more threatening and possible dangerous case that may occur to a family or business
traveler is a hotel room invasion robbery. A hotel room invasion take place when burglars force
their way into an occupied hotel or motel room to execute their plan of robbery and other crimes.
It is terrifying because it trespasses and violates the private space that acts as the temporary place
while far away from home. Some travelers may get trauma and takes time to recover from the
experience and involvement of being abused and violated while in a hotel room in a strange city.

higher level of security while offering integration opportunities with time management and
building automation systems.

Percent Market Share Analysis

Based on the proprietors research, the companies considered to be the top or major
security lock provider in Philippines are Yale Lock Company, Master Lock, Goodhand88, Hi- R
Technology And Service Co., and Smartcard Technik Inc. these companies provide the 70% of
the security door lock market, several companies who fare very well in the worldwide market
still have yet to achieve a large share of the Philippine market.(Hotel boom in Manila offers
hope to Philippine tourism | Reuters, n.d.)
According to the Philippine Statistics Authority the number of establishments in the
Philippines is obtained through final results of the 2009 Annual Survey of Philippine Business
and Industry (ASPBI) conducted nationwide recorded a total of 14,998 Hotel and Restaurant
establishments in the Philippines. Hotels, camping sites and other provisions of short-stay
accommodation comprised the remaining number of establishments with 1,650 or 11.0 percent.

Evaluation of alternative solutions /Design Trade-offs

Alternative Solution 1
BLUETOOTH

Hotel Access System using Digital QR Code and Near Field Communication via Smartphone

Bluetooth is a wireless technology standard for exchanging data over short distances
(using short-wavelength UHF radio waves in the ISM band from 2.4 to 2.485 GHz) from fixed
and mobile devices, and building personal area networks (PANs).It can connect several devices,
overcoming problems of synchronization. The main advantage of Bluetooth is that it is easily
available and in reach of common people. It consumes very less battery power and requires less
processing power for processing. The synced Bluetooth devices does not need clear line of sight
between them and the chances of other wireless networks interfering with Bluetooth are very
low. The disadvantage of Bluetooth is that the battery usage during a single transfer is negligible,
but if Bluetooth is kept on whole day, then battery loss is significant and because of this it
inevitably eats into the battery of these devices, and lowers the battery life considerably. The
other disadvantage of Bluetooth is that the security in Bluetooth is good but it is much better in
infrared technology.

Alternative Solution 2
BARCODE

A Barcode is a visual representation of data that is scanned and interpreted for

information. Each barcode contains a certain code which works as a tracking technology for
products; and is represented in a sequence of lines or other shapes. It is good to use the Barcode
since it is much smaller and lighter than others and therefore easier to use. Less expensive than
tags; as barcodes are directly printed onto plastic or paper materials and therefore the only cost
involved is the ink; a tiny overall cost. Barcodes work with the same accuracy on various
materials in which they are placed. Barcodes are a universal technology in that they are the norm

Hotel Access System using Digital QR Code and Near Field Communication via Smartphone

for retail products; stores that own a barcode reader can process barcodes from anywhere in the
world. In many cases, barcode accuracy has been said to be the same or even better than RFID
tags. Today, barcodes are found on almost every item and there are no privacy issue involved
with its use. Barcode scanners need a direct line of sight to the barcode to be able to read, but
Barcode also has its limitation. They are very labour intensive; as they must be scanned
individually. Barcodes have less security than RFID, as they can be more easily reproduced or
forged. Barcodes are more easily damaged; as the line of sight is needed to scan, the printed bar
code has to be exposed on the outside of the product. If a barcode is ripped or damaged there is
no way to scan the product.

Alternative Solution 3
RFID (RADIO-FREQUECY IDENTIFICATION)

The new electronic locking systems are one of the fastest changing elements of hotel
designs. The use of newer technology such as RFID was in trend all over the world. The
advantage of using the RFID was it has low battery notification. Maintenance, (with less moving
parts and no magnetic swipe reader, the locks are less prone to malfunctions and as such as easier
to manage from a maintenance standpoint), Key farbs and other devices (marketing potential),
(The use of non-traditional means to store the RFID tags allows for creativity from a marketing
standpoint. The keys can be facilitated via a number of different mediums including: cards,
key farbs, golf green repair tools and cell phones), Wristbands for Waterparks (The RFID tags
can be placed in waterproof wristbands to allow for use in resort and theme park environments.
This is particularly advantageous for children and guests who do not want to carry a card around

Hotel Access System using Digital QR Code and Near Field Communication via Smartphone

or fear that it will get lost.) , Electronic Wallet/Cashless Purchases (RFID tags can be used in
place of traditional cash or credit cards. It allows guests and patrons to make purchases without
having to carry the traditional methods of payment with them.), Unmanned Hotels Slated, (there
is a project in Japan that aims to allow guests who book hotel stays online to utilize the RFIDenabled credit card to obtain a key for their room. This will enable guests to bypass the front
desk altogether and go straight to their rooms), Cellular Phone Integration, Track Administrative
Staff (By utilizing cards or RFID tags that have storage capacity, the activities of all operational
staff including housekeepers, engineering and security can be tracked. This information can be
utilized to verify productivity and other key operational requirements), Ease of Use (NoMagnetic
Swipe Malfunctions). With no invasive contact with the locking mechanism, the locks are not
prone to mag-swipe and other access malfunctions. There are no magnetic swipes that can be demagnetized. Also, it can read RFID tags from a greater distance than barcodes. RFID tags dont
need to be positioned in a line of sight with the scanner. RFID tags can be read at a faster rate
than barcodes; as approximately 40 RFID tags can be read at the same time. RFID tags can work
within much greater distances; information can be read from a tag at up to 300 ft. RFID tags are
read/write devices. RFID contain high levels of security; data can be encrypted, password
protected or set to include a kill feature to remove data permanently. RFID tags carry large data
capabilities such as product maintenance, shipping histories and expiry dates; which can all be
programmed to the tag. Once these are set up; it can be run with minimal human participation.
RFID tags are more reusable and rugged as they are protected by a plastic cover.
But somehow, RFID has its own weakness. Despite their reliability, RFID systems can
still have problems. RFID systems are still typically more expensive to set up and use than
alternative systems such as optical scanning. Although readers can scan through most non-

Hotel Access System using Digital QR Code and Near Field Communication via Smartphone

metallic materials, they have problems with metal and water. The fact that you can scan multiple
objects in a range is a benefit, but also comes with possible issues that can cause malfunctions.
Tag collision may occur if a reader picks up signals from multiple tags at the same time. Reader
collision may be an issue if two readers interfere with each others signals. RFID also brings up
some security issues. Unauthorized devices may be able to read and even change data on tags
without the knowledge of the person who owns the object. Side-channel attacks can pick up
RFID data as it passes from a tag to a reader, which could give the attacker access to passwords
or information that should be secure. Some states have privacy statutes to restrict activities that
might use RFID technology to collect personal information. RFID involves assembling and
inserting a computerized chip; which works out to be more expensive. RFID readers struggle
picking up information when passing through metal or liquid. Reader collision can occur where
two signals from different readers overlap and the tag is unable to respond to both. Tag collision
can occur when numerous tags in the same area respond at the same time. RFID still has two
separate chips (read only and readable/writable), which cannot be read by the same machine.

Alternative Solution 4
BIOMETRICS

Biometric lock system does not use a key to unlock doors. They also do not use cards that
are swiped on readers. Instead, your fingerprint or face will be scanned to gain access to a

Hotel Access System using Digital QR Code and Near Field Communication via Smartphone

specific door. There are also those that use voice recognition or eye scanning. The most popular
type of biometric lock system used is fingerprint scanning. Place your finger on the scanner and
if it matches on the list of authorized people, the door will be opened.
Like any other system, biometric lock also has its advantages and disadvantages. By
using this system, you never have to worry about your lost keys, key change or lock change. It is
more secured because there are no keys to duplicate, locks to pick or cards to tamper as the
fingerprint, voice, eyes or face of the individual are used to unlock doors.
The obvious disadvantage of this system is its price. The installation of the system is
more expensive compared to other systems. Various issues may also affect its accuracy. For
instance, the scanner may have problems reading the fingerprint of people whose hands are
always exposed to chemicals because of their work. The eyes and voice of individuals may also
be a factor.

Alternative Solution 5
MAGNETIC STRIPE TAPE

Magnetic stripe tape is a tool for encoding data on items such as credit, debit and security
access cards. These stripes act as small magnets attached to cards that when run through a
magnetic stripe reader recognizes a card and connects to a computer. This technology has been in
use since the 1960s. While systems using magnetic readers are common, there are some
disadvantages with the systems. Here are some: Close contact, the reader and card stripe must be in
close proximity for the system to work. This often means that the card must come into direct
contact with the reader for the system to scan the card. E easily damaged. The magnetic stripe on

Hotel Access System using Digital QR Code and Near Field Communication via Smartphone

the back of a card can be damaged easily by exposure to high magnetic fields or through
repeated use. Frequently used cards still might work but require multiple scanning attempts
before the card reader system recognizes the data. Not Secure. The magnetic stripe reader system
also is not secure. The data usually is not encrypted as securely as "smart card" technologies that
store much more data using a microchip inserted into the card. Readers that fall into the wrong
hands can easily be manipulated to steal data from unsuspecting victims. While, also it will not
be approve to exist if it dont have any good effect on the technology, so heres some of the good
effect of Magnetic Stripe Card: Universality, Magnetic stripe cards are used across the globe and
in many professional sectors. Convenience, a swipe card is convenient as it enables a person to
carry large sums of money without actually carrying cash in hand. Security magnetic cards are
small and inconspicuous. Swipe cards offer the owner privacy, as the magnetic stripe doesn't
contain data in human-readable form. The information stored within the magnetic stripe is highly
secure and uses the latest data encryption standards.

SUMMARY

In summarizing the research, the proprietors need to examine both positive and negative
components of the new technology and compare them to each other based on the data gathered
from each of the existing technology.

Hotel Access System using Digital QR Code and Near Field Communication via Smartphone

NFC technology consumes little power when compared to standard Bluetooth

technology.NFC connects automatically in a fraction of a second, so fast it seems
instantaneous. QR codes use a specific open standard to contain specific data in the code itself it can be used to execute a variety of commands - the most common of which is the access
control, Bluetooth requires users to manually set up connections between smartphones and takes
several seconds.
NFC and QR codes serve a similar function in that they enable a link between physical
and digital content. The list of NFC-enable mobile devices is still getting longer and longer,
however that list is missing one major producer. The iPhone by Apple by evaluation, almost all
phones released in the previous years are able to scan barcodes especially smartphones.
Although NFC is considered a subset of Radio Frequency Identification (RFID), NFC
can address all the applications that the earlier commercially mature technologies could not, and
with proper security. NFC has succeeded in addressing the security and privacy concerns
common in RFID technology, NFC's security features allow its data to be encrypted and
transferred without fear of unwanted listening devices. The readers for RFID are also larger and
more powerful network or handheld devices requiring larger antennas and more electrical power.
The top reasons why a QR code are better than RFID because the square code is different and
can easily be on any surface that it is printed and showed on, producing a QR code is a lot
cheaper and is obviously hassle-free one can generate a QR code on their smartphones. QR
codes are network oriented and more flexible.
The number one trend is secure data by using encryption, tokenization and biometric
authentication. In the number of high profile security breache, Biometrics are increasingly

Hotel Access System using Digital QR Code and Near Field Communication via Smartphone

perceived as a key way to enhance end user identification and transactional authentication, across
an array of technologies.
Magnetic Stripe Tape, QR Code and NFC mobile application share common features and
represent a new wave of functional control access applications. But, when it comes to security,
NFC and QR code has an edge over the Magnetic Stripe. One of NFCs applications, however, is
enabling contactless application via mobile devices, in addition to its much broader applications
for data transfer, keyless door entry and much more, the problem with Magnetic Stripe Card is
that it is very outdated, companies nowadays are phasing out this technology, since there are a lot
more secure application that this. The code encrypted in the black stripe is permanent, so through
the times, the same code is going to be used, which will be easier for the bad people to access the
code especially this days that too many scams in ATM machine are revolving around.
Many people are consuming and using smartphones these days, and almost every new
phone has innovations to make life stress-free and more comfortable. One of many innovations
to the smartphone is Near Field Communication (NFC), which provides the ability to transmit
information over a short distance. NFC has the potential to bring numerous benefits to its users,
including the access control. And through the innovation of the engineering students, for
protection and security purposes, QR Code has been added to support the lacking features of
NFC.

Hotel Access System using Digital QR Code and Near Field Communication via Smartphone

These good reads helped the researchers to critic and study more about the parameters of
NFC, QR Codes and other alternatives to be considered. If you synthesize all of the alternatives,
you can see many similarities and differences of each medium from one another. Also, the
proprietors had encountered a hard time for comparing and providing a critical analysis on this
part, since the information gathered arent consistent.

The researchers also did a comparison on what microprocessor to use, since the idea of
the project is more critical on the software part than the hardware.

FINAL STATEMENT

With regards to this all alternative solutions given, among those 5, the best solution or
nearest idea to the Near Field Communication and Digital QR code medium is the use of
Bluetooth, since the means of transmitting the data, information and signal are much closer to the
idea of using the NFC and QR codes than any other alternative solution. However, This
Bluetooth provides less security to the user than using the NFC and QR Code for lock, also as
stated above, Bluetooth have the most power consumption among any others.
The group have designed a system and method to control locks (e.g., hotel, home and
business door locks) using a smartphone and QR code. In using the NFC and QR Code through
locking and locking the door, the user will just need to have a smartphone in order to access
his/her private room. This hotel management system offers a more secure feature since the
prototype will going to use the most secure way of accessing ones room, which is through the
combination of the NFC and QR Code.

Hotel Access System using Digital QR Code and Near Field Communication via Smartphone

Handheld phones today have now the NFC tag for better communication, but this offer is
limited to some mobile phones. Since some phones do not have the capability of using the NFC,
the group had planned to innovate the existing product and conducted some research about
improving the home or room security. The group added a medium that will support the need of
the non-NFC smartphones user, which is the QR code. The QR Code will back-up those phone
users who dont have NFC.
NFC is still making its way to the mainstream. Surprisingly enough, this technology has
already made a big mark in the industry, but has seemingly created a little implementation. So far
the group had developed an easy-to-install system that allows you to unlock your front door by
simply flapping or touching your phone in front of the door handle, this system lets you
indistinctly lock and unlock doors, in case a family member or friend without keys needs entry.
The system also offer an even check in to a hotel and go directly to the room without first having
to visit the front desk, the group wanted to discover the use of NFC phones for a variety of
services. However, the group is still looking and studying for other potentials of the NFC in its
security features.
In the other hand, through the use of the QR code, users receive a QR code associated
with a specific door via a mobile phone application to their device, which displays the machinereadable optical label on its screen. A QR code scanner connects to the door lock mechanism
through a processor (e.g., a microcontroller or remote processor accessed over a network), which
autonomously sends a command to open the door lock when the proper QR code is decoded. The
QR code can be managed and generated by a third party private server maintained by the end
client or its agents.

Hotel Access System using Digital QR Code and Near Field Communication via Smartphone

Thus, seeing the great potential of these 2, it will make a great tandem in proving the best
security especially in the field of hospitality industry.
