History of Ireland

Around 250-300 b.C. Celts arrive in Ireland

On the year 432 saint Patrick arrives in Ireland and begins spreading the gospel to the Irish and Celtic
druids.
Monks during that time made historical records of the important events and folklore.
Vikings arrive in the year 795, they plundered towns and monasteries, but also founded many cities, like
Dublin.
In 1014 High King of Ireland Brian Boru defeated the Vikings in the battle of Clontarf
Normans arrive in 1169 and despite countless wars and rebellions, the Irish arent able to defeat them, and in
1534 King Henry VIII declared himself king of Ireland.
In 1802 Ireland became part of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland.
Between 1845 and 1851 there was a great famine, around a million people died and another million
emigrated.
In 1916 there was a rebellion against Britain known as the Easter Rising, which led to the Irish war of
independence from 1918 to 1921.
This in turn led to Ireland being split in 1920, into Northern Ireland and the Irish Free State.
In 1937 Eamon de Valera created a constitution, in which the Irish Free State became ire, and virtually, a republic.
In 1948 ire passes the Republic of Ireland Act, and in 1949 it is implemented, making ire into a republic, with no ties to
Britain.
This left Ireland in its current organization, divided in two parts, Northern Ireland of the UK and the Republic of Ireland.
