From the Chairman

GeoEng2000 is a landmark event in the world of Geotechnical

Engineeringone whose effects we hope will ripple through our
scientific, educational and research communities for some time to come.
This CD is our effort to make the many groundbreaking presentations of
GeoEng2000 readily accessible to you on an ongoing basis, as we
collectively tackle the challenges that lie ahead.
On behalf of the organising committee, our sponsors, and the many
authors represented within this body of work, I hope that this resource
will sit comfortably alongside the most useful of your professional tools.

Need some Help?

There are two types of navigational controls
which you will need to use to explore the
contents of this CD.
General Navigation
For the most part, you will use the controls
which are specific to this GeoEng2000 interface,
located within the earth coloured strip near the
top of each page. A few controls also appear in
the grey area below that (for example, the
Next button on this page), and wherever
you see the word go.
To access the papers themselves, choose a
theme that interests you from the Conference
Proceedings section, and then simply click the

name of the paper you would like to view in

order to open it for reading or printing.
Viewing Papers
Once you have opened a paper, you will need to
navigate using the controls which form part of
Acrobat itselfeither using menu commands,
keyboard shortcuts, or the buttons located at the
top of your screen.

The large arrows (the pair to the right) will

always take you back and forth along the path
you have travelledmuch like a web browser.

Viewing Multiple Papers at Once

Depending on how the preferences are set in
your copy of Acrobat, each paper you select to
view may open in a separate window. In this
case you can have more than one paper open at
a time, and you may also switch freely between
any open paper and this interface.
However, if your preferences are set to open
cross-document links in same window you will
need to travel back along the path you have
followed in order to open another paper.
Different versions of Acrobat handle preference
settings in different waysplease refer to the
Acrobat help menu for more information about
setting your preferences.

Thumbnails
Once you have opened one of the conference
papers, there are several ways you can move
around within the document. One simple
method to move forwards is to press the
return/enter key on your keyboard (to move
backwards, hold down the shift key while you
press return/enter).
Another option is to use the thumbnail views
we have provided for each paper, which you can
have Acrobat display to the left of your viewing
area. Double-clicking a thumbnail will take you
directly to that page. Controls for revealing and
hiding the thumbnails can be found on the
Acrobat button bar, or under the View menu.

Keyword Searches
If you have a specific interest, you may find it
convenient to search for a paper using Acrobats
built-in search engine. To use this feature you
must have a copy of Acrobat with Search installed
on your computer (for all operating systems
except Linux, this is the version of Acrobat
Reader which has been provided on the CD).

indexes (or click here). This will present you

with the Index Selection window, which should
contain an item named GeoEng2000 Search. If
this item doesnt appear in the list, click the
Add button, navigate to the GeoEng2000 CD,
and then find and double-click the index file,
which is named GEOSRCH.pdx, and is located
in the SEARCH folder on the CD.

Before Acrobat can search a collection of

documents like those on this CD, it needs to be
given access to a special file which contains an
index of all the words in all the documents, and
makes them available to the search engine.

Make sure that the box which appears next to

the GeoEng2000 Search item is checked, click
OKand you are ready to search.

To make this CDs index available to Acrobat,

choose the menu-item edit > search > select

You can switch the index on and off using the

check-box next to its name, or it may be
deleted from the list altogether using the
Remove button.

In Acrobat, search and find are two quite

different commands. While the find command is
limited to the frontmost document you have
open, search can be used to find any word in
any document on the CDopen or not (as long
as the CD is mounted, of course). Search will
also rank your results according to how
accurately they address your query, and gives
you access to a range of valuable tools, such as
a thesaurus, and case-sensitivity.
For detailed information about selecting indexes
and searching document collections, please refer
to Acrobat help.

It is important to note that, while the vast

majority of papers on this CD are searchable,
some have been prepared from scanned copies
and will not return results. This means that
although performing a search may be helpful, it
is not an exhaustive indication of the contents
of this CD.

Troubleshooting
If, for some reason, clicking on a paper title
fails to open the paper from within this
interface, you may take a note of the papers
code number and open it directly from the CD.
Folders containing the papers in each category
may be found in the directory named PAPERS
at the root level of the CD.

Compatibility
Versions of Adobe Acrobat vary somewhat
between platforms and release numbers. For this
reason it is possible that Acrobat may not look
or perform exactly as described in these notes
on your machine. Please always refer to the
Acrobat Reader help and release notes for the
most authoritative information specific to your
release of Adobe Acrobat.
