Bunbury has another gymnast!
BUNBURY may just have a new gymnastics talent to emulate Beth Tweddle. Bunbury
Primary School pupil Ella Burnett (7) is among the best young gymnasts in the region after
finishing second in the North West Compulsory Level 5 competition last month.

Road crash tragedy

A TEENAGE girl from Winsford died in a car crash on the A54 at Kelsall, near Gresty’s
Waste car park last month. The 17-year-old was a passenger in a Mini which left the road
on the way to Chester. The 18-year-old driver survived the crash with minor injuries.

Pupils’ tribute to Libby

PUPILS from Eaton Primary School cycled, walked and ran around Oulton Park race circuit
to raise funds for the charity Cardiac Risk in the Young. They undertook the charity work
in memory of Year 4 pupil Libby Moss who died suddenly last year from a heart problem.
School head teacher Darryl Pickering is hoping to compete the London Marathon this
month for the same cause.

On target for charity

A TOTAL of nearly £400 was raised for the Neuro Muscular Centre in Winsford as a result
of the charity indoor bowls tournament at Kelsall Community Centre. The event was won by
Richard Lightfoot and Ann Brown.

Yuk!! There’s dog poo on my shoe

This is a perennial problem and a continuing source of disquiet. Few things are more revolting
than finding that someone has trodden dog faeces into the house. As a dog owner for some 30
years I can vouch for the fact that even the average dog is
horrified by treading in it, writes Parish Cllr Richard Brierley
This note is a reminder to dog owners that it is an offence
to leave dog faeces in a public place and to do so can
result in a substantial fine. You might have noticed that
new stickers to that effect have appeared in the village,
supplementing the old Vale Royal signs put up a few years
ago. Our PCSO has powers to issue penalty notices to
offenders. So please clean up. Public places include not
only pavements and roads but also any open grassed
areas, footpaths, roadside verges etc..
Parish councillors are often asked why we do not have dog
waste bins in the village. We have made several attempts
to obtain them but could never get an undertaking that
they would be emptied. The official line is that bagged dog
faeces can be disposed of in the normal litter bins. The
problem that we have with this at present is that, although
we have adequate bins in the centre of the village, they are in short supply on most dog walking
routes in the outskirts. We are still working on this problem but up to now we have been refused
even replacements for bins destroyed in accidents.
The alternative is to take it home and put it in your dustbin – Not always a pleasant option in hot
weather with fortnightly collections. However, secure bagging and an application of ‘Freshbin’
generally solves the problem.

Best Kept Village Competition: Bringing the

The season is upon us once more and we have again entered the competition. We are
hoping to put last year’s disappointment behind us and repeat our success of 2008 by
becoming overall winner again in 2010.
The reason for entering is not just to generate a feel-good factor but also to encourage us
to consider what makes the village a pleasant place to live and to help us towards that end.
It also raises the profile of the village and, by making it attractive, encourages visitors to
spend time (and hopefully money) here.
This year we should have resolved the problems encountered in 2009 with late delivery of
lamp post baskets, patchy street cleaning and weed treatment etc. These are matters that
the parish council can address directly. We do, however depend on the efforts and good
offices of residents and businesses to make the whole thing work and we appeal to you all
to play your part in keeping the village smart and well presented.

he feel-good factor to Tarporley

Our High Street businesses usually do well and often generate
favourable comment, as do various of the village facilities. We
need to build on this and, for instance, minimise litter, weeds,
dog fouling, graffiti and chewing gum deposits, all of which are
marked.
The question is sometimes asked “Which day is judging?” - The
answer is any day between mid-April and the end of August. As
a judge myself I often pay spot visits when near ‘my’ villages in
addition to the minimum of two mandatory visits. Also, judges
do not confine themselves to the High Street but are expected to
cover the whole village, including outlying parts. So please keep
everywhere neat and tidy

Families come first at the Gunnery
WHY not pay a visit to Tarvin’s hidden gem that is The
Gunnery restaurant .
The venue has just picked up a prestigious Civic Trust award,
recognising excellence in redeveloping the site.
The Gunnery is owned by Sally Harris and her husband
Davin, who combine bringing up four children with running
the business.
“We’re all delighted with the award. It’s a very special building
which people will see when they come down,” said Sally.
It’s not just the brickwork that’s impressing customers. The
Gunnery is establishing a growing reputation as a fabulous
family dining experience.
Every effort is made to ensure the fare is locally sourced.
The restaurant stocks Grosvenor Estate venison, beer from
Mickle Trafford and asparagus from Tarvin as well as Wirral
watercress.
Sally added: “We aspire for The Gunnery to be a place where
families can come and eat local produce at its best.
“We’ve got a great relationship with the local farmers who are
always bringing new varieties for us to try out. This ensures
that our menu remains fresh and is constantly changing, not
just seasonally but sometimes weekly.”
As part of the drive to encourage families, children can eat for

HEALTH AND BEAUTY with Angela Bartlett

Q. As I have aged I seem to have quite a lot of nasal hair.

Is there anything that can be done to remove these hairs?
A. The hairs inside the nose serve an important purpose of
filtering out dust, dirt and germs; therefore removing all nasal
hair is not advisable. However, as you say, quite often as you
age the hairs around the edge of the nose can become thicker
and start to look unsightly. The easiest way to cope with these
hairs is with a nasal hair clipper.
The latest trend from New York is to wax unwanted nasal hairs,
as it lasts much longer than clipping the hairs. However, this
technique should not be attempted at home. Seek
the advice of a qualified therapist. I, and other
specially trained therapists, use a special technique
and wax type that effectively removes the hairs
but does not damage the delicate nature of the
skin inside the nose. This is very important, unless
you want to replace a nasal hair problem with a
different type of problem!

Cracking day out on the A49
FAMILIES will be asked to crack Cheshire’s longest Easter egg hunt this April.
Attractions and businesses along the A49 – stretching from Sandiway to Tarporley – have
joined together to provide a full day of fun on Friday 2nd April.
“There are not many roads where you would find yourself in a shire horse centre one
minute and at the next turn tasting tempting delights in a unique chocolate shop. However,
anyone who takes part in the egg hunt will
discover that those places and more are all
along the A49,” said Mark Huntley, manager at
Nunsmere Hall.
Anyone wanting to take part in the event
will be asked to make a donation to CRY
(Cardiac Risk in the Young). The charity was
chosen after an appeal for support from the
headteacher and children at Eaton Primary
School, in Eaton near Tarporley.
Those who turn up on the day at any of the
attractions and make a donation will get a
passport that they can have stamped at each
of the stops along the A49.
Once they have collected a stamp from the 11
destinations they will be entered into a draw
giving them the chance to win one of 11 prizes.
The prizes include a three-course meal for

TARPORLEY RACES
SUNDAY 18T H APRIL 2010

Under it’s new guise of the Tarporley Races and with an enthusiastic team of

supporters and followers, this promises to be a great day out for the whole family. NI
VERSA
There will be a wonderful lunch in a marquee with prime views of the races.

If you don’t fancy that then you can come along with your picnic, dogs and children
and just relax and have a bit of a flutter on the horses.

The story of Tarporley Races is steeped in local history with early races reported on
in the Chester Chronicle as far back as 1774. It was known then as Tarporley Races
which is why we have decided to go back to our roots.

The owners and jockeys over the years have been like a whose who of Cheshire aristocracy
including the Cholmondleys, the Egertons of Tatton Park, the Astons and the Leicester-Warrens of the
Tabley House, whose famous horse The Smoker now lends it’s name to a great pub on Bucklow Hill.

So with such a thoroughbred history, Tarporley Races promises to be around for at least another 50 years.

FIRST RACE 2.00PM

Tickets start from £20 per car, no booking necessary. Lunch tickets are available
from Mandy Shore on 07831 443 663 or Charlie Barlow on 07802 560 182.

Peckforton & Beeston WI

A TOTAL of 33 members attended the 3rd March meeting when an informative and
compassionate talk entitled ‘The Vital Work of Save the Family’
was given by Angella Rawsthorne. The charity ‘Save the
Family’ was founded 30 years ago, in Chester, by a retired head
teacher to keep homeless families together. She told us that
these families are given the skills to enable them to resettle in
the community so that 81% do not become homeless again. We
were all impressed by the obvious enthusiasm and dedication
of all of the volunteers involved in this very worthwhile cause.
Final arrangements were made for a a coffee morning on
April 14th at the home of Libby Warriner and a theatre trip on
April 22nd to see ‘The History Boys’. Details of a Lake District
walking holiday in May were given along with other facts
regarding county WI activities.
Our next meeting will be on April 7th when the talk by David
Shakeshaft is ‘Chester Uncovered’.
Why not come and join us at the Peckforton Village Rooms with meetings starting at
7.30 pm? For more information please telephone Judith Sherren on 01829 730071.
