Plan-Do-Check-Act Procedure
1. Plan. Recognize an opportunity and plan a change.
2. Do. Test the change. Carry out a small-scale study.
3. Study. Review the test, analyze the results and identify
what youve learned.
4. Act. Take action based on what you learned in the study
step: If the change did not work, go through the cycle
again with a different plan. If you were successful,
incorporate what you learned from the test into wider
changes. Use what you learned to plan new
improvements, beginning the cycle again.
Plan-Do-Check-Act Example
The Pearl River, NY School District, a 2001 recipient of the
Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award, uses the PDCA
cycle as a model for defining most of their work processes, from
the boardroom to the classroom.
PDCA is the basic structure for the districts overall strategic
planning, needs-analysis, curriculum design and delivery, staff
goal-setting and evaluation, provision of student services and
support services, and classroom instruction.
Figure 2 shows their A+ Approach to Classroom Success. This
is a continuous cycle of designing curriculum and delivering
classroom instruction. Improvement is not a separate activity: It
is built into the work process.

Plan-Do-Check-Act (PDCA) cycle is a good form of applying quality nursing care to patients. I say good
because this is a simplified form of improving the quality of care given to every patient and add to the
fact that you could easily remember it. But there are some sort of misdirection is to what it truly means.
As indicated, the first part is to Plan but the real first task as defined by the author is to Analyze. It is
very confusing to say the least. Planning is obviously different from Analyzing. This also goes with the
Check step wherein the user should assess. This kind of process may be effective in other scenarios, but
for me, if the plan or the said process is very confusing at the beginning then as the application starts, it
will just continue to be a burden as you apply it.
The PDCA cycle remind me of the ADPIE model of nurses but in a very unorganized and confusing
appearance. The pdca cycle is very easy to use and remember. At first glance, it takes no time to
understand it but when viewed under a microscope it is messed up.
