Survey Technician Co-op Summer Student Position

The Municipality of Kings is one of the fastest growing regions in Nova Scotia. It has a unique blend of urban

within a municipality widely recognized as being a leader in dealing with a wide variety of urban and rural planning issues.
Hours - 35 hour work week, Monday to Friday 8:30 4:30
Wage - $15.65 per hour
Work term is from May 2, 2016 to August 26, 2016. (Start date is flexible due to Field Camp)
Working in Trimble, Leica, CAD & ESRI environments, the Survey Technicians duties will primarily consist of providing
support towards the Capital Program for Engineering & Public Works and other corporate GIS initiatives. In support of this
work, the Survey Technician will be involved in the following activities:

Conduct GPS field research with technical and/or operations staff to gather all pertinent information related to
infrastructure concerning water distribution and wastewater collection (i.e. sample stations, water mains, pumping
stations, manholes, force mains, gravity mains, laterals, etc.) with respect to size, material, location, depth, etc., including
completion of post-processing on collected data where necessary.
Conduct topographical surveys and/or create as-built drawings of features as they are being constructed, such as
sidewalks, water mains and laterals, sewer mains and laterals and other features which comprise the Municipal
infrastructure.
Compile attributes of field-collected features with information available from various sources including as-built drawings,
file records, surveys, and employee knowledge.
Create maps and/or technical drawings in response to staff requests.

The successful applicant will join a team of dynamic professionals reporting directly to the Manager of Information
Technology.
Must have experience in execution of topographic surveys and a working knowledge of ArcGIS 9.0. Must hold a valid Nova
Scotia Drivers License, Class 5 or higher. The successful candidate will possess good organizational and interpersonal skills.
Knowledge of the following GPS systems are an asset but not mandatory: Leica TPS1100 system, Leica GS50 with DataPro
and Trimble GeoXT autonomous unit with ESRI ArcPAD, Trimble GPScorrect and Trimble TerraSync software.
Education Level - Successful completion of the one year Survey Technician Program, NSCC, Lawrencetown, eligible for the
co-op program, and enrolled in the Geomatics Engineering Technology Program.
Work Term Outcomes
The Municipality of the County of Kings expects willing participation in the on-going collection of infrastructure data during
this annual project where a significant portion of the system(s) are surveyed and added to our mapping database. By the
end of the work term the student will have a working knowledge of Municipal data management practices, a variety of data
acquisition methods, familiarity with water and wastewater treatment operations and working experience with digital and
hardcopy map creation.
