MCA TESTING DATES
Fifth graders will be taking three
different MCA tests this spring:
math, reading, and science. It is very
important that students are present at
school these days and get plenty of
rest the night before. We are
confident that students will do well!!

 WHAT HAVE WE BEEN UP TO?
In math this week, we worked on graphing
ordered pairs on a coordinate grid. Students also
reviewed classifying shapes in a short geometry unit
focusing on polygons and angles of polygons. Next
week, we will start an algebra unit that covers
exponents, order of operations, and solving equations.
Continue to practice those math facts at home!!
We finished work with our IB Planner, titled
Civil Struggles. The central idea of this planner is that
societies have civil conflicts due to differences. This
week students worked hard writing letters to a partner
in class for their summative assessment project.
Students should be very proud of their hard work. They
also evaluated their peers and reflected on what they
learned in this planner.
In spelling, our list had a focus on words with
the sound of /sh/ spelled in different ways. Our list also
had words with the endings –ian, -ion, and –tion. Next
week our class will begin a short writer’s workshop
that covers several writing strategies.
Students worked hard this week and completed
the MCA math test. Next week, students will take the
MCA reading test.
It gets harder and harder to concentrate during
Spring time in fifth grade. Please remind your child to
be responsible with turning work in on time and being
respectful to everyone. We have had many classroom
discussions about making good choices. We are trying
to instill good habits as they make the transition on to
middle school next year.
DARE ESSAY
Students need to write (or type) a one-page essay in
order to graduate from DARE. This must be finished
outside of class. Officer Just will be back in the middle
of May to collect them and choose one from each class
to read at our graduation ceremony in June.
Students should turn in their essay to their classroom
teacher by Friday, May 7.
SPRING CARNIVAL

Our class is collecting items for
the basket fundraiser the entire
month of April. Our classroom
was assigned the theme
White Bear Spirit.
Please donate any new or family
friendly items that fit this theme.
Donations of cash, gift cards, or
checks made out to Matoska
International Parent Board will
also be accepted. $1.00 tickets
will be sold the night of the
Enjoying the nice Spring weather
carnival and winning tickets will
be drawn for each basket at the
end of the night.
Pre-Engineering Camp
For students entering grades 6, 7, and 8
Gateway academy is a week-long engineering camp in
which campers work together in a fun, exciting
environment. Boys and girls interested in learning how
things work, or who are interested in careers in science,
technology, engineering, and mathematics are encouraged
to enroll. Field trips will include visits to the Fab Lab at
Century College and the Science Museum of MN.
Participants are asked to bring bag lunches each day.
