Story & History of Heise

Heise is pronounced, hi-see the final e being silent. A
German immigrant named Richard Clamor Heise came to the
area in 1889. He found the hot spring water an aid to healing
wounds and relieving rheumatism. He then homesteaded the
property and started to make improvements building swimming
pools, a hotel, store, and post office. This gave the public a
real healthy resort and a recreation center. After his death in
1921, his daughter, Bertha Gavin managed Heise Hot Springs.
People came from different areas using a ferry to cross the river.
In May of 1938, Mrs. Gavin had a much needed bridge built.
In 1941, Bob and Elsie Quinn bought Heise. They remodeled the hot pool and built a big pool. Then also added
an RV park and restored the lodge building. In 1960 Bob passed away, leaving Elsie with the business. Her son,
Mike and his wife, Elaine helped with the business. Later Mike purchased it from his mother.
Mike saw the opportunity for the business to expand. He
updated the pool area, added sun decks and put in a 350
foot enclosed water slide, a new building was built for
the Snack Bar and a place to check in customers for the
summer pool. Throughout the years more RV spots were
put in as well as picnic shelters and cabins. In 1970 Mike
came up with another idea of building a pizza parlor and
a 9 hole golf course. At that time the land was flat pasture
land. Mike had help from a good family friend named
Chuck Demming, superintendent of the Idaho Golf
Courses. A John Deer tractor with a scraper framed the
dirt for tee boxes and greens. Mike spent many hours on
the tractor. After fairways were seeded and growing, Mike
and his son Robbie planted many trees no higher than 2 feet tall. Now the trees are mature and create screens
between the holes. Over the years the golf course has been an attraction to the local golfers. It is an executive golf
course with two par 4 holes and seven par 3s. During the summer there is a men and womens golf league, which
is very popular for the locals. The Pizza Parlor was built with the help of Tom Tomita. Logs came from Hamilton,
Montana. Stacking the logs took two days and that was the easy part. Then came the roof, doors, windows and
chinking. The original equipment came from another restaurant and has been updated throughout the years. The
Pizza Parlor has steadily improved and has a reputation for its excellent pizza. The dough and pizza sauce are
made from a special recipe and the vegetables are always fresh. Through its many changes over the years, Heise
has remained an ideal place for family reunions, company parties or just for hanging out. Heise offers hot pools,
summer pools with a 350 foot water slide, snack bar, pizza parlor, 9 hole golf course, RV spots, cabins, picnic
shelters, and guided fishing trips.
A special thanks to all of you for making our business successful.
