Together We Can Do So Much

- Nerissa Simon
For most of us, the end-of-year holidays are a time of reflection
and gratitude for the lessons and accomplishments of the
previous 12 months. At One Hour For Life, we appreciate the
opportunity to express all of this in our annual newsletter, and to
use this newsletter to thank all of our supporters and volunteers
for contributing greatly to our goals. We would not have had such
a successful fifth year without you!
Our dedicated team continues to sustain OHLs mission and
vision, both locally and abroad. Our work with the Asian
Association here in Salt Lake City has been valuable for the
refugees and One Hour For Life alike, and 2016 promises to be
the most rewarding year yet with new projects under Johanna
Purdys guidance. OHL is also grateful for Johannas leadership in
Ethiopia in 2015, turning her experience from the year before into
managing 10 new medical students in all realms of their work for
another very successful year in that country. The projects these
students carried out will have a lasting impact on everyone

involved, and, as always, we will continue to keep the

relationships with our Ethiopian partners going strong until we
return again in May. The 2015 OHL Ethiopia Team under Johanna
included: Molly Fillion, Ashley Grimm, Megan Hubbard, Spencer
Hubbard, Dan Nguyen, Isaac Pak, Theresa Pham, Isabel Ramel,
Namratta Sehgal, and Kianna Shotorbani. Thank you all for your
excellent work!
Isabel Ramel not only carried out a very useful microbiologybased project in Ethiopia, but as a member of OHLs core-team of
volunteers, her contributions to OHL behind the scenes keep us
running locally. We look forward to Isabels ideas and fundraising
eorts in 2016, as well as hopefully leading the next group of
medical students in Ethiopia this summer.
Fundraising is a key function of any NGO, and Tony Pomicter
and Janet Kraft are OHLs leaders in this role. As Treasurer, Tony
balances every check and allocates every donation seamlessly. He
keeps us on track and under budget while maintaining
relationships with new and sustaining donors. Janet has initiated
several events, large and small, and finds short- and long-term
solutions to keep OHLs projects growing and thriving. She is
deeply passionate about our success and her positive energy and
innovative ideas are two of OHLs greatest attributes. Tony and
Janet have been serving on OHLs team from its earliest days.
Social media is also imperative for our Organizations success, and
we have Adhik Pokam to thank for our presence on Twitter,
Facebook, LinkedIn and Instagram. Adhik helps steer our
internal development, using his professional experience to foster
a robust business plan with attainable milestones. Adhik worked
with Johanna and Corey Cronin, a Westminster College
undergraduate who interned with OHL as part of his business
curriculum. Collaboration with Corey helped us choose strengths
to build on, obstacles to focus on, grants to apply for and
marketing strategies to adopt. It was a successful project with
mutual benefit, and we hope Corey chooses to volunteer with
OHL again in the future. We also thank Ed Minnett for his
continuous maintenance of our website. While based in England,
he jumps in to help at a moments notice.
Rounding out the OHL core team is Antigone Kithas. Antigone
doesnt have just one role because she is integral in all of them.

From the hands-on, tireless eorts during the Gala and the Extreme Aordability Global Health
Conference, to her leadership at the University Refugee and Immigrant Clinic, Antigone opens the doors
to many of OHLs local partnerships.
Kevin Gantz, an undergraduate at the University of Utah, joined OHL in the fall. We welcome Kevin as
he leads the OHL Undergraduate Chapter and works
closely with Johanna and the refugee and homeless
projects. We look forward to working with this growing
team of diverse students.
As OHLs 2015 President, I am grateful to the team for
making my job such a pleasure. It is my ambitious goal to
uphold our mission and vision statements in accordance
with our 501(c)(3) status, and to continuously strengthen
the team, our projects and our partnerships. Thanks to
Ira Kraft, OHL Founder, Ive had a strong foundation on
which to build. Ira continues to advise the direction of
OHLs endeavors, as well as orchestrate the future of the Organization.
Ira and the other third year medical students on our team continue to help OHL when theyre needed,
particularly with the School of Medicines Student Interest Groups, conferences, and work in Ethiopia.
Special thanks to Jackie Bohn, Ben Chou and Dawn Miller for continued work in these areas this year.
One Hour For Life has much to be grateful for as 2015 comes to a close, as well as plans for prosperity in
the year ahead thanks to our past, present and future members and donors. Thank you for your support!

2014 Gala
OHL held its most ambitious and
entertaining fundraiser on Dec 6,
2014 a grand gala at The Ethiopian
Restaurant in Salt Lake City. This
event reached 151 friends and family,
and it funded our 2015 projects in
Ethiopia. The food was delicious, the energy of the 11 Huaz Jamaica Dancers was contagious, and the
silent auction items were a hit there was truly something for everyone! OHL plans to bring an event of
this scale to the greater community again, so please stay tuned as we put the fun in fundraiser again in the

OHL at the University of Utah

Current and Future Endeavors of the Undergraduate Chapter
Kevin Gantz
To supplement the One Hour For Life organization as a whole, the undergraduate chapter works locally
in Salt Lake City with a similar goal of spreading preventative healthcare education. Thus far, the group
consists of seven undergraduates spanning a variety of major programs at the University of Utah. From
Bioengineering to Marketing, the diversity of this group sets the stage for wide array of ways to assist in
local programming.
Throughout the fall of 2015, the priorities of the undergraduate chapter have been to recruit
additional members and research possible opportunities to make a dierence in the Salt Lake area. So far,
we have established contact with the refugee population and are looking to assist the homeless population
within the next semester. Our work with the refugee population is in cooperation with the Asian
Association of Utah and assists with their refugee clinic they hold monthly. Both the medical students
and undergraduates of One Hour For Life work in collaboration with the clinic to provide further
preventative education to refugees upon diagnosis. Our current goal is the research and organization of an
educational document containing verified information regarding these diagnoses.
Over the next few months, the undergraduate chapter is striving to complete preparation and
implement our work into the refugee clinic. In addition, our goal is to also set up at least one more
consistent volunteering opportunity within Salt Lake City targeting underprivileged populations. To do
so, we are looking to recruit a few new undergraduate members with a drive for healthcare and a passion
for serving others. The overall goal of the undergraduate chapter is to create a sustainable volunteering
opportunities in the field of preventative healthcare education to serve as the local driving force of the
One Hour For Life organization. We look forward to what opportunities next year has to oer.

Current and Future Endeavors for the UUSOM Student Interest Group
- Johanna Purdy
The One Hour for Life Interest group at the University of Utah School of Medicine is currently in its
second year and thriving. At the beginning of this year, first year medical students wrote and
implemented a nutrition series for Somali refugees covering: basic nutrition, food safety, grocery shopping
and womens health. We are currently working on a collaboration with the Refugee Clinic and the OHL
Undergraduate Chapter to advise refugee patients over lifestyle changes that can be made to deal with
common issues like hypertension, diabetes, etc. This program is in its beginning stages and is expected to
be launched mid January. We are hoping to expand our collaboration with the Refugee Clinic and use our
volunteers to fulfill what ever needs they have in terms of preventative health education.

The OHL student interest group is also beginning its preparations for Ethiopia 2016. We hope to
take a team of 8-10 medical students to Addis Ababa, Ethiopia for the third summer in a row and
complete the research projects that are currently being run by our Ethiopian collaborators. We look
forward to another great year!

Something Bigger
- Antigone Kithas
Rested on the Wasatch mountains, the University of Utah Hospital overlooks the Salt Lake Valley, serving
as a beacon of the most innovative and quality health care in the state of Utah. The superb care that the
University of Utah oers extends far past where I can see, and reaches four other states. From the small
window in the library, I can see the whole valley and I am reminded that there is so much potential in the
world for change and growth, a potential that is embraced by One Hour for Life. This year, One Hour for
Life has greatly expanded the involvement of medical students from the University of Utah to help extend
the reach of the organization to local philanthropies. The medical students play an important role in
helping contribute to the mission of One Hour for Life by collaborating and figuring out new ways to
integrate One Hour for Life into the community.
Students at the University of Utah School of Medicine are busy preparing for their careers as future
physicians, and this year, part of that preparation includes participating in the many activities One Hour
for Life oers. Many medical students journeyed to Ethiopia this past summer to work with local
physicians and students, as well as conduct research projects. Others are involved with the local
community, working at a clinic for refugees.
To me, One Hour for Life not only oers an opportunity for medical students to participate in leading
activities within the community and across the globe, but being a part of this organization has opened up
a whole new world. This organization is run by the most selfless, motivated, and genuine people, and
getting to work with them regularly is a privilege. I have learned so much about collaboration, and how
necessary it is in order to make change. The OHL team works together for a common goal, and allows
every member to bring their talents to the table. This team brings out the best in its members, and sets a
genuine example of altruism that will inspire me, and many more students, in years to come.

The World Adult Kickball Association, WAKA, is a nation-wide business providing adults with social,
competitive, and fun opportunities in the forms of kickball and dodgeball leagues. WAKA and OHL have
been working together since the beginning of OHL and the players have always been incredibly generous
when it comes to funding OHL. We thank all those that participated in our silent auctions, bar games,
bake sales, and raes and thank the Woodshed (800 South 60 East, SLC) for hosting our events.
The Outdoor Retailer Show takes over downtown Salt Lake City twice a year, bringing together the best
brands in outdoor gear with buyers from retail outlets across the country. OHL has been invited to the
show since inception and continues to stock the prize pool with items obtained at the show. We thank the
administrators and participants for their generosity.
Thank you to Trader Joes in Salt Lake City for donating silent auction items (AKA delicious snacks).
We also thank Jonathan Dalton and the team at US Bank for their assistance in navigating the numerous
financial aspects of our trade.

Amazon Smile lends a hand

Social Media Spotlight

Social media is an online tool that helps people across the globe to communicate, share and
exchange career interests, ideas, pictures and videos. Social media depends on mobile and web
based platform that are highly interactive and user friendly.
Social media marketing is a form of marketing that involves the use of Internet as a medium to
communicate a consistent message to its target audience. This interactive form of marketing helps
organizations create and communicate its branding goals.
One Hour For Life, Inc. (OHL) uses social media as a tool to build social network among people
with similar interests and values. For example, OHL communicates to its target audience via
Facebook. OHL has its page active on Facebook since 2012. The organization has exhibited
presence in several events every year since 2012. For example, Racing with Passion 5k, WAKA
Kickball, March Madness and Outdoor Retailer Show.
OHL uses Facebook as a medium to enhance its brand image. OHLs brand image can be

3) Fan base:

For OHL Facebook page our 2016 goal is to reach a target audience of 300 per post and increase
in the number of OHL fans and engagement with posts. To achieve this goal we have following
strategies:
1) Promote by sponsoring OHL page throughout the U.S, Africa and Asia to the target
audience with similar interests.

2)

December 2015

Create a group and invite members with similar interests to join our group that would
increase the interaction with a large group of audience. For example, Give Hope.

3) Create and sponsor an Ad on Facebook and promote the ad during events.

OHL uses a widely used social media tool, Twitter. With the help of Twitter, OHL builds
meaningful connections with a relevant and engaged audience. OHL tweets on a weekly basis.
Our 2016 goal is to grow our audience base with the help of Ad campaigns. The Ad campaigns
would target the right audience, measure success with comprehensive analysis and drive results
that would grow the fan base.
Corey P. Cronin, in a student consultant program volunteered in Spring 2015 worked on a
marketing strategy for OHL. At the beginning of his 15-page document Corey made a list of six
grants worth pursuing for OHL.
1) Healthy Living Grant Program.
2) Community Food Projects.
3) Ethiopias Medical Education Consortium for Quality Medical Education and Retention.
4) mHealth Tools for underserved populations with chronic conditions to promote eective
Patient- Provider communication, Adherence to treatment and Self Management.
5) Commonwealth Fund Grant.
6) Izumi Foundation Grant.
Corey made a list of volunteer activities required at OHL. The student also created an OHL
Volunteer Application Form and made an analysis of existing marketing strategies based on
SWOT analysis. Corey in detail outlined strengths, weakness, opportunities and threats to the
organization and based on this analysis suggested a marketing strategy for OHL. The marketing
strategy was a six-step process written in detail, however, in this newsletter would be briefly
summarized.
1) Organizational Self- Assessment.
2) Goals and Strategies.
3) Determining OHLs Uniqueness.
4) Messaging.
5) Fundraising and defining the budget.
6) Evaluation.
