Northern Tanzania - Birds & Big Game

Peru Ancash Extension

Central Peru

Our Northern Tanzania - Birds & Big Game tour targets a

wonderful assortment of Tanzanias endemic bird species
while also spending ample time exploring the regions most
well-renowned wildlife reserves such as the Serengeti and
Ngorongoro Crater. Here we will no doubt find ourselves
marvelling at some of the highest concentrations of
wildlife to be found anywhere on our planet and we stand
excellent chances of finding the fabulous Big 5! This
tour certainly bears a resemblance to our extremely popular
Kenya & Tanzania Birds & Big Game tour, however
instead of venturing into neighbouring Kenya, we explore
several sites in the beautiful Eastern Arc Mountains of
Tanzania, home to a unique suite of fabulous birds. Many
of these are endemic or highly localised and possibilities
include gems such as Uluguru Violet-backed Sunbird,
Green-headed Oriole, Fischers Turaco, Usambara Akalat
and Usambara Weaver. This unique tour showcases the
very best that Tanzania has to offer from a birding and
wildlife perspective and with a small group size of just 6
participants allows for an extremely personal experience.

Our new Peru Ancash Extension takes in the seldomtravelled Cordillera Blanca, an impressive range of snowcapped and glacier-riddled mountains some 200km north
of Lima.

New Zealand Highlights

South Island Takahe by Adam Riley

Our New Zealand Highlights tour showcases a stunning

variety of this countrys unique island endemics in a
shorter package than our standard tours and is a perfect fit
for those with limited time.

Papua New Guinea Highlights

Stitchbird, both North and South Island Saddlebacks,

bizarre Wrybill, Orange-fronted Parakeet, Yellowhead and
Rifleman. With excellent lodgings and meals, awe-inspiring
scenery and fabulously friendly Kiwis, this is a fantastic
tour for both birders and non-birding spouses alike and
offers a splendid overview of this remarkable region!

Our new Papua New Guinea Highlights tour has been

specifically crafted to take in the regions very best sites,
from Mount Hagen and the Tari Valley to the lowlands of
Varirata, and is specifically designed for those with less time
to spare in the field, yet still wishing for a comprehensive
overview of this exceptional land. Time is spent in areas
rich with avian diversity giving ample opportunity for
finding many of the areas most sought-after species.
Fabulous birds-of-paradise will feature highly, while we
will also enjoy some incredible fruit doves, kingfishers,
parrots, honeyeaters, bowerbirds and a couple of endemic
families such as berrypeckers and longbills. This tour can
also be linked with our New Britain Endemics Extension
for a wonderful two week exploration.

New Tours for 2016

In addition, culturally Thailand has few equals, and we will

have opportunities to visit some of the many spectacular
pagodas and shrines that adorn this friendly, varied and
spectacular land.

Silver-breasted Broadbill by Dave Semler

Known as the Andean Switzerland, this is an incredibly

picturesque range of the mighty Andes and possesses a fine
selection of rarely-seen endemics and specialities as well
as probably the largest Polylepis forests in all of South
America. We take in both the arid desert coast en route to
higher ground and then bird through stunning forests and
paramo grasslands before returning to Lima for the start of
our Classic Peru main tour. Highly sought-after species on
this short tour include both Great and Rufous-backed IncaFinches, White-cheeked Cotinga, Ancash Tapaculo, Giant
Conebill, Stripe-headed Antpitta, Coastal and Thick-billed
Miners and Raimondis Yellow Finch.

Thailand Highlights

New Zealand supports a host of unusual endemic land birds

as well as a rich assemblage of marine birds and mammals.
Iconic species from kiwis and South Island Takahe to
Weka and New Zealand Kaka are all on the target list. New
Zealand is rightly famous for pelagic birding and we will
partake of three pelagics where albatross feature strongly
together with various shearwaters, petrels and the recently
rediscovered New Zealand Storm Petrel. Additional targets
include the strange North Island Kokako, endangered

Our new Thailand Highlights tour is designed around the

very best birding sites in Northern and Central Thailand,
offering a superb selection of spectacular and soughtafter South East Asian specials, along with a huge array
of migrants from the north which spend the frigid winters
in these warmer climes. Time will be spent exploring
the wetlands near Bangkok where we stand excellent
chances of finding the critically endangered Spoon-billed
Sandpiper, Nordmanns Greenshank and Chinese Egret.
Major reserves visited include Kaeng Krachan, Khao
Yai and Doi Inthanon where targets include the stunning
Green Peafowl, Siamese Fireback, Silver Pheasant,
gorgeous Silver-breasted Broadbill, Coral-billed Ground
Cuckoo, Blue Pitta, White-rumped Falcon, Ratchettailed Treepie, Green Cochoa and many, many more!

Raggiana Bird-of-Paradise by Markus Lilje

Garden Route of South Africa

Our new Dominican Highlights tour has been created

for those with limited time and a preference for comfort.
We shall base ourselves at one beautiful lodge for the
duration of the tour. With a smaller group of birders, we
can move more swiftly through the assortment of habitats
and endemics. Hispaniola ranks highest in the world as
a priority for bird protection, with habitat dwindling in
the Dominican Republic and all but erased from Haiti.
This 6 day birding tour provides a realistic opportunity to
observe nearly all of the islands 32 endemic bird species
including the Palmchat, a monotypic endemic Family no
less, the critically endangered Ridgways Hawk, 2 species
of Tody, a selection of Quail-Doves, plus many other
Greater Antillean specialties.

Our new Garden Route of South Africa tour offers a

diverse birding and mammal experience of our worldfamous south eastern coast. Starting from the Mother City
of Cape Town, we head inland, meandering through the
exquisite scenery of the Langeberg Mountains searching
for the localised endemic Agulhas Long-billed Lark and
Denhams Bustard. A short drive back to the coast will
see us visiting the Wilderness National Park for a host
of cryptic and rarely-seen species including the endemic
Knysna Warbler and Knysna Woodpecker. We then move
further up the coast to the Knysna Afromontane forests,
fynbos and coastal lagoons and estuaries of Plettenberg
Bay. The fynbos holds a number of endemics including
Cape Sugarbird, Cape Siskin, Orange-breasted Sunbird
and Victorins Warbler, while the forest might give us
Narina Trogon, Lemon Dove, African Emerald Cuckoo,
Scaly-throated Honeyguide, Southern Tchagra and Whitestarred Robin. The sheltered creeks and rivers host the
tricky African Finfoot and Half-collared Kingfisher. The
Greater Addo Elephant National Park is our last port of
call. While searching for the stately Secretarybird, Blue
Crane or Martial Eagle, we are certain to be distracted by
some of the 600 African Elephant, almost as many Cape
Buffalo and around 50 Black Rhinoceros.

Sapayoa by Adam Riley

Dominican Republic Highlights

Western Ecuador

Palmchat by Adam Riley

Our new Western Ecuador tour completes our tour

coverage of this incredibly diverse country. Long ignored
and historically tricky to reach, the lowland Choco forests
of North West Ecuador and the coastal littoral now make
for a very appealing adventure. Departing Quito we are
introduced to the Choco region with a bevy of normally
difficult species including Moss-backed Tanager, the
Choco endemic Indigo Flowerpiercer, Beautiful Jay, Choco
Vireo and Glistening-green Tanager. As we move into the
Choco lowlands, we target Long-wattled Umbrellabird,
the endemic Brown Wood Rail and even Banded Ground
Cuckoo if it is showing. Five-colored Barbet, Black-tipped
Cotinga, Lita and Choco Woodpeckers, Yellow-green
Bush Tanager and Golden-chested Tanager provide the
supporting cast for the drab but monotypic Sapayoa and
the exceedingly tricky Rufous-crowned Antpitta. Leaving
the Choco forests behind, we travel along Ecuadors
Pacific shores visiting Isla de las Plata for the much
sought-after Waved Albatross, both Blue-footed and Nazca
Boobies, Humpback Whales and Red-billed Tropicbirds
before completing our journey searching for the endemic
Esmeraldas Woodstar, Pacific Royal Flycatcher, Elegant
Crescentchest, Chilean Flamingo and the smallest bird in
South America, the Short-tailed Woodstar.

Knysna Woodpecker by Steve Davis

Originally from the Netherlands, Duan spent much of his

youth birding throughout Europe before relocating to the
undisputed birding continent of South America. While
Quito, Ecuador is home, Duan has traversed not only the
Neotropics, but much of the globe. A keen photographer
and sound recordist, he also holds an MSc in Ornithology.
Considered one of the foremost Neotropical guides, he will
be full time on the Rockjumper team from November 2015.
Trevor Ellery
Originally from Hampshire, Trevor Ellery spent time living and
birding in Israel and Ecuador before settling in Colombia. Trevor
has guided numerous birding trips throughout Colombia, and
has also taken part in expeditions to its remotest corners with
the ProAves NGO. A keen photographer, sound recordist and
passionate conservationist Trevor has travelled extensively in
South America. When not guiding Trevor can often be found
assisting Colombian conservation projects or sneaking off in search of new birds for
his Colombia list. A keen mountain biker Trevor also holds a BA Hons in History.
Trevor will be joining the Rockjumper team from January 2016.
Heinz Ortmann
Heinz hails from South Africas Kwa-Zulu Natal Midlands.
His passion for conservation led to an Honours degree in
Conservation Ecology focusing on the management of African
Wild Dogs. Heinz completed an MSc in Conservation Biology
at the Percy FitzPatrick Institute of African Ornithology in Cape
Town which included a 3-month stay on Nightingale Island in the
South Atlantic Ocean where he studied one of the worlds rarest
birds, Wilkins Finch. Heinz has also worked as an observer on fishing vessels off the
coast of Cape Town for BirdLife South Africa, recording information on albatross and
other seabird species, as well as working as an environmental consultant specializing
on the impacts of mining on bird species occurring in wetland areas of South Africa.

Solomon Islands Endemics

Home to millions of birdwatchers and indeed many of the

worlds finest ornithologists, the UK is a surprisingly good
birding destination. Our Best of Great Britain tour is timed
to see virtually all of the British Isles regular breeding
birds, a total of around 200 species. Avian highlights
include colonies of Atlantic Puffin and Black Guillemot,
Eurasian Bittern, Corn Crake, Red Kite, White-tailed
Eagle, the rare Western Capercaillie, Black Grouse,
Eurasian Dotterel, Bearded Reedling, Dartford Warbler
and Scottish Crossbill. In addition to the avifauna, Great
Britain is blessed with many familiar historical sites and
some wonderful scenery. We will visit the rolling hills of
the Scottish Highlands, the ancient woodlands and offshore islands of Northumberland, and the beautiful Welsh
coastline where we explore the historic Conwy area, Isle
of Anglesey and the picturesque and wild Lleyn Peninsula.
Other notable historical sites and attractions include a visit
to Penrhyn Castle, the historic town of Caernarfon and its
dramatic castle, site of the investiture of Prince Charles,
a visit to Snowdon, the highest peak in Wales, and the
Roman Hadrians Wall stretching across Cumbria and
Northumberland.

The remote Solomon Islands have for many years featured

highly on birders hit lists, however access has proved
challenging and very few birders have ever actually
visited the region. Part of the allure is that the Solomon
Islands boast one of the highest levels of avian endemism
on Earth and our ground breaking tour will attempt to
locate as many of these seldom-observed specialities as
possible. High priority species include Sanfords Sea
Eagle, Rennell Shrikebill, Solomons Cuckooshrike,
Roviana and Woodfords Rails, White-headed Fruit
Dove, Duchess Lorikeet and a plethora of other fabulous
endemics including a chance for the very rare Black-faced
Pitta. Join us for an exotic island adventure and become
one of only a handful of birders to have seen some of this
spectacular regions striking endemics.

New Tour Leaders

Gareth Robbins
Raised in Cape Town, Gareth studied Game Ranging and
Lodge Management before working as a naturalist guide at
various Southern African game lodges. Having decided that
birds were his prime interest, Gareth then spent a number of
years guiding bird tours along South Africas Garden Route.
During this time he continued his studies and qualified as a
tour guide and specialist bird guide. Gareth is a very sharp
birder and has been rapidly expanding his experience of African birds since he
joined the Rockjumper team on a full time basis in June 2015.

Falkland Islands
Situated in the South Atlantic, the Falkland Islands (or Islas
Malvinas) have experienced a rather interesting recent
history with several countries having staked a claim for
them over the past few hundred years. Controversy aside,
the Falklands offer up a sumptuous wildlife spectacle and
visitors can expect up-close-and-personal encounters with
a variety of different species.

Greg de Klerk
As a young boy who was raised in Durban, Greg found his
passion and interest in all aspects of the natural world thus he
ended up studying Game Ranging and Lodge Management.
For more than a decade, Greg worked as a naturalist and
specialist bird guide at well-recognised luxury lodges on the
western border of the Greater Kruger National Park gaining
some of the highest qualifications available in the industry.
While birding has long been his central focus, Greg also had the privilege of
working closely on the re-introduction and study of the endangered Cheetah.

Bearded Reedling by Niels Poul Dreyer

Penguins such as King, Southern Rockhopper, Gentoo,

Magellanic and Macaroni all breed on the Falklands, while
albatross colonies are another highlight. A variety of other
endemics and specials will also be sought and include
Cobbs Wren, Falkland Steamer Duck, Ruddy-headed
Goose, Striated Caracara and an exciting selection of
petrels and shearwaters. Add to this an assortment of marine
mammals such as South American Sea Lion, Commersons
and Peales Dolphins, Leopard Seal and Southern Elephant
Seal and you have the makings of a fabulous tour. We
will visit a total of five islands including Pebble, Carcass
and famous Sea Lion where we have fabulous chances of
watching Orca as they pursue fur seals and sea lions close
to shore. This tour to these remote islands will provide
phenomenal photographic opportunities.

Central Peru

Our endemic-targeted Central Peru tour adds yet another

incredible destination to our coverage of one of the worlds
most diverse birding countries. Packed to the rafters with
endemics and potentially new-to-science species, we take in
some justly famous sites without requiring any internal flights.

Pardusco by Dubi Shapiro

Southern Rockhopper Penguin by Adam Riley

New Tours for 2017

Departing Lima, we first ascend the Andes through

the Santa Eulalia Valley, home to Diademed Plover
and the critically endangered White-bellied Cinclodes,
before topping out around Lago Junin to search for the
endangered Junin Grebe, restricted to this single locality.
Traversing the Central Andes, we visit Bosque Unchog
and the famous Carpish Mountains. Bay Antpitta, Goldenbacked Mountain Tanager, Pardusco and Bay-vented
Cotinga are some of the highlights of this area. Dropping
down to the eastern foothills, we search for the endemic
Creamy-bellied Antwren and Foothill Elaenia. We then
return to the mountains scouring some rarely-visited
valleys for the endemic Fiery-throated Metaltail, Eyeringed and Vilcabamba Thistletails, Tschudis Tapaculo
and the recently described Black-spectacled Brush Finch.

Peru Iquitos Extension

Our new Peru Iquitos Extension fills a good number
of gaps in ones life list, covering the white sand forests
of Allpahuayo-Mishana Nature Reserve for the endemic
Allpahuayo Antbird, Mishana Tyrannulet and Iquitos
Gnatcatcher, as well as spending a large amount of time in
the Sucusari Reserve and the Amazon Canopy Walkway.
Well divide our time between the numerous trails as well
as the canopy walkway, searching out some of the trickiest
Amazonian species including Nocturnal Curassow, Blacknecked Red Cotinga, Ochre-striped Gnatcatcher, Whitewinged Trumpeter and Rufous Potoo.
